Choleretic antispasmodic - Odeston tablets: review of instructions, reviews of use, comparison with analogues

Odeston: beneficial properties of the medicine
Odeston is a synthetic drug that stimulates bile formation, facilitating its entry into the lumen of the duodenum. Bile is produced in liver cells. Stimulation of its entry into the intestines, under the influence of the drug, helps to accelerate the digestion process and activate peristalsis, as well as normalize stool.

What is it used for?

The main diseases for the treatment of which Odeston is used:

  • Dyskinesia of the bile ducts
  • Chronic noncalculous cholecystitis
  • Cholelithiasis
  • Cholangitis

In addition, the drug will be useful for patients who have undergone surgery on the gallbladder and its ducts. In the presence of bile hyposecretion, manifested by nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and prolonged constipation, the prescription of this medication is also necessary.

Alcohol compatibility

The active component of the drug, gimecromone, does not interact with ethyl alcohol, therefore, when they interact, undesirable reactions of the body may occur. For diseases of the liver and gall bladder, alcohol is completely contraindicated, since it puts a heavy burden on the body. The danger of their compatibility is as follows:

  • lack of therapeutic effect from taking the medication;
  • decreased immunity;
  • increased load on the liver and kidneys;
  • the risk of side effects increases;
  • abdominal pain in the navel area;
  • ulcerative lesion of the stomach.

A one-time use of alcohol and Odeston tablets will not cause negative consequences, but with their systematic interaction, severe intoxication of the body, itching, yellowing of the skin, abnormal stool, and severe headache may occur. Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that medical help is indispensable.

What is it prescribed for?

Gimecromone belongs to the pharmaceutical group of choleretic drugs that relieve spasm of the bile outflow tract, sphincter of Oddi. Thus, the excretion of bile secretion improves, stagnation and the formation of stones are prevented, digestion is stabilized, for which Odeston is prescribed.
Main indications for use:

  • dysfunction of the bile secretion drainage pathway, spasm of the sphincter of Oddi;
  • chronically inflamed gallbladder without stone formation;
  • prolonged inflammation of the biliary tract;
  • after surgical interventions on the liver;
  • decreased production of bile secretion, manifested by dyspepsia such as nausea, loss of appetite, constipation.

For liver pathologies such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, gimecromone is ineffective as monotherapy. What Odeston tablets help with in this case is the relief of pain symptoms. The liver does not recover, since the drug does not have a hepatoprotective effect.

How to take the medicine?

Odeston tablets are taken orally according to the instructions for use. The daily dose is selected individually by a gastroenterologist or therapist in accordance with the disease. When prescribing, the doctor will explain how to take Odeston for adults. Recommended regimen: 1-2 tablets 3 times a day, maximum dose per day – 1200 mg.

Before or after meals

The drug enhances the secretion and excretion of bile, one of the enzymes involved in digestion. The drug should be taken before meals or after a small snack, 30-40 minutes before the main meal. Odeston drunk during or after a meal will lead to a delayed increase in bile secretion, impaired absorption and, as a result, a decrease in effectiveness.

How long can you take the drug?

The drug is taken according to the regimen for two weeks. Exceeding the recommended periods is possible only on the recommendation of the attending physician.

Side effects.

When taking Odeston, negative symptoms may appear such as headache, various allergic reactions, diarrhea, problems with the gastrointestinal tract, namely the formation of ulcers, abdominal pain, flatulence.

Side effects appear when taking maximum doses of the drug, during long-term treatment, but they can also appear after the first time the medicine is tried.

Pharmacokinetics.

The drug is well adsorbed in the body and within 2-3 hours the highest content of the drug in the blood is achieved. It binds extremely poorly to plasma proteins. Excretion occurs mainly through the kidneys; up to 95% of the substance leaves the body with urine.

Interaction with other drugs.

It should be remembered that when you are taking several drugs at once, they can reduce or enhance the effect of each other. Such misuse can lead to either a decrease in effectiveness or an overdose of one of the substances.

For example, Odeston is not recommended to be used simultaneously with morphine; it will weaken the effect of Odeston, and indirect anticoagulants, on the contrary, enhance its effect on the body.

Prescription for pregnant women and during breastfeeding.

The drug is not prescribed during pregnancy and lactation, as it may harm the baby.

Odeston can be prescribed to pregnant women only in special cases, when there is confidence that it will not harm the fetus and will help the mother, but the dosage must be determined by the attending physician.

Analogues of Odeston

If there is a need to replace the drug Odeston, the doctor may prescribe another drug that can have a similar effect. The pharmaceutical market provides a wide range of choleretic drugs that make it possible to compete with Odeston.

There is no complete analogue of Odeston, which contains hymecromone, so it can only be replaced with a medicine with a different composition, but a similar therapeutic effect.

When choosing an analogue, the doctor takes into account:

  • final diagnosis;
  • stage of the disease and its severity;
  • intensity of symptoms;
  • patient's age;
  • concomitant diseases;
  • characteristics of the body.

You can replace taking Odeston with the following medications:

Tanacehol

This is a herbal medicine based on tansy flower extract. It has a pronounced choleretic effect, relieves spasms in the bile ducts, normalizes the functioning of the liver and digestive system. Unlike Odeston, it can be used in pediatrics.

Allohol

Allohol is a common choleretic drug of plant origin. The composition contains extracts of garlic, nettle, dry bile and activated carbon. It can be used as replacement therapy for bile acid deficiency; it also reduces the process of fermentation and putrefaction in the intestinal cavity.

Hofitol

Hofitol is a medicine with a choleretic effect based on a dry extract of field artichoke leaves. It has a diuretic effect, reduces the content of nitrogenous metabolic products in the blood serum. Often included in the treatment regimen for hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Gepabene

Gepabene is a drug for the treatment of diseases of the liver and biliary tract. It contains 2 active ingredients: silymarin and fumarin. The first is an extract from milk thistle fruits, which has the ability to restore liver cells and protect them from toxic damage. Fumarin is an extract of medicinal fume, which eliminates the increased tone of the sphincter of Oddi, stimulates the formation and excretion of bile. Gepabene capsules can be used by children from 6 years of age.

These are not all analogues that can replace Odeston tablets, but any medicine can be taken only after prior consultation with a doctor.
