Tantum Verde: instructions for using the spray and what it is needed for, price, reviews, analogues

Description and composition

The spray is a colorless transparent liquid that smells like mint.

As an active substance, the drug contains benzydamine hydrochloride, which contains 0.255 mg in 1 dosage.

As auxiliary components, the medicinal product contains:

  • 96% ethyl alcohol;
  • glycerol;
  • preservative E 218;
  • menthol flavor;
  • ortho-sulfobenzimide;
  • bicarbonate of soda;
  • twin 20;
  • purified water.

Pharmacological group

The active substance belongs to the group of indazoles, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for topical use. It relieves inflammation and pain and has an antiseptic effect.

The active substance stabilizes the cell membrane and blocks the production of prostaglandins, which are responsible for the development of inflammation and pain.

Benzidamine penetrates into the bacterial cell, disrupts metabolic processes and causes the death of the microorganism.

The drug has an antimycotic effect against fungi of the genus Candida. The active substance causes changes in their cell wall and, as a result, microorganisms cannot reproduce.

When used topically, the active substance is well absorbed through the mucous membranes and migrates to the site of inflammation. It is detected in the bloodstream in quantities that are insufficient to develop systemic effects. The drug is excreted primarily in the urine.

Expert opinion of the Polismed medical board

We have collected frequently asked questions and prepared answers to them

Tell me, which form of TANTUM VERDE is the most effective: spray, tablets, rinse solution?

Response from the Medical College

Tantum Verde is really quite effective for sore throat, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, etc. The dosage and permissible age of administration depend on the form in which it is produced.

Tantum Verde topical solution is used to gargle for sore throat in a dose of 1 tbsp. spoon. Frequency of application – every 3 hours. To prevent TV, use it daily as a gargle in a 1:1 ratio with water. It can be prescribed to children over 12 years of age and adults; it is not suitable for small children.

For children, use Tantum Verde in the form of a spray. It is allowed from 3 years of age; depending on age, it is necessary to do from 1 to 8 injections every 2-3 hours. 1 dose – 1 injection. If we are talking about treating a child, then the answer to the question of what is better: a solution or a TV spray is, of course, a spray.

Tantum Verde tablets and lozenges must be sucked and preferably for as long as possible. They can be prescribed to children from 3 years of age. To decide which is better - tablets or spray directly for the child - it is important to take into account his age. Not all children can suck on a lollipop for a long time without eating it right away, so for very young children a spray is still more preferable, because the active substance in it has a healing effect on the inflamed area itself.

Why should children not be given Tantum Verde? Is it true? We have been using it constantly since we were 2 years old for stomatitis in children, and it helps us well.

Response from the Medical College

It’s true, they don’t produce a special form of TV for children. In practice, pediatricians still use spray, lozenges or solution depending on the age of the child. For example, children under 2 years of age are prescribed a spray, which is injected in the dose recommended by the attending physician. For infants, newborns and children up to one year old, Tantum Verde is also prescribed in the form of a spray, but it is sprayed onto the pacifier. Irrigation of the oral cavity with a spray is prohibited in such children, because it can cause a reflex spasm and associated complications. Among analogues that are cheaper for children, we can recommend Lugol or Sebidin, but they can only be used after consultation with a doctor.

Tell me, is it allowed to use Tantum Verde during pregnancy (1st trimester)?

Response from the Medical College

The use of TV is not contraindicated during pregnancy. This means that the drug does not penetrate the placental barrier during pregnancy and does not affect the fetus. Therefore, if necessary, you can use lozenges or Tantum Verde spray during pregnancy. It can also be prescribed during lactation, because the drug does not pass into breast milk.

Tell us how to gargle TV correctly and how many times a day should you do it?

Response from the Medical College

To know how many days to take Tantum Verde for you, you should visit a doctor. On average, the course of treatment is no more than a week, and when asked how many days you can spray TV, the answer is no longer than 7 days.

To rinse, you need 15 ml of solution at a time. Usually 1-2 minutes are enough to rinse the mouth, after which the solution should be spat out. The procedure must be repeated quite often - every 2-3 hours.

Regarding the spray and where to spray TV and how much to spray: always irrigate a sore throat or mucous membrane of the mouth, gums, etc. The frequency of doses depends on the age of the patient.

How to properly store a TV after opening and for how long?

Response from the Medical College

Tantum Verde is a long-term storage product, which is important given its high cost. That is, you can store the TV after opening for a long time, namely until the expiration date indicated on the packaging, which is 4 years.

Tantum verde is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Used for topical use in the treatment of inflammatory and infectious diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx.

The presented drug is available in the form of lozenges. In pharmacies you can also buy a solution for gargling/gargling - a pleasant green color with a mint aroma. Tantum verde spray is the most popular - it is easy to use and has a localized effect.

All pharmacological forms contain a single active ingredient - benzydamine hydrochloride. The auxiliary ones include:

  • sodium bicarbonate;
  • polysorbate;
  • glycerol;
  • saccharin;
  • ethanol

Tantum verde is prescribed for the treatment of the following diseases:

  • stomatitis, gingivitis, periodontitis and in general any inflammatory processes of the oral cavity;

  • postoperative period in dental practice.

Lozenges - you need to dissolve one tablet of the presented medicine 3-4 times a day.

Solution – gargle 2-3 times a day. They also rinse the mouth to relieve pain.

Tantum verde spray – 4 doses (pressures) per dose 3 times a day.

Under no circumstances should you swallow the rinse solution. In the event of a fait accompli, you must quickly rinse your stomach (drink enough water to induce vomiting) and call a doctor.

Tantum verde for children should be given in a smaller dosage than for adults - your pediatrician will provide more accurate information. It is recommended that pediatric patients not prescribe the solution for gargling - there is a high risk of swallowing it.

Tantum verde for children is prescribed only in lozenges or sprays - the solution is prohibited for children under 12 years of age.

Contraindication (absolutely) is diagnosed phenylketonuria.

It has an anti-inflammatory effect, is perfectly absorbed by mucous surfaces, and acts purposefully - only in the place where it was applied.

If you take this drug for a long time, you should be aware of possible side effects:

  • dry mouth;
  • burning sensation in the area of application;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • insomnia.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages while using Tantum Verde is not prohibited.

No cases of overdose were recorded.

While carrying a child and breastfeeding, you can use the drug in question to treat inflammatory processes in the pharynx and oral cavity.

In pediatrics, Tantum verde is used only in the form of a spray or absorbable tablets.

Tantum verde is stored out of the reach of children for 2 years.

We have collected frequently asked questions and prepared answers to them

Tell me, in what form is it better to take TANTUM VERDE: tablets, spray or solution for topical use?

Response from the Medical College

What is better, solution or spray, tablets or spray, depends on the purpose for which the drug is prescribed.

TV rinse solution is used in the treatment of inflammation in the throat, namely sore throat, tonsillitis, pharyngitis. It is also used to prevent periodontal disease, infection of wounds in the mouth, etc. 3 mouth rinses per day are enough. When it is prescribed for treatment, it is used undiluted; in case of prevention, it is diluted with water 1:2 to reduce the concentration. A single dose of solution is 15 ml.

TV spray is also effective for sore throat. It is used every 2-3 hours. One dose is from 4 to 8 injections, depending on the doctor’s prescription. Children from 6 to 12 years old - no more than 4 injections at a time with 4 spray applications per day. For children aged 3 to 6, the frequency of use is the same; the dose is calculated based on the child’s weight - 1 dose per 4 kg of body weight.

Tantum Verde tablets should not be swallowed, but dissolved. They are prohibited from taking during pregnancy and in patients who suffer from phenylketonuria.

The instructions for Tantum Verde indicate that it can be used by children from 3 years of age. In practice, I know that pediatricians often prescribe it to children under 2 years of age and even newborns, for example, for stomatitis. Tell me, is it possible to give TV to children and at what age?

Response from the Medical College

There is no special form of the drug TV available for children, so doctors get out of the situation by prescribing adult forms, but in a smaller dosage. The product turned out to be quite effective, so it is safely used in the treatment of both infants and adults, and even children under one year old. In the latter case, for infants, the drug is applied to the mucous membrane of the cheek, but not to the throat or tonsils; you can also spray the pacifier and give it to the child. Treatment of TV must be accompanied by medical supervision.

My throat hurts very often. Tantum Verde helps me relieve pain and inflammation. I am now 20 weeks pregnant and yesterday my throat started hurting again. Can I take TV solution or spray during pregnancy?

Response from the Medical College

According to the annotation for the drug, its form in the form of a solution and spray is approved for use during pregnancy in the case of pharyngitis, tonsillitis and stomatitis. The active substance Tantum Verde is not able to penetrate the placental barrier. It is also allowed during lactation. The use and dosage of TV should be agreed with the attending physician. The tablet form of TV is prohibited during pregnancy.

I know from my own experience that Tantum Verde is very good for sore throats. But for how long and how many days is it allowed to take it in the form of a spray without harm to health? How to rinse and spray the drug correctly?

Response from the Medical College

It all depends on the prescription of your attending physician and the age of the patient. This product is available in several pharmacological forms, some of which have age restrictions, the same applies to the spray.

Spray Tantum Verde:

  • How much to spray: it can be used for children over 12 years of age, adults and pregnant women - it is used every 3-4 hours. How many days can you spray - no more than 5.
  • For children from 6 to 12 years old, the spray is also used every 3 hours. How many times a day - no more than 6, 2-4 injections.
  • Children under 6 years of age (from 3 years) are given an individual dose at the rate of 1 injection per 4 kg of weight. No more than 4 injections at a time.

Adults need to spray their throat with the spray. Children are allowed to apply it to the buccal mucosa to avoid reflex spasm when using the spray.

I often use Tantum Verde because I suffer from sore throats. Tell me, how long can a bottle of it be stored after opening? Will it deteriorate over time?

Response from the Medical College

This product has a decent shelf life, as for a drug in the middle price category. After opening a bottle or bottle of spray, it can be stored until the expiration date and it will not spoil.

The above information on the use of the drug is presented for informational purposes only and is intended for specialists . Tantum Verde is produced by the Italian company ACRAF in various versions - in the form of a solution, tablets and spray. For the treatment of inflammation of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, it is optimal to use the latter.

Consumers give good reviews of the drug, noting its effectiveness and the relative rarity of side effects. What does Tantum Verde help with, and how to use it correctly in accordance with the instructions?

Aerosol release form: 30 ml plastic bottles. The spray nozzle is equipped with a folding tube, with which it is convenient to spray the drug on the back wall of the throat, on the tonsils.

The active substance is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug - benzydamine.

Additionally, Tantum Verde includes:

  • medical alcohol;
  • glycerol;
  • soda;
  • water.

Auxiliary components include flavoring additives, aromatizers, and preservatives.

The aerosol bottle is equipped with a metering sprayer with a folding spray tube.

Apply the spray according to the following instructions:

  1. Place the spray wand in a horizontal position.
  2. If the bottle has not been used before, you should press the spray nozzle twice so that the medicine enters the spray bottle.
  3. Insert the spray tube into your mouth.
  4. Press the spray nozzle 4 times.
  5. Avoid drinking or eating for 30 minutes.

The instructions for use of the Tantum Verde spray do not contain a requirement to hold your breath while spraying the drug. However, you should not take a deep breath when spraying.

One press sprays 0.17 g of medication. This volume contains 0.255 mg of benzydamine. The 30 ml bottle holds 176 sprays.

The aerosol is used every 2-3 hours. The standard duration of treatment for acute respiratory infections is 5-7 days. One bottle will last approximately this number of days.

In accordance with the instructions for use, Tantum Verde spray is indicated for children. It should be borne in mind that the product can be sprayed directly onto the mucous membrane of the throat for a child starting from the age of 3.

Aerosol dosage for children over 3 years of age:

  • up to 6 years - 3 sprays at a time;
  • up to 12 years - 4 sprays at a time.

After use, the drug should be monitored to ensure that the child does not consume liquid or food for at least 30 minutes.

The frequency of spraying Tantum Verde for children is every 2-3 hours.

There are no drugs that are specifically targeted at young children. In most cases, manufacturers in the instructions for medications limit the age of use to 3 years at best. However, young children get sick even more often, and they also need to be treated with something.

On the other hand, the big question is how much anti-inflammatory spray is required to treat infants. Infection in the baby's respiratory tract spreads quickly: pharyngitis in the morning can turn into bronchitis in the evening. For bronchitis, it makes no sense to use Tantum Verde: antibiotics are required.

In addition, when talking about use in children, it should be borne in mind that the drug:

  • contains alcohol;
  • absorbed from the mucosa and metabolized in the body.

However, pediatricians, as practice shows, prescribe Tantum Verde to infants.

The above is also true for children 1-3 years old. Despite this, many mothers believe that Tantum Verde is safer than other throat antiseptics. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effect that benzydamine has makes the child feel better, which allows the drug to be characterized as effective.

You should be guided by the age-specific dosages specified in the instructions for use of the Tantum Verde spray:

  • up to 2 years - 1 spray;
  • up to 3 years - 2 sprays.

As a general rule, the aerosol should not be sprayed directly onto the child’s throat. Spraying is done on the tongue or on the inner surface of the cheek (“behind the cheek”).

Despite the fact that benzydamine is absorbed from the mucous membrane and undergoes further metabolism in the body, the instructions emphasize that the spray does not have a systemic effect on the body.

The drug is safe to use in any trimester of pregnancy.

Tantum Verde is allowed to be used during lactation. Benzydamine and its breakdown products are not infiltrated into breast milk.

It is advisable to use Tantum Verde for the following inflammations:

  • tonsils;
  • pharyngeal mucosa;
  • laryngeal mucosa;
  • oral mucosa (including fungal infectious diseases);
  • salivary glands;
  • periodontal tissue.

In addition, the drug is indicated in the following cases:

  • after surgical manipulations in the oral cavity;
  • after injuries (for example, microtrauma of soft tissues caused by teeth, crowns);
  • to reduce inflammation and prevent the development of infection after dental treatment.

In cases of severe infection, the spray is used as part of antibacterial and immunomodulatory therapy.

Tantum Verde for sore throat

Inflammation of the tonsils is indicated in the instructions for use of Tantum Verde spray as the main indication. Benzidamine penetrates into inflamed tissues, accordingly, disrupting metabolic processes in microbial cells not only on the mucous membrane, but also inside the tonsils.

Consumers give good reviews about Tantum Verde spray for sore throat. But they note that it should be used in combination with antibiotics.

The anti-inflammatory effect of benzydamine is effective against bacterial infections that affect the laryngeal mucosa. Penetrating into tissues, the active substance stabilizes cell membranes, stimulates healing processes, and relieves swelling of the larynx. Alcohol, which is a component of the medicine, provides an additional antibacterial effect.

As in the case of sore throat, for laryngitis the drug should be used as an auxiliary drug to complement antibiotic and/or antiviral therapy.

In the instructions for use of the Tantum Verde spray, as well as in reviews of the drug, it is noted that the product is best suited for the treatment of infectious inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa. Benzidamine is effective against various microorganisms, including Candida fungi. The analgesic effect of the drug will help you cope with sore throat and discomfort.

Glycerol, which is a component of the spray, forms a protective lash on the mucous membrane that prevents contact with microbes.

At the same time, the drug, due to its anti-inflammatory effect, can mask a viral infection. For this reason, it is advisable to start treatment with an antiviral drug and supplement its effect with benzydamine.

For infectious inflammation in the oral cavity, it is recommended to use Tantum Verde solution (rinse your mouth). The aerosol is used in cases where rinsing is physically impossible, for example:

  • for jaw injuries;
  • after oral surgery;
  • small children;
  • in other cases.

Inflammation of the oral mucosa - stomatitis - can be easily treated with a spray. Benzidamine relieves swelling of inflamed areas, disinfects wounds, and promotes faster healing. The same applies to inflammatory diseases affecting:

  • gums;
  • language;
  • salivary glands;
  • periodontal tissue.

Antiseptic aerosol helps with inflammation of the oral cavity caused by bacteria, as well as Candida fungus (candidiasis).

The duration of use of the drug in these cases is 10-20 days.

In accordance with the instructions for use, Tantum Verde spray can be used as an aseptic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent after surgical procedures, for example:

  • removal of a tooth;
  • root resection;
  • eliminating the consequences of injuries.

Under certain conditions (smoking, poor hygiene), microtrauma to the mucous membrane can lead to the development of infectious inflammation in the mouth. To prevent the development of an infectious process, it is recommended to use Tantum Verde.

The duration of postoperative or post-traumatic use is up to 7 days.

The Italian pharmaceutical company ACRAF produces solution, tablets and spray Forte under the trade name Tantum Verde.

Spray Forte is similar in composition to regular Tantum Verde, but has a higher concentration of benzydamine. One spray contains 0.51 mg of the substance instead of 0.255 mg in the usual one. For this reason, the instructions for Tantum Verde Forte spray specify that the drug is contraindicated in patients under 18 years of age.

The increased concentration of the active substance allows you to use the drug less often (2-6 times a day) with fewer sprays (2-4 at a time).

Forte is available in 15 ml bottles. It is enough for 88 sprays.

The spray is recommended for the following categories of patients:

  • for whom regular Tantum does not help effectively;
  • with severe inflammation;
  • for those who want to spray the drug less often.

According to the instructions, the Tantum Verde rinse solution is suitable for:

  • for the treatment of infectious inflammation;
  • for use for preventive and hygienic purposes.

Rinse with 15 ml of solution, which is measured using a special measuring cup (included). In case of an active inflammatory process, rinse the mouth with undiluted solution three times a day.

Contraindications for Tantum Verde solution include use of the product by children under 12 years of age: due to the large amount of benzydamine in one dose (22.5 mg).

Tantum Verde lozenges are a suitable remedy for the complex treatment of sore throats and infectious lesions of the oral mucosa. One tablet contains 3 mg of benzydamine. Dosage regimen: long-term resorption, 1 tablet three times a day.

Tantum Verde throat lozenges are contraindicated for children, who, not realizing the meaning of the process, may swallow the medicine.

The choice of tablets or spray is largely a matter of individual preference.

Several considerations can be made in favor of the tablet form of the drug:

  1. The tablets are suitable for those for whom it is difficult to spray an aerosol into the throat every 2-3 hours.
  2. The tablets do not contain alcohol, which is good, for example, for children.

At the same time, inflammation of the throat mucosa is more effectively treated with a spray. More frequent application of the drug more successfully copes with the infection, eliminates swelling and discomfort. In addition, treatment with an aerosol will be slightly cheaper than with tablets.

Exact analogs of Tantum Verde throat spray:

  • Oralcept (Macedonia);
  • Tenflex (Türkiye).

Both drugs are cheaper than the Italian drug. Oralcept - insignificant. Tenflex - by 20%.

Cheaper analogues of Tantum Verde for children are Oralcept and Tenflex. These drugs are identical in their composition and concentration of benzydamine.

Overdose

To date, there have not been any cases of overdose with Tantum Verde spray. If you use it according to the instructions, an overdose is unlikely.

If the drug is swallowed, the following symptoms of intoxication may occur:

  • vomit;
  • lack of coordination;
  • increased heart rate;
  • respiratory arrest;
  • abdominal cramps;
  • temperature increase;
  • fear;
  • excitement;
  • hallucinations;
  • convulsions.

These symptoms may occur when the drug is ingested at a dosage several times higher than the therapeutic dose. As a rule, they are observed in children.

There is no specific antidote. Treatment is aimed at eliminating signs of intoxication. The victim is prescribed gastric lavage and induction of vomiting. Medicines are prescribed to help support the functioning of vital organs.

Overdose

There was no information about overdosing with benzydamine in local congestion.

However, it is known that benzydamine, when taken internally in a large dose (which hundreds of times exceeds the possible doses of this medicinal form), especially in children, can cause anxiety, seizures, tremors, fatigue, hyperactivity sweating, ataxia, vomiting. Such a gastric overdose will require careful washing of the tube, treatment of water-electrolytic disturbances and symptomatic treatment, adequate hydration.

Analogs

A complete analogue of Tantum Verde spray is Oralcept. It is produced by the Republic of Macedonia. It can be used in children over 3 years of age in the same dosages as Tantum Verde spray. The main difference between the spray and Oralcept is that it can be used according to indications in pregnant and breastfeeding women, when the benefit to the woman is greater than the potential harm to the fetus.

The drug has similar indications, contraindications, adverse reactions and dosages.

Oralcept spray should be sprayed for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx for 4-15 days; after removal of the tonsils or jaw fracture, the course of therapy can vary from 4 to 7 days; for odonto-dental pathologies, the duration of use of the drug can be 6-25 days.

Other analogues:

  • Hexoral;
  • Inhalipt;
  • Furacilin rinse solution;
  • Grammidin tablets;
  • Septolete;
  • Strepsils lozenges;
  • Lysobacter.

You can purchase Tantum Verde spray without a prescription from a specialist, although you should not use it yourself, since the doctor can decide on the advisability of prescribing it.

Pharmacological authorities

Pharmacodynamics.

Benzidamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic and anti-exudative properties.

Clinical studies have shown that benzydamine is effective in relieving symptoms associated with localized pathological processes in the mouth and pharynx. In addition, benzydamine has a prophylactic and local analgesic effect on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity.

Pharmacokinetics.

The fact of absorption through the mucous membrane of the mouth and pharynx leads to the detection of extinct amounts of benzydamine in human blood plasma. Approximately 2 years after taking iceberry 3 mg, the maximum concentration of benzydamine in blood plasma becomes 37.8 ng/ml, and the AUC value is 367 ng/ml*year. However, these concentrations are too low to control systemic pharmacological effects.

Excretion occurs primarily in the form of inactive metabolites or conjugated compounds.

It has been shown that with local stagnation, benzydamine accumulates in scorched tissues, so that effective concentrations are achieved without allowing it to penetrate the epithelial lining.
