How to take and for what type of cough Gerbion syrup with ivy

The Slovenian company KRKA produces many medicines. Their cough medicines based on natural extracts have earned the honor and respect of doctors and patients. They are positioned by the manufacturer as safe herbal medicines for adults and children. Gerbion syrup with ivy is especially often prescribed. Products with climbing plant extract are perceived as universal (for both types of cough). In fact, the medication has a narrower spectrum of action, which means it is used according to special rules.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Ivy leaf extract contains many beneficial components, which determine its effect. The most significant of them are triterpene saponins, for example, hederacoside C and alpha-hederin.

As is known, alpha-hederin inhibits the endocytosis of beta2-adrenergic receptors, which increases the activity of beta2-adrenergic cells on the mucous membranes of the bronchi, as well as the epithelial layer of the lungs. In this case, the level of calcium ions in the cells of the bronchial mucosa decreases, promoting bronchodilation. As a result of stimulation of beta2-adrenergic receptors, there is an increase in the production of surfactant by type 2 alveolar epithelial cells. Therefore, the viscosity of mucus decreases and its removal from the respiratory system is facilitated.

Indications for use

The mixture with ivy is intended for the complex treatment of respiratory tract pathologies, which are accompanied by difficult sputum discharge and an obsessive cough. The drug is prescribed for acute and chronic lesions of the bronchi and lungs in parallel with etiotropic therapy (taking into account the reasons).

For infectious diseases, the use of antibacterial, antiviral or immunomodulatory drugs together with the syrup is required.

Ivy extract does not have antimicrobial properties and is not able to eliminate infection from the lungs.

It is not advisable to prescribe Gerbion for dry cough or in combination with antitussive drugs. This will most likely lead to the accumulation of an impressive volume of secretion in the lungs, which is fraught with complications.

Reviews of Herbion ivy syrup

It should be noted that such drugs are in great demand among patients due to their naturalness. In general, many people prefer to be treated with herbal remedies, which, in their opinion, will not cause additional harm to the body. At the same time, reviews of Herbion ivy syrup regarding its effectiveness are very varied.

Some patients report that after taking this syrup, they noticed that the cough quickly became “softer”, sputum discharge improved, and soon all unwanted symptoms disappeared altogether. Usually in discussions, users indicate that it took them 3-4 days to fully recover.

However, there are reports in which patients say that taking this drug only made their cough worse, so they started using other medications, but there was no relief. As a result, when visiting a doctor, they were prescribed antibiotics, inhalations with Ambrobene and a number of other procedures, which helped improve their health within a week.

As experts note, such situations usually arise when several cough medications are taken at the same time. This leads to worsening sputum discharge, and sometimes to the development of a bacterial infection. Therefore, during treatment, it is necessary to follow the doctor’s instructions, and if undesirable symptoms develop, immediately report it, and not engage in independent selection of treatment. Only in this case can you expect a quick recovery.

Contraindications

Gerbion syrup is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. This is due to the lack of clinical trials among this population and adequate evidence of safety. Due to natural imperfections in the functioning of the respiratory system in children during the first 2 years of life, while taking the drug, the symptoms of the disease may worsen.

Herbion is contraindicated for persons with individual sensitivity to ivy and other representatives of the Araliaceae family. The product is not prescribed to persons with fructose intolerance. With caution, syrup is recommended for people with severe diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (ulcers, gastritis).

This is due to the simultaneous effect of saponins on the receptors of the lungs and stomach with a possible increase in the secretion of digestive juices.

Herbion with primrose

This syrup is used when a dry cough turns into a wet one.

Composition of the herbal medicine

The main components of the drug Gerbion primrose syrup are primrose root and thyme herb (water extracts), auxiliary components are levomenthol, sucrose and preservative E218.

Primrose root is valuable for the saponins, triterpene glycosides and vitamin C it contains. They relax the bronchi, increase the secretion of mucus, dilute it and promote its elimination. In addition, they create a protective film on the bronchial mucosa, which prevents their irritation, stopping the cough reflex.

Thyme extract has a mild diuretic effect, which is good for treating senile cough. Thymol essential oil is excreted through the bronchi and thus has a therapeutic effect.

Levomenthol has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, reduces pain when coughing. It makes breathing easier and enhances the effect of thymol.

Indications for use

Herbion primrose syrup is used for the following diseases:

Herbion with primrose is taken for pneumonia

  • colds associated with hypothermia of the body, which include acute respiratory viral infections;
  • complications of viral infections accompanied by a productive cough: all types of bronchitis, pneumonia, tracheitis;
  • spasmodic cough after viral colds;
  • senile cough associated with decreased contractility of the heart.

The drug is used for complex treatment.

Features of application

It is better to take primrose syrup after meals, in the following dosages:

  • 2–5 years: ½ tsp. three times;
  • 5–14 years: 5 ml 3 times a day;
  • from 14 and older: 2 scoops up to 4 times a day.

Take the medicine with warm water. You must not drink or eat food for half an hour.

Can the drug be used by pregnant women?

There are no sufficient studies on the effect of the components of the drug on the fetus, so the decision on the possibility of treatment with the drug is made by the doctor, after weighing all the risks.

Reviews

Most patients are satisfied with herbion on ivy. By analyzing reviews, as well as subjective impressions, we can draw a conclusion about the effectiveness and pleasant taste of the product.

Among the advantages, consumers note:

  • natural composition;
  • rapid development of the effect;
  • complete elimination of wet cough after completion of the course;
  • good tolerance;
  • a minimum list of restrictions on use;
  • Can be used for the whole family (children and adults).

Negative impressions generated by allergies or lack of treatment results arise exceptionally. Most patients complain about the limited shelf life after opening the package or the overly sweet taste. Considering the natural ingredients, the minimal amount of preservatives, as well as the specific dosage form (syrup), such claims can be considered unfounded.

Gedeon syrup containing ivy extract is suitable for children and adults who are being treated for a dry, obsessive cough. The drug is purchased at retail pharmacies without a doctor's prescription. If there is no effect from therapy within 5 days or if alarming symptoms (temperature, purulent sputum, etc.) occur, you should consult a doctor to adjust the prescription.

Herbion with plantain

When treating dry cough, it is best to give children Gerbion syrup with plantain because:

  • it is created on the basis of plant components;
  • does not affect the central nervous system.

Cough syrup has a number of other valuable properties:

  • It does not interact with other drugs, so it can be safely used in complex treatment.
  • Protects epithelial cells of the airways.
  • It is an immunomodulator (thanks to the vitamin C included in the composition), therefore it is indicated for frequent illnesses.

Herbion works as follows:

  • The sputum becomes thinner and the non-productive cough turns into a productive one.
  • The proliferation of microbes that cause the infection is stopped.
  • The mucous membranes of the respiratory tract are softened.
  • Reduces pain when coughing.
  • Sputum begins to be coughed up.

Doctors and those who have used this remedy note the rapid onset of a positive effect.

Composition of the herbal medicine

Cough syrup contains the following ingredients:

  • The main components are extracts of plantain leaf and mallow flowers, dissolved in water (1.25 g per single serving of 5 ml).
  • Ascorbic acid (65 mg).
  • Orange oil (12.5 mg per serving) for flavor.
  • Sucrose (4 g).
  • Food preservative E218 with antiseptic properties.

The active components can serve as an allergen, so they are diluted with water in a ratio of 1:5, forming a moderate concentration.

Indications for use

  • inflammation of the respiratory tract, accompanied by a dry cough;
  • viral diseases;
  • chronic cough.

Can be used by smokers to relieve a painful, dry cough.

Features of application

Cough syrup is taken after meals. Shake the bottle of syrup vigorously before use. You need to take the medicine with plenty of warm liquid. It can be water, compote, jelly, unsweetened and weak tea, green is best.

Take the medicine in the following dosage (5 ml = 1 scoop):

  • children 2–7 years old: 5 ml three times a day;
  • schoolchildren 7–14 years old: no more than 30 ml in 3 doses;
  • teenagers and adults: 10 ml 5 times a day.

The dosage of Gerbion should be prescribed by a specialist.
It is not recommended to take the medicine at night. The course of treatment can last up to 3 weeks. When treating dry senile cough, or caused by smoking, the mixture is continued until the symptoms disappear. Rare side effects may include allergic reactions if the body does not accept mallow or plantain. They manifest themselves in the form of hives, itching, and rash. In this case, you must stop taking the medication and take an antihistamine. In addition to allergic manifestations, changes in the gastrointestinal tract are possible: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. After stopping the medication, the unpleasant symptoms go away on their own.

Interaction with other drugs

Herbion plantain syrup can be used in combination with other mucolytic agents, but with caution. At the same time, any group of drugs can be used, except for antitussives, which block the release of sputum.

Who can take the syrup?

Taking the drug from 2 years of age

All age groups can take the drug, if there is no allergy to its components, from 2 years of age.

The herbal medicine does not have a toxic effect, but it is better not to use it for pregnant women, especially in the 1st and 3rd trimesters. It is not recommended for lactating women.

Syrup is contraindicated for those who are allergic to fructose and the components of the drug. It is prescribed with caution to patients with impaired carbohydrate metabolism, patients with diabetes mellitus (5 ml of syrup contains 4 g of sucrose) and oxalaturia (due to the vitamin C content).

Recommendations for choosing syrup

The cough reflex is a means of cleansing the body, and it must be used skillfully. In order to choose the best one from the variety of cough medicines, it is necessary to take into account that they, depending on the mode of action, come in 3 types.

Mucoregulatory (mucolytic). They are used in the early stages of infection, for non-productive cough. They thin mucus but do not increase its production.

Expectorants. They are used when a wet cough occurs. By enhancing the contractions of the bronchi, they increase the production of sputum and facilitate its removal. Pathogenic microorganisms are removed along with mucus.

Antitussives. They act on the cough center of the brain, inhibiting it. Suppressing the cough reflex does not contribute to the removal of sputum. Therefore, such drugs are not effective in treating respiratory tract infections and have many side effects. They are dangerous to use when there is increased secretion of mucus in the respiratory organs. As for the use of Gerbion drugs, you need to adhere to the sequence.

The first stage of the disease is a dry cough, accompanied by a burning sensation and sore throat. Plantain or ivy syrups are used. When phlegm appears, syrup with plantain is replaced with Herbion with primrose, which promotes expectoration and cleanses the respiratory tract. The different effects of these groups of drugs is the reason that treatment should be started after consultation with a doctor, especially for nursing mothers and pregnant women.
