In the article we will look at the instructions for use with Cerucal injections.

Vomiting, especially severe and prolonged vomiting, is a very unpleasant process, but antiemetics, such as Cerucal, can effectively block this symptom. The drug is safe and effective, it can be prescribed to reduce the intensity or suppress the gag reflex in adults and children.

In the instructions for use, Cerucal is presented as an effective antiemetic that eliminates nausea and stops or reduces the frequency of vomiting in patients of different age categories due to its effect on the structures of the brain and peripheral nerve endings. "Cerucal" simultaneously functions as a medicinal remedy for hiccups and a prokinetic agent, which increases the intensity of food movement through the gastrointestinal tract.

We will tell you below how long the Cerucal injection works in a child and an adult.

Characteristic

The main substance of the drug is metoclopramide. The mechanism of its functioning is based on blocking chemoreceptors in the medulla oblongata, as well as serotonin and dopamine receptors in the duodenum and stomach, thanks to which the digestive organs send signals to the brain.

Among other things, metoclopramide affects the nervous autonomic system. Thanks to this effect, he can:

  • strengthen the muscle tone of the intestines, stomach and lower esophageal sphincter;
  • reduce esophageal motor activity;
  • improve intestinal motility;
  • accelerate the movement of food along the digestive tract;
  • promote the release of bile;
  • reduce hiccups;
  • reduce dyskinesia of the bile ducts and gallbladder;
  • reduce hyperacid stasis;
  • weaken the spasm of the sphincter of Oddi, which is located in the area where the bile duct exits into the duodenum.

Antiemetic injections "Cerukal" do not affect the production of bile and pancreatic enzymes, gastric juice in the human body.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Cerucal injections are not prescribed to women in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, since there is no information about how the drug affects the intrauterine development of the fetus and there is no experience in using this drug in obstetrics.

The use of Cerucal injection solution for women in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy is possible according to indications, but only in situations where the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the possible risks to the fetus. Treatment is carried out under the supervision of a doctor.

Prescribing Cerucal injections to women who are breastfeeding requires consultation with a doctor. The drug is excreted in breast milk, so it is preferable to interrupt lactation during therapy.

Indications for use

The scope of Cerucal injections is quite wide; it is not limited to the fight against vomiting. The product is used in the following cases:

  • hypotension and atony of the intestines and stomach, including postoperative;
  • constant hiccups or vomiting of various origins;
  • reflux gastroesophageal disease;
  • nausea of various origins (gastrointestinal diseases, food poisoning);
  • heartburn;
  • diabetic gastric paresis;
  • irritable bowel syndrome.

Intramuscularly, Cerucal is also often used as an antiemetic drug when undergoing radiation therapy and using cytostatic agents. The medication for duodenal and gastric intubation helps to relax the muscles of the esophagus and stomach, which facilitates the diagnostic procedure. Before an X-ray examination, Cerucal can also be prescribed, since it allows you to quickly empty the stomach and remove its contents into the duodenum.

The medicine is almost ineffective for vomiting, the causes of which are psychogenic and vestibular factors. Thus, it would be pointless to take this medication for motion sickness syndrome.

Ways to get rid of hiccups

There are various ways to eliminate hiccups at home. In addition to the use of medications, other methods of combating this phenomenon are used.

Plot for hiccups

It is generally accepted that if a person starts to hiccup, it means someone remembers him. In order to identify this person, you should guess the names of your friends, then moisten your little finger with saliva and run it across your eyebrow. If, when mentioning a name, a hair remains on the finger, then the person has been identified.

It happens that when damage is caused, a person hiccups so much that no traditional medicine helps him. In such cases, you should use a hiccup spell to remove damage. It should be repeated three times, out loud and clearly. “Hiccup, hiccup, she is walking on a crooked mare, around the swamp, the mare fell, the hiccup is gone.”

Breathing methods for hiccups

The most effective breathing method for hiccups is holding your breath. Breathing should be held as long as such a physical possibility exists. As a rule, after using several such delays in a row, the hiccups stop.

You can also drink a glass of water, then inhale, spread your arms to the sides and exhale, lower them. After this, take several full breaths through your nose.

Massage for hiccups

For hiccups, it is useful to do acupressure, together with methods of eliminating it such as holding your breath. It is recommended to massage the following points:

  1. On the back of the hand, between the index finger and thumb, a centimeter from the fold of skin.
  2. At the end of the fold of skin that forms when the arm is bent at the elbow.
  3. On the inner surface of the forearm, a centimeter above the wrist joint.
  4. In the abdominal area, two centimeters below the end of the sternum.
  5. On the surface of the back, on the line that connects the shoulder blades from below, two centimeters from the spinal column.
  6. Three centimeters below the previous point.

Contraindications

Cerucal injections during pregnancy are contraindicated for women in the first trimester. In the remaining six months, it can be prescribed by a doctor if the benefits of its use outweigh the possible harm. The drug is not allowed to be prescribed during lactation, as it passes freely into breast milk. The tablets are contraindicated for children under 14 years of age; for such patients it is better to administer the drug parenterally.

Contraindications also include:

  • gastric pyloric stenosis;
  • pheochromocytoma;
  • bleeding of the stomach and intestines;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • age up to two years;
  • history of seizures and epilepsy;
  • perforation of the gastrointestinal tract.

The drug is prescribed very carefully to people who suffer from arterial hypo- or hypertension, liver failure, Parkinson's disease, bronchial asthma, and patients over 65 years of age. If kidney function is reduced, the drug is prescribed in a reduced amount.

When not to

The medicine has contraindications, so giving it to a child without a doctor’s prescription is dangerous. Children who have:

  • epilepsy;
  • glaucoma;
  • bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • pheochromocytoma (a tumor that activates excessive production of adrenaline or norepinephrine);
  • extrapyramidal (motor) disorders;
  • gastric perforation (for example, with peptic ulcer);
  • peritonitis.

And, of course, patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components should not take the medicine. The drug is not prescribed to children under 2 years of age.

With caution, only under the supervision of a doctor and careful monitoring of changes in the child’s condition, the drug is indicated for patients with certain pathologies:

  • liver and/or kidney dysfunction;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • hypertonic disease.

Actually, childhood itself is the reason for a particularly attentive attitude towards the patient who is prescribed Cerucal. These factors increase the risk of side effects.

No amateur performances! Only a doctor can prescribe the drug for your child.

Side effects

Nervous system: rarely, a feeling of fatigue, a feeling of fear, dizziness, anxiety, headaches, drowsiness, depression, tinnitus may appear; sometimes (mainly in children) dyskinetic syndrome develops, that is, tic-like involuntary twitching of the muscles of the shoulders, neck or face.

Extrapyramidal disorders may appear: rhythmic protrusion of the tongue, spasm of the facial muscles, trismus, bulbar speech type, spasm of extraocular muscles (including oculogyric crisis), muscle hypertonicity, opisthotonus, spasmodic torticollis.

With prolonged treatment, some elderly patients, adolescents and children (if the dosage of 0.5 mg/kg per day is exceeded) may develop parkinsonism (limited mobility, muscle twitching, tremor). Elderly patients with chronic kidney failure are likely to develop tardive dyskinesia.

Also, in isolated situations, neuroleptic malignant syndrome may develop (characteristic symptoms: increased blood pressure, changes in consciousness, muscle contracture, fever).

Hematopoietic system: agranulocytosis.

Cardiovascular system: increased or decreased pressure, supraventricular tachycardia.

Gastrointestinal tract: diarrhea, dry mouth, constipation.

Endocrine system: if the drug is used for a long time, in rare cases, gynecomastia may occur, that is, enlargement of the mammary glands in men, galactorrhea (milk spontaneously leaking from the mammary glands) or abnormalities in the menstrual cycle. If such phenomena develop, the drug should be discontinued.

Due to possible undesirable effects caused by the nervous system, it is advisable to refrain from driving when using it.

How long does it take and how does it work?

After the drug has been injected into the muscle, it acts within 10-15 minutes.

Syringe with needle

If you inject the active substance intravenously, the effect will develop after 1-3 minutes, almost immediately after the injection.

The duration of the injection is half an hour after intravenous administration and 1.5-2 hours after intramuscular administration.

The main purpose of the medicine is to block the gag reflex.

It acts at the level of the central nervous system and brain. The result develops due to the suppression of the activity of dopamine and serotonin receptors. Then the center in the cerebral cortex ceases to perceive signals, and the urge stops.

The occurrence of atony of the esophageal sphincter, diarrhea, heartburn, and hiccups is blocked. Injections allow you to stimulate the activity of the gastrointestinal tract.

A side effect is increased prolactin synthesis.

The drug is processed in the liver, after which it is excreted from the body.

Interaction with other substances

Do not dilute ampoules with medicine with alkaline solutions. When a patient is treated with paracetamol or antibiotics, according to the instructions for use, Cerucal injections will enhance the effect of the prescribed drugs. Undesirable symptoms may develop, and the liver will suffer from toxic effects.

When interacting with Cimetidine and Digoxin, Cerucal solution for injection reduces the absorption of these drugs, reducing their therapeutic effect.

Injections simultaneously with alcohol consumption suppress the central nervous system, and the speed of reactions slows down. It is necessary to avoid simultaneous use with H2-histamine blockers, since antihistamines are ineffective in this case.

When Cerucal interacts with hepatotoxic drugs, the liver suffers. A significant toxic effect on the organ will cause serious consequences.

The patient can always refuse to use Cerucal, since pharmacies have analogues with a similar effect. Before replacing the drug, you must consult a specialist, and before use, be sure to read the instructions.

Instructions for use for Cerucal injections

When using injections, three injections per day of 2 ml are given (children over 14 years old and adults). The solution is administered intravenously or intramuscularly. When choosing the intravenous route, the drug should be administered as slowly as possible to reduce the likelihood of side effects.

As the instructions for use of Cerucal indicate, for children the dosage is calculated depending on body weight. Most often they take 0.1 mg per kilogram of weight, per day the maximum dosage is 0.5 mg per kilogram.

If the patient is being prepared for a stomach examination, then one or two Cerucal injections are given 10 minutes before the procedure. When using cytostatics through a dropper, infusion administration is practiced. This procedure is done two hours before using cytostatics.

The dosage of Cerucal depends on the person’s weight - from 0.5 to 1 mg per kilogram of body weight per hour. When a cytostatic has been introduced, infusions of the drug are carried out during the day at the rate of 0.25 to 0.5 mg of the drug per kilogram per hour.

Regardless of the method of administration of the drug, it is recommended to regularly change the injection area. In order to dilute the product in ampoules, the most optimal option is used - a 5% glucose solution or sodium chloride. If the injection is given into a muscle, the drug is not diluted with anything beforehand.

Additional Notes

There are several features to pay attention to:

  • There is the possibility of a less predictable reaction when using the medicine in adolescence, which is why in this case additional supervision by the attending physician is required.
  • During treatment, it is recommended to avoid activities that require concentration, for example, when driving, as emergency situations are possible.
  • If there is a need to replace the drug with an alternative drug, the attending physician in most cases will choose a solution of Metoclopramide or Perinorm.
  • In some situations it is necessary to deviate from the recommended dosages of Cerucal. The dosage is always prescribed individually, for example, if a person has serious pathologies of the kidneys or liver, then the standard dose will not be prescribed to him.

Analogues of Cerucal injections

It is necessary to replace the medication in cases where there is an allergic reaction to the active substance and contraindications.

  • "Motilak". Unlike Cerucal, it contains other active substances. In the first, the antiemetic effect is due to domperidone, which is more prokinetic. Thanks to it, the motility of the digestive tract is stimulated, normal activity of the intestines and stomach is ensured. This drug should be taken in a situation where there are dyspeptic defects that occur against the background of insufficiently active gastric emptying. Motilak helps relieve the feeling of fullness, eliminates heartburn, flatulence and belching. More side effects appear from the Cerucal solution.
  • "No-Shpa" is often prescribed simultaneously with "Cerucal". It can be taken at any time during pregnancy, as it not only does not increase uterine tone, but also reduces it. Like Cerucal, it is one of the means of symptomatic treatment and prevention. “No-Spa” allows you to eliminate spasms to a greater extent and reduce the intensity of pain attacks. Both drugs are produced in the form of solutions for intramuscular administration and tablets. "No-Shpa" does not affect the activity of the central nervous system, reduces intestinal motility and dilates blood vessels. Its main component is drotaverine hydrochloride.
  • "Ganaton." This is a foreign-made analogue of “Cerucal”, the active component of which is itopride, which belongs to the group of drugs for the stomach and intestines that stimulate motility. "Ganaton" is also indicated in the treatment of dyspeptic non-ulcer disorders, which are characterized by nausea, flatulence, vomiting and heartburn. Both drugs are dopamine receptor antagonists. "Ganaton" differs from "Cerucal" in that it has fewer side effects.

Compound

The drug solution includes the active substance in the form of metoclopramide hydrochloride.

Unpacked medicine

It is complemented by:

  • distilled water;
  • silica;
  • gelatin;
  • potato starch;
  • lactose monohydrate;
  • magnesium stearate;
  • sodium sulfite;
  • sodium chloride;
  • edetate disodium.

The composition allows you to act on receptors, actively suppressing attacks of vomiting.

Injection ampoules are intended for intramuscular or intravenous administration. They are produced in a volume of 2 ml and placed in a plastic package of 5 pieces.

Reviews from doctors

This remedy is often used by pregnant women. It is tried and true and helps with the gag reflex. Patients in an interesting position are recommended to take it before visiting the dentist, making the intervention of a specialist more comfortable.

The drug has a minimal number of side effects and works quickly.

This is a good antiemetic that has a central effect. It relieves vomiting and nausea of various origins, is convenient to use due to the variety of release forms, and is used in pediatric practice.

The drug has been well studied. Helps with severe nausea and vomiting, and with various gastrointestinal diseases. Its price is affordable for everyone. Can be administered intramuscularly if vomiting prevents the use of tablets.

The drug is not designed for long-term use.

Among the disadvantages, there is a decrease in appetite for a long period after the injection.

When compared with modern antiemetics, Cerucal has lower effectiveness.

Patient reviews

The drug is very effective against vomiting and nausea. Users claim that it saves them from motion sickness. The drug begins to function within 15 minutes and completely eliminates the feeling of nausea.

The drug helps with stomach problems when vomiting occurs due to eating fatty or heavy foods. Thanks to the injection of the drug, vomiting quickly passes, and the condition returns to normal after a while.

“Cerukal” fights toxicosis in pregnant women and helps them out in this difficult situation. That is why patients often recommend having the drug in their home medicine cabinet and recommend it to their loved ones.

There are also negative reviews. So, for some patients the drug did not help at all. For example, when severe nausea appeared after nervous stress, which appeared periodically for two years, it was accompanied by chills and vomiting, doctors diagnosed GERD. For nausea, doctors only injected Cerucal. But for some patients, in this case, neither ampoules nor tablets bring the desired result, and the nausea does not stop. In such a situation, everything points to the individual insensitivity of the body.

The disadvantage of the drug is strong side effects, so if unwanted symptoms occur, you should consult your doctor.
