Stoptussin for cough is one of the popular drugs that has a combined effect on the body. This medication can be taken for inflammation in the respiratory tract, accompanied by an unproductive, paroxysmal or wet cough. Its advantage is that it has several forms and is suitable for treating children and adults.

Compound

Stoptussin phyto syrup is a preparation created on the basis of herbal components. Due to the content of natural components, the medicine does not cause a sharp change in the functioning of the human body. Due to this feature, patients rarely suffer from adverse reactions or complications of therapy.

The product contains the following key ingredients:

  • thyme extract;
  • bioactive components of thyme;
  • liquid plantain extract.

All active components in the syrup are easily absorbed by the body, providing a quick effect on the respiratory tract. In addition to basic compounds, Stoptussin contains honey (pre-purified), prepared water, ethanol, sucrose, and stabilizers.

Elimination of wet cough is achieved through the influence of the herbal components of the drug. Thyme and plantain stimulate the secretory function of the bronchial epithelium. Due to the release of additional portions of mucus, thick sputum is gradually liquefied with its accelerated elimination. Coughing is further enhanced by activating the contractile function of the smooth muscle fibers that envelop the airways.

Thyme simultaneously provides partial inhibition of the vital activity of pathogenic microorganisms.

Interesting! In experiments conducted by the Czech developer, it was shown that Stoptussin syrup minimizes the vital activity of most traditional pathogens of acute respiratory infections and other respiratory pathologies. Due to this property, the patient’s recovery is accelerated.

A medicine based on thyme and thyme reduces the activity of pro-inflammatory agents. If the severity of the pathological process is weak, the use of Stoptussin eliminates the need for parallel use of antimicrobial agents. However, the decision to prescribe antibacterial therapy is made solely by the doctor.

Dosage form

A combination drug created on the basis of two active substances is available in 3 dosage forms:

  • Stoptussin tablets are flat-cylindrical, white, with a chamfer and a notch;
  • Stoptussin drops, which look like a clear, viscous liquid of a yellowish-brown color, and contain the same active ingredients as the tablets;
  • Stoptussin syrup, intended for the treatment of children, is a peripheral antitussive agent.

The drugs that make up the drugs are perfectly absorbed in the body, providing a quick and effective antitussive, mucolytic and expectorant effect. The plant components included in the syrup enhance bronchial secretion, promote liquefaction, rapid separation and transportation of sputum. The medicine is produced by Ivex Pharmaceuticals (Czech Republic)

Indications for use and possible contraindications

Stoptussin phyto cough syrup should be taken with caution. Despite the natural composition of the medication and its mild effect on the patient’s body, if used incorrectly, the risk of developing unpleasant consequences cannot be ruled out.

Traditional indications for use of the product:

  1. wet cough, caused by hypersecretion in the bronchi against the background of respiratory tract diseases in the acute or chronic phase;
  2. dry cough, which is caused by chemical or mechanical irritation of respiratory tract receptors or early stages of disease progression that cause accumulation of thick mucus inside the bronchi;
  3. acute respiratory infections;
  4. colds characterized by seasonal occurrence.

The use of the medication is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), accompanied by increased acidity;
  • individual hypersensitivity of the immune system;
  • rare forms of sucrose intolerance, making the absorption of active substances impossible;
  • severe damage to the kidneys and liver.

Self-administration of Stoptussin cough syrup is not recommended. Before using the syrup, you should consult a therapist or pulmonologist.

Pharmacological properties

The drug Stoptussin is a combination medicine. The pronounced therapeutic effect is due to two main components - guaifenesin and butamirate.

Thanks to this combination, several properties appear on the body:

  • stopping the inflammatory process;
  • stimulation of mucus production;
  • liquefaction of secretions and their removal from the respiratory tract (mucolytic effect);
  • dulling of a cough attack;
  • Providing a local anesthetic effect on nerve fibers and receptors of the mucous membrane of the bronchi and trachea.

For what cough is Stoptussin prescribed? The medicine will be effective not only for a wet cough with difficult to clear sputum, but also for a spastic, paroxysmal type of symptom, when a cough attack interferes with normal sleep, eating and leading a full life.

After using the medication, the active substances are instantly absorbed into the general bloodstream from the intestinal tract and evenly distributed throughout the respiratory tract. After which the medicine is excreted along with urine and feces.

Instructions for use of Stoptussin phyto (method and dosage)

The prescription of the described medication involves monotherapy or the use of the medication in combination with cough suppressants such as Ambrobene or Ascoril (expectorants). It all depends on the severity of the clinical case, as well as the characteristics of the patient’s body.

According to the instructions for use of Stoptussin syrup, the drug is intended for internal use. It is recommended to take cough liquid after meals to minimize the negative impact on the epithelium of the stomach and intestines. The dosage depends on the age of the patient.

The use of Stoptussin syrup for children is intended from 1 year of age. Earlier administration is fraught with negative effects on the gastrointestinal tract with the risk of developing gastritis in the child.

Standard single doses of the drug for patients:

  2. from five to ten years – 5-10 ml;

During pregnancy and breastfeeding

Important! The official instructions from the manufacturer do not recommend the use of Stoptussin for the treatment of cough in pregnant women due to the lack of verified information on the clinical effectiveness and safety of the drug in this group of patients.

However, practitioners sometimes prescribe syrup during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There has not been a single case of negative effects of the drug on the child’s or mother’s body during the corresponding periods of life.
