What is hematogen made of?
- Hematogen is made from defibrinated cattle blood purified from microorganisms.
- In modern production, purified hemoglobin is used instead of dry blood to reduce allergic reactions.
- To add flavor, hematogen is enriched with other food products: molasses, sugar, chocolate, sesame seeds, honey, nuts, condensed milk, coconut flakes, candied fruits, etc.
Many people do not believe that hematogen is made from blood, because they do not find this component in the composition. And the blood is hidden in a component called food albumin, i.e. blood protein.
Hematogen: medicine or treat?
Brownish slabs of hematogen, slightly reminiscent of chocolate, have been known to domestic consumers for several years or even decades. Many parents and grandparents generously indulged in this delicacy, and even today this sweet remains very popular. The main argument of any adult who purchases a small bar for his child sounds something like this: “Bought at a pharmacy, therefore, it is not only safe, but also healthy.” Meanwhile, approximately half of the hematogen varieties are officially registered as medicines, with which, as we know, one should not joke. The rest of the brown bars are considered a dietary supplement, that is, a dietary supplement, which experts recommend using with extreme caution in children.
It is interesting to know that the first drug, released under the name “Hematogen,” was not a solid slab at all, but a liquid mixture based on bovine blood. It appeared in Switzerland in 1890. The idea of creating the mixture belonged to the doctor Adolf Friedrich Hommel, who considered his invention a remedy for anemia, stomach ulcers, malaria, diabetes, rickets and other diseases. The described product was also sold in Russia from the beginning of the twentieth century, and the hematogen we are used to in slabs began to be produced only after 1917.
Hematogen is prepared from dry defibrinated blood of cattle. Many people know about this, but for some this news is so shocking that they completely refuse to consume the “bloody” sweetness. However, this is true: even the name “hematogen” itself is translated from Greek as “giving birth to blood” (due to the fact that the drug contains iron and stimulates the formation of red blood cells - erythrocytes). Black food albumin, which is part of brown “taffy”, is dried stabilized blood or red blood cells of cattle. Animal blood is processed in a special way to eliminate the possibility of infection. Despite this, erythrocyte membranes retain a large number of allergens, and due to the use of polyphosphates during the processing of biological material (often in concentrations exceeding the norm), the finished product binds and removes calcium from the body. Of course, blood is not the only component of hematogen. It is obtained by mixing sugar syrup, condensed milk and molasses when heated to 125 ° C until a thick mass is obtained, followed by adding black food albumin to it. Some varieties also contain honey, ascorbic acid and other substances that improve their taste.
So, hematogen is considered a drug for correcting metabolic processes . It should be noted that the strength of its pharmacological effect is not nearly as great as that of “real” tablets, but is not inferior to the effect of other vitamin-like drugs. The aromatic tile is a source of complete protein, fats, carbohydrates and minerals in proportions similar to the composition of human blood. Of course, the main function of “chocolate” is to stimulate hematopoiesis, promote the absorption of iron in the intestines, increase the hemoglobin content in the blood and increase the amount of ferritin in the plasma. In this regard, the following indications for the use of hematogen :
- Poor nutrition
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Low blood hemoglobin and frequent bleeding
- Chronic peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum
- Severe infectious diseases (flu and others)
- Various visual impairments (as part of complex treatment)
- Noticeable growth retardation
- Inelasticity and dryness of the skin, problems with hair and nail growth.
The most interesting thing is that, like any other medicine, Hematogen has contraindications, which not everyone knows about. In addition to banal hypersensitivity and allergic reactions, we are talking, for example, about anemia not associated with iron deficiency. Due to the presence of easily digestible carbohydrates in the bar, it should not be offered to people with diabetes and obesity. The same carbohydrates contribute to the fermentation process in the intestines, which can cause nausea and diarrhea. Thrombophlebitis and pregnancy are also contraindications. The fact is that the viscous “iris” promotes blood thickening, which can thrombose the blood vessels in the placenta of the expectant mother. Breastfeeding women should also think about whether they should eat sweet bars (even if the baby has a low hemoglobin level), since as a result of eating them, the taste of the milk changes, which is why the baby refuses to breastfeed.
It is important:
- To date, some varieties of hematogen are registered as a medicinal product in the group “Drugs affecting hematopoiesis and blood” or “Iron preparations”. These are, for example: Hematogen L, Hematogen New, Hematogen S, Hematogen S Vita, Hematogen with pine nuts.
- Some varieties of hematogen are registered as a biologically active food additive in the group “Dietary supplements with general strengthening action.” Such sweets can be bought not only at the pharmacy, but also in the supermarket. These are, for example: Super Hematogen, Hematogen Honey, Hematogen Appetizing, Hematogen Children's Lux.
- In terms of their composition, active ingredients and pharmacological action, hematogen-medicine and hematogen-dietary supplement are practically the same. Only their flavorings change (honey, nuts, jam, condensed milk, etc.). In addition, the composition of the medicine must include “food grade black albumin”.
- On the one hand, it is more profitable to sell hematogen medicine, since VAT on medical products in Russia is only 10%, while on dietary supplements it is 18%. On the other hand, the hematogen-biological supplement can be sold faster, since it is allowed to be sold both in pharmacies and in ordinary stores, and there is no longer a need to check the quality of each batch of goods, as in the case of medicine.
So, now let’s answer the main question: is it possible to give hematogen to children uncontrollably? In general, the aromatic bar is a completely safe and healthy treat, but given its pharmaceutical properties, moderation should be observed. Hematogen cannot replace sweets and chocolate, becoming a sweet “additive to tea”, nor can it be used as a means of frequent and “healthy” snacking during the day. Getting rid of an annoying little child at the pharmacy by buying him a “chocolate” is also not the best option. And finally, you should always remember about contraindications. Hematogen can be used daily (in this case, the course of “treatment” is 2-3 weeks) or systematically - during emotional or physical stress.
Hematogen dosage for children:
- from 4 to 6 years : up to 25 grams per day (recommended: three times a day in the amount of 5-8 grams)
- from 7 to 12 years : up to 35 grams per day (recommended: twice a day, 10-15 grams)
- children over 12 years old and adults : up to 50 grams per day (recommended: three times a day, 10-15 grams)
Composition of hematogen
Hematogen contains nutrients, microelements and macroelements that have a beneficial effect on the process of hematopoiesis and on health in general:
| Hematogen contains the following sugars: glucose, sucrose, maltose and dextrin. |
| Hematogen contains essential and replaceable AKs and partially covers the daily need for them. |
| Animal fats and fat-soluble vitamins. |
| Bivalent iron is easily absorbed and absorbed in the intestines, corrects iron deficiency conditions. |
| Represented by vitamin A and C. |
| In addition to iron, hematogen contains potassium, sodium, chlorine, and calcium. |
| They are responsible for the taste and nutritional value of hematogen (sugar, condensed milk, etc.). |
Doctors' opinion
Experts can explain why children need hematogen. The tasty bar is rich in fats, carbohydrates, proteins and other components necessary for the growth and development of children. It is worth noting that the tiles offered by modern industry do not always meet the requirements. Sometimes the iron content in them is too low to cope with the symptoms of anemia. Doctors emphasize that the bar sold in the store is not a medicine. This is just a tasty and healthy addition to your baby’s diet. But if a child is diagnosed with anemia, then it is unacceptable to use hematogen as the only source of treatment.
The benefits of hematogen
Hematogen is prescribed both for transient conditions (preceding the disease) and for existing diseases. Most often recommended for children to normalize the process of hematopoiesis, and also due to its good nutritional value.
Indications for Hematogen:
- Iron deficiency anemia, which occurs against the background of a decrease in blood hemoglobin.
- General exhaustion of the body. Occurs due to poor nutrition, prolonged mental or physical stress, stress, exposure to an unfavorable environmental environment (see symptoms and treatment of low hemoglobin in the blood)
- Ulcerative pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract, occurring with obvious or hidden bleeding.
- Visual impairment due to vitamin A deficiency.
- Hypovitaminosis.
- Conditions after illnesses.
- Children's lag in height and weight (see malnutrition in children).
Harm of hematogen
Excessive addiction to hematogen and consumption of it in unlimited quantities, often replacing food with it, can lead to excess iron in the body. This leads to the production of free radicals that can damage cell walls and completely destroy them.
- Excess iron promotes the deposition of cholesterol in blood vessels, i.e. is a provoking factor in the development of atherosclerosis.
- Excessive absorption of hematogen leads to diarrhea, nausea and dizziness, since fermentation processes begin in the intestines with excessive intake of dietary supplements.
Hematogen during pregnancy
During pregnancy, the need for iron increases significantly, which is necessary both for the full development of the placenta and fetus, and for the mother. Moreover, iron should come from outside, and not be used from the ferritin depot (see iron supplements for anemia). Often, a woman loses a large amount of iron during childbirth due to blood loss, as well as during lactation.
During pregnancy, the volume of freely circulating blood increases by almost half, which in itself leads to an increase in the need for iron. In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy, iron consumption should be greatest . During these periods, iron reserves decrease, and a number of factors that contribute to an increase in the need for iron lead to the development of dangerous iron deficiency anemia (see pregnancy with low hemoglobin).
Prevention of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women is the daily intake of about 27 mg of digestible iron into the body. Therefore, hematogen is able to prevent iron deficiency and increase the reserves of the microelement in the body of a pregnant woman. However, hematogen cannot and should not act as the main source of iron - this function is performed by a complete diet, including fish, meat, eggs, liver, green vegetables and cereals.
You should definitely not abuse Hematogen during pregnancy: since the bar is made on the basis of natural blood, deviations in the development of the fetus are possible. Blood thickening while taking hematogen is a risk of developing thrombophlebitis.

How to use hematogen
Hematogen is available in the form of tiles, bars or chewable strips. The bars are available in different dosages, 20, 30 and 50 g, divided into plates or cubes.
Dosage for children | Dosage for adults | Dosage for pregnant women |
| 1-3 tablets or 5-15 grams twice or thrice a day | Up to 50 grams per day (no more) |
- The duration of treatment for all categories of persons is 14-21 days .
- Take hematogen between meals, which ensures better absorption.
- You can drink it with water, but you should not simultaneously consume dairy products, which impair the absorption of nutrients.
While taking Hematogen, you should not take multivitamin complexes at the same time. If it is necessary to take other drugs simultaneously, you should discuss with your doctor the possibility of using hematogen.
Useful tips for parents
At what age can a child be given hematogen is of interest to many caring parents. Doctors advise offering the bar during recovery from illness or other symptoms described above, only from 3 years of age. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the following nuances:
- The total duration of use of the tiles should not exceed three weeks.
- For better absorption of sweets, hematogen plates are offered after the main meal.
- You can take the nutritional supplement with water; you can also drink fruit juice. However, combining it with dairy products is unacceptable. As a result, iron absorption is significantly impaired.
- It is not recommended to use other vitamin complexes during hematogen therapy.
From the above we can conclude that a bar with a characteristic taste is not just a healthy treat, but a food supplement with its own indications and contraindications. If in any doubt, it is better to consult a pediatrician.
Contraindications for use of the drug
- Diabetes. Hematogen contains easily digestible carbohydrates that increase blood sugar

Hematogen became a real salvation for me during pregnancy. In the second trimester, I suffered greatly from iron deficiency and constantly felt drowsy and weak. It’s good that my mother reminded me in time about such a simple and cheap product as hematogen. I started taking one package a day and instantly felt the beneficial properties, and tests quickly showed that iron had returned to normal.

I have been using Hematogen in courses of 1-2 months with short breaks for several years now - since I entered college. The workload is heavy, there is never enough time, the food also leaves much to be desired - I am a student and cannot afford expensive products. Hematogen helps maintain strength and performance, and it’s very nice that all this benefit costs a penny.
Talasova Anastasia Igorevna, 35 years old, Ryazan
I consider Hematogen one of the most useful dietary supplements; I remember well how it helped me both during my studies and during pregnancy. A very inexpensive delicacy, but at the same time tasty, and the beneficial properties are simply enormous. Now I’m buying hematogen for my child - my son has started first grade, and it’s difficult to get used to the new loads. Now I can be sure that my son will not develop anemia, and his body will develop correctly.
How to choose a hematogen
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous manufacturers, under the popular trade name Hematogen, produce a product that has nothing to do with it.
- In the composition of the hematogen, the first component should be food albumin (food black albumin, dried bovine blood).
- In percentage terms, the optimal amount of albumin is 4-5% of the total mass.
Various flavoring additives do not give hematogen any particular benefit, but they make it possible to use it for children who perceive the medicine as sweetness.
conclusions
It is not for nothing that many parents are interested in the age at which they can give their child hematogen. From the age of three, you can occasionally offer your baby a treat. Due to its nutritional value and the presence of many useful components, the product helps improve the child’s blood condition. Hematogen should not be bought just like that. Its use must be justified by a doctor.
It is known that sweet tiles help stimulate hematopoiesis. The iron included in the composition is quickly absorbed and helps increase ferritin and hemoglobin.
However, moms and dads should remember that the bar is beneficial only if the recommended dosage is observed, which the doctor can advise. Hematogen is not used as treatment. If a baby is diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, then he needs special medications, and a sweet bar can only be an addition to therapy.
Hematogen cost
The average price for hematogen in Moscow is 20 rubles.
