Artradol: instructions for use and contraindications

Nourishment for cartilage and a cure for pain

Artradol promotes the regeneration of cartilage in the joint.
With a lack of physical activity or vice versa, abnormal loads, the presence of excess kilograms, injuries, and aging of the body, the destruction of cartilage tissue prevails over its renewal. The structural “units” of cartilage lose their components – chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate, and its cells – chondrocytes – lose their ability to fully synthesize proteoglycans. The latter form a kind of layer that provides cartilage tissue with the ability to resist compression.

Cartilaginous structures become more fibrous; Water accumulates in them, but “loose” tissues do not retain it. Losing liquid “lubricant,” the cartilage suffers from excess pressure and becomes deformed.

The drug Artradol contains sodium chondroitin sulfate, a polysaccharide that promotes cartilage regeneration and, together with collagen proteins, fills its intercellular space. When chondrocytes break down, enzymes are released that destroy connective tissue. Chondroitin sulfate inhibits the action of these enzymes. Under its influence, the release of pain factors and obligatory “participants” of inflammation - prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4 - is reduced. Chondroitin sulfate also improves the exchange of phosphorus and calcium in cartilage and underlying bone; promotes stimulation of “mature” joint fluid.

Thus, as a medicine, Artradol solves problems in several areas:

  • Replenishes the lack of “source material” for the “construction” of cartilage tissue and deactivates enzymes that destroy it;
  • Increases strength and normalizes mineral metabolism in connective and bone tissues;
  • Improves the quality of joint fluid;
  • When used systematically, it improves the structure of cartilage tissue, which leads to a decrease in the intensity of pain in the joint and brings the amplitude of its mobility closer to physiological.

In the future, especially in non-advanced conditions, regular courses of Artradol may be followed by a complete refusal of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs for the following “joint” ailments:

  • arthrosis of the knee and other large joints;
  • osteoarthritis of small joints;
  • osteochondrosis and spondyloarthrosis;
  • spinal pain accompanying destructive processes in the intervertebral discs.

Due to its potential analgesic effect, the drug does not need to be diluted with novocaine.

Pharmacokinetics

After Artradol is diluted and administered, it begins to enter the organic fluids of the body within a few minutes.

After 15-20 minutes it combines with the synovial fluid, and after 30-35 minutes it is found in the blood.

After an hour, the maximum concentration of the treatment substance is reached. Over 48 hours, the medicine gradually dissolves and the concentration decreases.

Chondroitin accumulates in cartilage tissue; by 2 days after the injection, its maximum concentration is observed in this place.

Within 24 hours it is excreted by the body through the kidneys. When the ointment is applied externally, systemic absorption is not observed.

How to use the medicine

The instructions for use of the drug attached to Artradol, located in the packaging of each pharmaceutical product, describe in detail the dosage and indications for use.

IMPORTANT!!! Treatment with this drug is prescribed only by a qualified specialist who is familiar with the characteristics of his patient’s pathology. He describes in detail the method of using the medicine, its dosage and duration of therapy. But carefully studying the instructions for use is mandatory in any case.

If the doctor has prescribed intramuscular injections, therapy begins with the minimum dosage. It is one milliliter, injections should be given every other day. If more intensive treatment is necessary and provided that the patient tolerates the administered drug well, the dosage is increased. The appearance of undesirable reactions of the body should be monitored for at least a week, that is, the dose change should occur no earlier than after three injections and no more than twice.

It is necessary to dilute the powder for injection with a special liquid immediately before the procedure in the amount required for one injection. Therapy is carried out in courses (25-35 procedures), the duration of the break and the need for re-treatment is determined by the treating specialist.

Artradol ointment is available in 30 ml glass containers. A small amount of the product (no more than one gram) is applied to the area of the body where the affected joint is located and massaged for several minutes to ensure faster and deeper absorption of the product. This treatment is carried out 2-3 times a day, more often if necessary. If any unpleasant reactions of the body occur (itching, burning, redness, skin rashes), indicating the development of an allergic reaction, stop therapy and consult a doctor. If necessary, the specialist will reduce the dose or recommend an analogue that eliminates the allergic component.

To relieve allergy symptoms, it is recommended to take antihistamines.

Release form and composition

  • lyophilisate for preparing a solution for intramuscular (IM) administration: a porous mass compacted into a tablet, white with a yellow tint or white (ampoules with a capacity of 2 ml: 5 pcs. in a plastic tray, 2 pallets in a cardboard box; 10 pcs. per cardboard holder, 1 holder in a cardboard pack);
  • ointment for external use 5%: light yellow mass with a specific odor (30 g in glass jars, 1 jar in a cardboard pack).

The active ingredient of the lyophilisate is sodium chondroitin sulfate (chondroitin sulfate), its content in 1 ampoule is 100 mg (based on 100% dry matter).

Composition per 1 g ointment:

  • active ingredient: chondroitin sulfate sodium (in terms of dry matter) – 0.05 g;
  • auxiliary components: dimethyl sulfoxide, anhydrous lanolin, medical petroleum jelly, purified water.

Basic description of the drug

Artradol is a drug whose main active ingredient is chondroitin. This is an analogue of the natural components that make up the cartilage itself, which allows the medicine to have the following functions:

  • restore and normalize metabolic processes in joints;
  • prevent further destruction of connections;
  • promote the regeneration of cartilage tissue cells.

IMPORTANT!!! Another important property of the drug is the ability to suppress the development of bacterial microflora in the joint capsule, which makes it possible to improve the quality of synovial fluid, that is, the “lubricating” substance of the joint.

The effect of the drug on the patient’s body does not end there: this chondroprotector reduces, and in some cases completely eliminates, inflammatory processes in joint tissues and has a positive effect on blood clotting, which helps improve the functioning of the internal organs of the entire human body.

The drug Artradol has two forms of release: ointment and ampoules with a special powder, from which a solution for intramuscular injection is prepared immediately before use. The lyophilisate (powder) must be diluted in certain proportions with water for injection or saline. The main composition of both forms is the same - sodium chondroitin sulfate, known for its restorative abilities in the soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system. The total volume of active substance in the medicine for external use is 5%. The ointment is used to treat degenerative changes in joints throughout the body: upper and lower extremities, spine, small joints.

IMPORTANT!!! For severe illnesses, doctors recommend the combined use of external and internal drugs, but the dosage and duration of the medication course in this case are selected individually.

Patients' opinions

After the course, the pain in my knees decreased significantly, I don’t even remember about them. I've had 25 injections and I hope I don't need any more.

Khilova T., pensioner, orthopedic patient for 4 years

I was prescribed a course of medication after suffering an injury. My hip joint was damaged. They have already tried to use other drugs, but there was no effect.

Now, after I had completed more than half of the course, I began to feel relief. It’s too early to take a control photo, but I hope that it will show an improvement in the condition of my joint

Veniamin, 29 years old, athlete

Advice from patients

Many patients who have undergone a course of therapy with Artradol note a significant improvement in the motor functions of the joints and the absence of side effects.

This is not the first time I have been treated with the drug; I am using it for the third course.

Although you have to endure a long course of injections, the effect of it is persistently preserved

I advise patients to especially pay attention to their condition during the cold season, and then use medicine to maintain the functions of the diseased joint and to reduce pain.

Patient of the orthopedic clinic Garipova N

Pros and cons based on reviews and practical experience

The drug causes virtually no side effects; after its use, positive dynamics are observed in all cases.

For persons with a tendency to bleeding and with a diagnosis of thrombophlebitis, the drug is not prescribed

For diabetic patients, the course is carried out with caution.

Overdose and special instructions

In case of an overdose of the drug, changes in blood parameters may occur and the coagulation process may be disrupted.

Hemorrhagic changes may occur at the injection site, as well as local allergic reactions in the form of itching, redness of the skin, and local swelling may begin.

special instructions

Special instructions include monitoring blood clotting readings; the use of other drugs is recommended if gastric ulcers or colitis are suspected.

It is recommended to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages immediately after the injection.

If renal function is impaired, injections of the drug should be started with caution. If liver function is impaired, its condition should be monitored using blood tests and liver tests

Children's age is a limitation in taking the drug.

During pregnancy or lactation, the drug is used with caution, if possible replacing it with more gentle types of treatment.

Interaction with other drugs

When using Artradol injections simultaneously with fibrinolytics, various kinds of antiplatelet agents, anticoagulants, blood clotting indicators should be monitored, since the drugs enhance their effect.

pharmachologic effect

The action of the drug causes active resistance to the development of inflammatory processes in the area where the cartilaginous tissues of the joints are located.

Chondroitin sulfate stimulates the production of proteoglycans and promotes the regeneration of cartilage tissue of the subchondral bone.

The active substance is a high-molecular mucopolysaccharide that affects the metabolic processes of calcium and phosphorus in the body, serves as a protector of calcium in the bone, and inhibits the activity of enzymes that decompose cartilage tissue.

Since the drug blocks the release of mediators of the pathological process into the synovial fluid, which occurs through the macrophages of the synovial membrane and through synoviocytes, the patient’s pain is reduced.

This is the analgesic effect of the drug. The drug slows down the production of prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4 and acts as a chondroprotective anti-inflammatory drug.

Pharmacological features of the product

The pharmacological action of the drug is wide and varied. Although its main purpose is the regeneration of cartilage tissue, it is carried out by influencing many metabolic processes of the body, which leads to the normalization of the functioning of not only the musculoskeletal system.

  1. The main reason for the development of inflammation to which articular cartilage is exposed is bacterial microflora. Chondroitin is able to inhibit its growth, which leads to a decrease in these processes.
  2. Special high-molecular compounds - proteoglycans, which are the main cell matrix, help restore tissue damaged by inflammation. It is their enhanced synthesis that stimulates the main active ingredient of the drug. By influencing metabolic processes, chondroitin restores the exchange of phosphorus and calcium in the patient’s body, additionally acting as a “substitute” for these building substances. It is also able to suppress an enzyme that promotes the breakdown of cartilage cells, which helps them recover on their own.
  3. By blocking the derivative components of destructive processes, the patient's pain is reduced, which facilitates the overall health of the person.

All these effects allow Artradol to belong to the class of analgesic, anti-inflammatory and cartilage tissue regenerating drugs.

Artradol injections instantly penetrate the bloodstream; when applied externally, it takes about 20 minutes for the active substance to penetrate the blood. But in both cases, the maximum concentration of the active component occurs an hour after the drug is administered to the patient. Complete elimination of the components of the drug occurs two days after the last treatment procedure, along with metabolic products in the form of urine. The accumulation of the active component in large quantities by internal organs does not occur.

IMPORTANT!!! The structure of chondroitin is similar to heparin, a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots in the circulatory system. This allows Artradol to be included in the group of drugs that improve the functioning of not only the musculoskeletal system, but also the cardiovascular system.

Indications and contraindications

Artradol is used for diseases of the joints and spinal column, in which destruction of cartilage tissue is observed. Chondroprotectors, which this drug belongs to, have a minimum of contraindications. However, in any case, the medicine should be taken only on the recommendation of a doctor.

Contraindications:

Recently (about two months already) in

my blog

With enviable regularity, spam reviews and comments appear that are not directly related to the topic of the articles, but stubbornly glorify a drug called Artradol. I am deleting these comments because they are very intrusive, but on this page I would like to hear real reviews about this new drug. It's possible that he isn't actually bad. Its distributors just go a little overboard with spam. These are the reviews about Artradol. I do not rule out that some of them may be real:

* I read so many good reviews about artradol, I heard about it by chance on the bus, so I think I should get treatment.

* And who injected artradol for such good results in how many courses? The doctor prescribed it for me too, and now I’m collecting information about it.

* I don’t have money for a sanatorium, while I recover as best I can at the dacha in the summer season. I try to receive comprehensive treatment - vitamins, physiotherapy, massage, and every six months I give artradol injections to restore cartilage tissue. I’m coping with arthrosis somehow, I’m even planting beds!

* It doesn’t really help me, for some reason my temperature rises. I switched to artradol. This is a completely different matter, there are no side effects. And most importantly, my osteochondrosis has become much smaller!

* Yeah. Previously, I didn’t think about how important joints are until I developed arthrosis of the knee joint. It’s good that a smart doctor was caught and immediately prescribed effective treatment to restore the cartilaginous membranes of the joint. I have already completed 2 courses of treatment, I hope for a full recovery.

* Pulsed currents help me well for aching joints. Artradol was also prescribed, as there are changes in the cartilage tissue. A good drug, my neighbor has been on these injections for a year now, he literally recovered his knee after an injury. A little expensive for me, but I’ll have to buy it, I don’t want to get arthrosis as a result.

What do they tell us on the official website of the drug?

This drug helps improve phosphorus-calcium metabolism in the cartilage tissue of joints and significantly accelerates the recovery process. At the same time, it inhibits the processes of degeneration of cartilage and connective tissue. Reduces pain, thereby increasing the mobility of affected joints.

The drug has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, helps to significantly reduce the release of inflammatory mediators and pain factors into the synovial fluid through synoviocytes and macrophages of the synovial membrane, and suppresses the secretion of leukotriene B4 and prostaglandin E2.

Intramuscular injections of Artradol and its external use in the form of a regular ointment are indicated during the treatment of degenerative diseases of all joints, including the spine: primary arthrosis, osteoarthrosis with damage to large joints, intervertebral osteochondrosis.

Treatment of osteoarthritis with Artradol

It is carried out with painkillers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and is supplemented with drugs with chondroprotectors. One of these drugs, the most effective today, is Artradol.

First of all, it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this case, the medicine is easily absorbed (Ointment for external use 5%) and when administered intramuscularly accumulates in cartilage tissues.

In combination with Artradol, a course of physiotherapeutic procedures is usually carried out in parallel. As prescribed by the doctor.

Contraindications

Sensitivity to the components of the drug, young age

It should be used with some caution if you are prone to bleeding and with thrombophlebitis. And, of course, during pregnancy

Reviews about the drug

Patient reviews

Most of those who have used Artradol for treatment claim that relief occurs after 4-5 intramuscular injections . The pain that accompanies diseases of the musculoskeletal system is reduced, and joint mobility is improved.

Those who have used the drug must continue to carry out repeated courses of treatment and report a general improvement in their well-being after treatment with this medication.

Reviews from experts

Experts note in their practice the frequent use of Artradol and its high effectiveness in diseases of the joints and spinal column . They indicate the property of this medication to reduce swelling, which is often accompanied by joint diseases, as well as intervertebral osteochondrosis.

Experts note that they often use Artradol in their practice to treat patients
Experts recommend using this medication strictly in the required dosages. This treatment is the most effective. Without the need to change the dosage, it makes no sense - this will not lead to an improvement in the therapeutic effect.

"Artradol" acts much faster and more effectively in relation to tablet drugs. Its effect begins within 15 minutes after the injection is administered intramuscularly. And the effect of the tablets begins only as the components of Artradol accumulate in the tissues of the body - from several days to several weeks.

The injections are not painful , which also plays a positive role in treatment. Since patients can more easily tolerate long courses of intramuscular injections that cannot be interrupted.

Experts also note that this medication is generally well tolerated by patients . The level of allergic reactions to it is minimal. Only occasionally can skin irritation be observed at the injection site.

If anyone has experience in treatment with the drug Artradol, be sure to leave your feedback. Perhaps your comment will greatly help some of our website visitors.

Artadol or analogues, which is cheaper and more effective

Being a simple stimulator of tissue repair, Artradol has many analogues. Among them:

  • Chondrogard. The active substance and its dosage are the same as in the drug Artradol. What is better – Artradol or Chondrogard? Their medicinal properties, procedure for use, contraindications and even bioavailability are absolutely identical. But the list of analogue indications is a little wider. In addition to pathologies of connective and cartilaginous tissues, Chondrogard is used to complement the treatment of osteoporosis and bone fractures;
  • . Its composition is much more complex. If we compare Artradol and Alflutop, which is better? Artradol contains a substance that is similar in structure to cartilage tissue and can slow down the inflammatory process. Alflutop, in addition to dry chondroitin sulfate, extracted from small sea fish, includes mineral salts, amino acids and sugars. It not only nourishes the cartilage, but slows down the progression of the disease and is able to completely stop inflammation. In addition to the injection solution, Alflutop is also produced in the form of a gel, the use of which is permitted for expectant and nursing mothers;
  • Chondrolone. Another “protector” of cartilage tissue, whose main task is its restoration and reduction of pain in the joint. The active substance and procedure for use are the same as Artradol.

Having the same active ingredient and being drugs of the same group, Artradol, Chondrogard and Chondrolone do not differ much in price. Therefore, when coordinating your choice with the treating doctor, you should choose as a guide not the cost of the medicine, but the degree of its purification and information about the manufacturer and the raw materials from which it is made. The possibility of using the medicine by allergy sufferers depends on this.

So, when choosing Chondroguard or Arthrodol, people with a likelihood of allergic reactions should take into account that the former, in addition to chondroitin, contains benzyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide and sodium metabisulfate.

When comparing which is better - Chondrolone or Artradol, it should be taken into account that the active substance in the first is obtained from cattle cartilage.

Due to significant differences in composition, Artradol and Alflutop are not always interchangeable. Artradol, as evidenced by reviews of patients using this drug, is more effective in treating degenerative phenomena in the intervertebral discs.

Alflutop is more effective against pathologies of the knee and other joints. In addition, it is not known how much chondroitin sulfate is in Alflutop.

Artradol is a drug produced in Russia by Armavir Biofactory and Scientific and Production Center Biogen. All analogues described are also manufactured in Russia. The exception is Alflutop, produced in Romania.

Preparations with this active ingredient

Methods of use and dosage of Artradol

Artradol is intended for intramuscular injection.

The drug is prescribed in a daily dosage of 100 mg. Frequency of application – 1 time in 2 days.

Before use, the contents of the ampoule must be dissolved in 1 ml of water for injection.

If the medication is well tolerated, its dosage is increased to 200 mg after the 3rd injection.

The course of therapy consists of 25-35 injections. If necessary, a second course of treatment is prescribed, but not earlier than 6 months after the previous one, and their duration is set by the attending physician and depends on the patient’s condition and the complexity of the disease.

Compatibility with alcohol and other drugs

Although the combination of Artradol with alcohol-containing drinks does not pose a threat to life, they should be abandoned in order to reduce the risk of alcohol intoxication. The simultaneous intake of alcohol and a chondroprotector into the body can cause abdominal pain, constipation or intestinal upset, but this combination is most unfavorable for the condition of the kidneys and liver.

The injection of the drug should be “diluted” in time with the intake of other medicines based on ethyl alcohol, maintaining an hour interval between them.

Caution should also be exercised when combining Artradol with heparin. The structure of these drugs is similar

On the one hand, their combined use prevents thrombus formation in the subchondral and synovial beds, and on the other hand, it increases the likelihood of bleeding. In view of the latter, there are relative contraindications to treatment with the drug in persons with a tendency to bleeding. The principle of action of the drug is similar to other indirect anticoagulants. Artradol also enhances the effect of fibrinolytics.

There are also physiotherapeutic methods for treating joint diseases.

Independent medical opinion

You can read doctors' reviews about the drug Artradol below.

I prescribed Artradol to patient K. Some time ago, the patient suffered a knee injury and suffered from pain; he practically could not, for example, walk up the stairs. A course of injections was given, now the patient is on the mend, about three months have passed since the start of therapy. I see positive dynamics both in the pictures and in the condition of the patient’s knee.

Traumatologist, Desnitsky G.V.

By prescribing this drug intramuscularly, I, first of all, pursue the goal of slowing down the developed process of inflammation, preventing the final disintegration of tissues and affected areas.

When I see that the patient tolerates the medicine well, I increase the dose. The therapeutic effect of this drug is not immediately noticeable, but persists several months after the start of the course.”

Orthopedic doctor, head of the private clinic Pyshkova O. E.

I work as a radiologist in an orthopedic center. Various patients come to us, many undergo long courses of therapy, while others require surgical intervention. So, both after undergoing surgery and when it is possible to do without surgery, the drug works wonders.

I can see from the images how progressive changes in tissue condition occur both during post-traumatic therapy and with complex diagnoses associated with the age-related characteristics of patients.

Degenerative processes in cartilage tissues weaken, islands of a new strong cellular system appear, Artradol does its job. I am satisfied with this drug"

Radiologist, Karasev V.V.
