Sore throat in adults. What to gargle with? Solutions for rinsing and inhalation

Sore throat is dangerous due to its complications. Plaque that accumulates on the tonsils can become a provoking factor for the development of heart and kidney diseases, arthritis and rheumatism. To minimize the risk of serious complications, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. The patient’s task is to get rid of swelling of the tonsils and plaque. Rinsing for purulent sore throat is the main method that solves this problem. If you follow the correct rinsing technique, frequency, and correctly select the composition of the medicinal solution, then you can avoid taking antibiotics.

How to prepare a gargle?

Regardless of what exactly you decide to gargle with, you must adhere to the rules for preparing the solution so as not to aggravate the disease:

  • the prepared solution should be warm
  • if it contains water, it must be boiled or distilled
  • the container for preparing the liquid must be sterile (it should be doused with boiling water before use)

Most often, one dose for rinsing is 200-250 ml

  • you should strictly observe the dosage of substances, and do not make the solution “by eye” (some substances in high concentrations can cause burns)
  • With each subsequent rinse, it is better to prepare a new solution - some substances may lose their properties over time.

Possible complications

With lacunar angina, complications often develop. The most dangerous of them are:

  • tissue phlegmon;
  • abscess formation;
  • swelling of the larynx;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • oxygen deficiency;
  • purulent inflammation of the ear;
  • inflammation of the lymph nodes;
  • development of chronic tonsillitis.

Negative consequences from internal organs are possible. The spread of microbes often leads to kidney damage such as glomerulonephritis, myocarditis and rheumatism.

The most serious complication of tonsillitis is sepsis. It can lead to shock and multiple organ failure (a combination of failure of several functional systems).

Gargling with furatsilin

An old and generation-tested recipe for gargling for sore throats contains a cheap remedy - furatsilin. Don’t let the price of these yellow gargle tablets for sore throat fool you - furatsilin is an effective antiseptic and has virtually no contraindications, which allows it to be used even by pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Furacilin solution has a characteristic yellow color

To prepare a solution of furatsilin you will need a glass of hot water (over 80⁰C) and two tablets of furatsilin. Having thrown them into a glass, you should stir vigorously until the yellow lumps dissolve or first crush them into powder and wait until the solution cools.

To achieve a positive effect, it is necessary to repeat rinsing 6-8 times.

In addition to tablets, pharmacies sell furatsilin solution

Baking soda rinse

A soda solution will effectively clear your throat and have an antiseptic effect. Due to its general availability and low cost, as well as the absence of side effects, the drug has established itself as one of the most common methods of treating sore throat.

Baking soda is in every home

Preparing the solution is incredibly simple: stir 1.5 - 2 tablespoons of soda in a glass of water. To achieve a positive effect, it is necessary to repeat rinsing 4-5 times a day, and the improvement will become noticeable after the first rinse.

Main methods of treatment

Purulent tonsillitis (acute tonsillitis) is a severe infectious disease associated with inflammatory processes in the area of the tonsils. The disease is accompanied by severe pain in the throat, especially when swallowing and talking, enlargement of nearby lymph nodes, and high body temperature.

Upon examination, the patient is diagnosed with redness and swelling of the pharynx and oral cavity, with extensive foci of pus, and narrowing of the physiological passage, causing obstruction of food.

An advanced form of this disease can lead to dangerous complications associated with damage to the kidneys, lungs, and heart.

The basis of successful treatment is drug therapy aimed at deactivating the bacterial pathogen, eliminating symptoms, and increasing the body's defenses.

Traditional medicine is considered an excellent addition to the main treatment. But they will not be able to eliminate the root cause of the disease and their use must be fully agreed with the attending physician. Self-medication in this case is unacceptable, since it can significantly worsen the patient’s condition.

Folk remedies for purulent sore throat will help:

  • reduce the inflammatory process;
  • relieve swelling and pain;
  • disinfect foci of infection;
  • alleviate the patient's condition.

The central place among the means proposed by traditional medicine to combat this infection is occupied by medicinal plants and beekeeping products, which have anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, antiseptic and regenerative properties.

The most common folk methods for treating purulent tonsillitis are:

  • rinsing;
  • steam inhalations;
  • ingestion of warm decoctions;
  • products intended for resorption;
  • therapy with honey and bee products.

These methods are very effective because... deliver natural medicines directly to the affected area.

Iodinol for gargling

A remedy from the past called iodinol has been unfairly forgotten by modern medicine. This blue solution effectively fights bacteria and fungi, so for sore throat the product can be used as a rinse solution.

This should be done with caution and should not be used by children, because accidental ingestion can cause a burn to the mucous membrane of the stomach and esophagus.

Iodinol is a time-tested remedy.
The traditional proportion is: 1 tbsp. a spoonful of the drug in a glass of water. To avoid aggressive effects, experts advise resorting to a more precise dosage, which is counted drop by drop - when the water in the glass has acquired a yellow tint, the desired concentration has been achieved. Rinse three times a day; in more severe cases, repeat every four hours.

What to drink

Drinking plenty of fluids for sore throat is the mainstay of home treatment. First of all, this is necessary to maintain water balance, which is important at high temperatures. Secondly, patients need a large amount of fluid to reduce the manifestations of intoxication. Thirdly, some drinks can disinfect the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and tonsils, and have a mild analgesic effect.

For sore throats, it is recommended to drink a lot of ginger tea. This tea perfectly relieves pain and disinfects the throat. Ginger tea must be prepared from fresh ginger roots, which are peeled and grated or crushed in a blender. Having received 2 teaspoons of crushed root, pour it with a glass of water and boil over low heat for about 20 minutes. After removing from the heat, the broth is filtered and cooled. It is recommended to add 1 teaspoon of honey and lemon juice to the finished tea before drinking.

In order to reduce the temperature during fever, it is necessary to add one fifth of a large lemon to herbal or hot green tea without sweeteners.

All people have been familiar with the recipe for treating sore throat with honey and milk since childhood. This drink has a tonic, vitaminizing, calming, and analgesic effect on a sick person. Honey needs to be dissolved in hot milk, adding a little butter to soothe an irritated throat. At the same time, it is permissible to use honey only if a person is completely sure that he is not allergic to it. Children can only be given milk and honey to drink after the age of 1 year.

Calendula for gargling

Often, as part of complex therapy, along with antibiotics, rinsing with a decoction or tincture of calendula is prescribed. These healing flowers have anti-inflammatory and healing properties, and can also fight germs. Gargling with calendula will not only bring quick results, but will also not harm the mucous membrane of the esophagus.

Calendula is a real storehouse of medicinal substances

If you managed to purchase calendula tincture at the pharmacy, then add 1 tbsp. spoon into a glass of warm water, you can immediately start rinsing. Calendula flowers must be brewed with boiling water: a spoonful of flowers is poured with a glass of boiling water (200 ml). After leaving for 30 minutes, the rinse solution is ready. It is recommended to repeat calendula rinses 4-5 times a day.

In addition to rinsing, calendula can be drunk as tea.

Symptoms of purulent sore throat in adults

And for some people, getting a sore throat is as simple as getting their feet wet, eating cold ice cream, drinking a cold drink, or swimming in cold water.

You can get a sore throat through contact with a sick person, because this disease is transmitted by airborne droplets.

Sore throat is caused by various microbes, most of them streptococci.

As a rule, if you start timely treatment, you can get rid of a sore throat relatively quickly. You can recover in 7 days. But if a sore throat is not treated, the sore throat becomes more severe. The neck becomes swollen due to inflammation of the lymph nodes, it is difficult to open the mouth and the pain when swallowing intensifies. All this is very dangerous due to its complications.

Sore throat, like other diseases, should be treated promptly. Today I will tell you the folk remedies that I myself use for sore throat. But do not diagnose yourself and do not self-medicate; be sure to consult a doctor at the first symptoms indicating a sore throat. Folk remedies can be used in complex therapy.

  • characteristic pain;
  • difficulty swallowing;
  • painful sensations when swallowing;
  • red throat;
  • inflamed tonsils covered with white plaque;
  • sudden fever or chills in a child.

Treatment with kerosene is allowed, but subject to the rules, without which this process will almost certainly result in severe complications, which angina is not even close to. To avoid consequences and get maximum effect you need to:

  1. Use only labeled product. It is sold in hardware stores.
  2. Before rinsing, hold your breath and close your nose.
  3. Draw no more than 20 ml of liquid, rinse for 1-2 seconds maximum.
  4. Spit out the kerosene and breathe a little through your mouth with your nose closed.

Due to its aggressive properties, kerosene is recommended only in particularly severe cases.

One of the techniques used in the treatment of sore throat is local “washing out” of pus, or, simply put, gargling. As infectious disease specialists say: “The temperature will not go down as long as there is plaque on the tonsils.” This expression is correct, because it is pus that provokes inflammation, and the body, in turn, responds with severe fever.

When treating angina, to obtain maximum effect and speed up recovery, it is necessary to use general and local therapeutic actions. In this article we will talk specifically about gargling, as an important and direct method widely used in ENT practice.

Iodinol

Preparations based on iodine are very popular. One of these is Iodinol. It is similar to Lugol's, but the latter is used as a spray, whereas this one is usually used as a gargle. Lugol

This is the most popular iodine-based remedy for treating a throat. It helps with almost any disease or inflammation. Lugol's kills germs but irritates the affected area. If the pain is tolerable, then such treatment will be beneficial. Too strong sensations can signal to the patient about damage. Then you need to reduce your concentration. You can use it 3 times a day, gently lubricating your tonsils with a cotton swab, or you can buy it in the form of a spray.

Therefore, the consequences can be very serious, and they relate, first of all, to the cardiovascular system, skin and musculoskeletal system:

  1. When infectious agents penetrate the brain, it is affected by chorea. This is a disease of the nervous system, characterized by increased excitability - hyperkinesis, manifested in the form of erratic, spastic movements of the limbs.
  2. Arthritis, polyarthritis, rheumatism often appear in the absence of therapeutic measures;
  3. Increasing pain in the heart area may indicate symptoms of rheumatic carditis, which leads to disturbances in the functions of this important organ.
  4. Also, untreated sore throat can cause the development of renal disorders, persistent hyperemia of the skin, pus coming out of the tonsils and entering the mouth, in rare cases causing sepsis - blood poisoning.
  5. Complications that arise from tonsillitis in women carrying a child are extremely dangerous; they pose a risk to the health of the expectant mother and to the life of the baby.
  6. In children, the disease can develop into a retropharyngeal abscess, and since it is accompanied by severe swelling, it can threaten the normal functioning of the respiratory organs. Sometimes pathology can only be cured surgically.

All these facts point to one thing: sore throat is a rather dangerous anomaly that must be treated in the early stages.

Every person experiences a sore throat on average at least 2–3 times a year [1]. The cause of tickling, discomfort, and sometimes severe pain, which significantly reduces the quality of life, in the vast majority of cases is a respiratory infection. Today, approximately 300 “causative agents of sore throat” are known, more than 200 of which are viruses.

Sore throat - how to gargle - folk remedies

It is believed that about 85–95% of cases of sore throat in adults and 70% in children are caused by a viral infection [2]. In other cases, a sore throat is caused by bacteria and, much less commonly, fungi. Sometimes pain is caused by non-infectious causes, but these cases are rather the exception to the rule.

The clinical picture of a sore throat is quite typical: swelling of the pharynx, enlarged tonsils, accompanied by soreness and discomfort of varying degrees. The goal of treatment is to eliminate pain, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, irritation of the throat and dry cough [3]. According to domestic recommendations, patients are prescribed antiseptic local medications, a gentle diet, warm compresses on the front surface of the neck, steam inhalations and gargles [3]. However, the attitude of doctors towards rinsing is far from clear.

It is known that the mucus, which normally covers the lining of the pharynx, performs many important functions. It mechanically protects the epithelium from the action of damaging factors, including microbes, and also contains immunocompetent cells. In addition, the mucous membrane produces interferon, immunoglobulins and lysozyme, thus participating in the processes of local immunity [3].

  1. Bed rest - adherence to this regime is necessary for severe purulent tonsillitis with high temperature and fever, as well as for the purpose of restoring the body’s internal resources.
  2. Drinking regime - it is necessary to consume up to 1.5 - 2 liters of liquid per day in order to remove pathogen toxins from the blood. As drinks you can use warm compotes, jelly, rosehip infusions, fruit drinks, warm tea with lemon.
  3. Diet - avoid the consumption of foods that irritate the mucous membrane of the oropharynx (spicy, salty and fried foods, smoked foods), it is recommended to consume food enriched with vitamins, mainly group B and C.
  4. Antibacterial therapy - protected penicillins (amoxiclav, augmentin), cephalosporins of 2-4 generations (cefotaxime, cefepime) can be used as etiotropic therapy (aimed at eliminating the pathogen). Dosages and methods of administration of antibacterial drugs depend on the severity of the patient’s condition, his age and morphofunctional data.

Local treatment

Miramistin for gargling

Back in the USSR, a remedy was invented that is still recognized today as one of the most effective for gargling - miramistin. It affects not only bacteria and fungi, but also viruses, enhances the immune response and reduces bacterial resistance to antibacterial drugs.

Miramistin affects infections and cleanses the oral cavity

Rinsing for adults who suffer from sore throat is performed in a volume of 10-15 ml of product per procedure. You should repeat rinsing with miramistin 3-4 times a day.

It is also advisable to inhale a solution of miramistin for angina.

Causes of pathology

Lacunar tonsillitis causes damage to the palatine, pharyngeal, lingual, and tubal tonsils, but more often pus-filled lacunae are found in the palatine tonsils (tonsils). Up to 90% of cases of the disease are caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci (group A), less often by other bacteria:

  • staphylococci;
  • pneumococci;
  • Haemophilus influenzae;
  • Klebsiella

In addition, sore throat can initially be caused by viruses (enteroviruses, adenoviruses), which weaken the body's resistance, as a result of which bacteria begin to actively settle on the mucous membrane of the tonsils.

In childhood, 70% of cases of the disease are detected after initial contact with certain strains of streptococcus and staphylococcus. In the future, lacunar tonsillitis can develop after any decrease in local immunity - with hypothermia, consumption of cold food, drinks, a decrease in the general resistance of the body, after a severe infectious disease. This occurs due to the fact that bacteria remain in foci of chronic infection in the body - in the nasopharynx, sinuses, teeth, gums, from where they can invade the tonsils.

Would you like to know how lacunar tonsillitis occurs in children? Then you should read this article.

In addition, sore throat during late pregnancy can become a serious complication for the health of the mother and the unborn baby.

In general, the state of the immune system is a determining factor for the development of lacunar tonsillitis: in the presence of strong immunity, pathology occurs much less frequently, and its treatment is faster and easier. People with certain systemic diseases are more susceptible to sore throat. Among the risk factors for the occurrence of the disease:

  • allergic conditions;
  • diabetes;
  • blood diseases;
  • rheumatism;
  • tuberculosis;
  • stress;
  • unfavorable environment;
  • smoking;
  • chronic sinusitis;
  • periodontal disease;
  • caries.

Occasionally, the causes of lacunar tonsillitis are associated with trauma to the tonsils and direct infection in their tissue, for example, when a bone gets in, damage from a tooth fragment, after FGS.

Gargling with iodine

Iodine is often used to gargle. You must be extremely careful with this product, because the wrong concentration can lead to a chemical burn. Under no circumstances should you gargle with pure iodine! For rinsing, use only an aqueous solution containing only a few drops of iodine. The solution is prepared in the following proportion: 5 drops of iodine are used per glass of warm boiled water.

When gargling with iodine, follow the dosage!

It is most advisable to prepare a rinse solution that contains iodine in combination with other substances.

It is important to know that iodine is not used as a gargle for children.

Gargling with iodine and salt

And if iodine itself is ineffective, then in combination with salt and soda, a rinse solution works wonders. Such rinses will help cleanse the mucous membrane of plaque, relieve pain and unpleasant symptoms, and the components of the solution actively neutralize fungi, bacteria and viral infections.

Soda, salt and iodine are an effective remedy for sore throat.

To prepare the solution you need:

  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 3 drops iodine
  • 200 ml water

Before using the solution, all components must be thoroughly dissolved in water.
It is important to use warm water and prepare the solution immediately before use. If you carry out such rinses three times a day, then you can soon forget about the disease.

Gargling with peroxide

It has been proven that gargling with hydrogen peroxide allows you to wash away mucus along with pathogenic organisms from the source of the disease. In addition, by providing an antiseptic effect, peroxide, which is in every home medicine cabinet, can speed up the healing process by removing and neutralizing both microorganisms and their waste products.

Peroxide is used not only to disinfect wounds

Rinsing with peroxide is simple and does not cause discomfort. To obtain the expected result, you must strictly adhere to the proportions and make a solution of the required concentration so as not to harm your body. For one 200 ml portion of rinse, add a tablespoon of peroxide to a glass of water. If you want to use hydroperite in tablets, then a 200 ml tablet is enough.

If you have a sore throat, you should gargle three times a day, and then rinse your mouth with boiled water to wash away any remaining solution.

Is it necessary to treat the disease?

This disease is quite common and can develop at any age. There is hardly a person who has not suffered from such a disease at least once. One of its varieties is purulent tonsillitis (or purulent tonsillitis). In this case, a characteristic plaque in the form of purulent contents appears on the tonsils.

Most people treat this disease incorrectly, as a result of which it develops into a chronic form. And it takes a very long time to treat it in such conditions, using strong antibiotics, often expensive

To prevent this from happening, it is very important to carry out the correct treatment.

Here are the symptoms you should consult a doctor for, as they are the main signs of purulent tonsillitis:

  • very intense pain in the throat, intensifying not only when swallowing even liquids, but also with any movement of the palate;
  • general increase in temperature (usually above 38 degrees);
  • decreased appetite as a result of refusing food (as it is painful for a person to swallow);
  • general weakness due to loss of appetite and lack of adequate nutrition;
  • pain in the head area;
  • heavy sweating;
  • pain in muscles and joints;
  • growth of tonsils and covering them with purulent contents.

The last symptom is extremely dangerous for the patient.
After all, the tonsils can increase in size so much that they begin to block the path of air entering the throat. And the presence of purulent plaque on them is no less dangerous: pus is a source of infection in the body, which can lead to serious complications. That is why purulent sore throat must be treated, and this process must begin as early as possible. Let us consider in more detail the means used in modern medicine for gargling.
