Lazolvan for inhalation instructions for use in a nebulizer

The drug Lazolvan is included in the group of potent mucolytics. The drug has a pronounced expectorant effect, which allows it to be used for respiratory pathologies occurring in the acute or chronic stage.

To treat respiratory tract defects, doctors often recommend Lazolvan for inhalation. Delivering medication using a nebulizer helps improve the patient's condition and speed up the healing process.

pharmachologic effect

The abstract indicates that the active component of ambroxol hydrochloride activates the secretion of mucus in the respiratory tract. This substance stimulates ciliary activity and also activates the process of synthesis of pulmonary surfactant. As a result of this action, there is an active secretion of mucus and its elimination (the so-called mucociliary clearance). Since the removal of mucus is facilitated, the frequency and intensity of coughing decreases.

It was noted that in people suffering from COPD, after long-term treatment with Lazolvan (for at least two months), the frequency of exacerbations, as well as their duration, significantly decreased. Thanks to this treatment, it was possible to reduce the duration of antibiotic treatment.

Composition of the drug

The main active ingredient of the medication in question is Ambroxol. In addition, the product contains the following auxiliary components:

  • sodium chloride;
  • monohydrate;
  • distilled water;
  • hydrogen phosphate

The main active substance enhances the production of secretions in the respiratory system. Due to this, the process of removing phlegm is accelerated, and the cough is converted into a productive one.

Long-term studies of the medication in question allowed scientists to prove that a course of treatment with Lazolvan helps reduce relapses in people suffering from COPD.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

Ambroxol is absorbed quickly and almost completely. In this case, there is a linear dependence on the dose taken. When taking a dose orally, the maximum concentration is observed after 1-2.5 hours. Approximately 90% protein bound. When taken orally, ambroxol quickly passes from the blood into the tissues in the body. At the same time, the highest concentration of the active component of the substance was observed in the lungs.

About 30% of an orally administered dose of the drug is subject to the “first pass” effect through the liver. Metabolism of the remainder of ambroxol occurs in the liver, mainly by glucuronidation and partial breakdown of the substance to dibromoantranilic acid and additional metabolites .

The half-life of ambroxol is approximately 10 hours.

Pharmacokinetics are not affected by the patient's age and gender.

Action of Lazolvan drops

The medication belongs to the group of mucolytic, expectorant drugs. Ambroxol hydrochloride increases the rate of secretion into the respiratory tract. Stimulates ciliary activity, the production of surfactant - it is a complex of surfactants that cover the inner surface of the pulmonary alveoli.

Due to these actions, mucociliary clearance is improved - a system that protects the mucous membranes of the respiratory system from infectious agents and irritants. The sputum thins, its elimination accelerates, the cough decreases, and the cough becomes easier.

When taking the drug for about 2 months for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the frequency of exacerbations is significantly reduced.

Interaction

Provided that Lazolvan solution for oral administration and inhalation and other forms of drugs are combined with antibiotics ( Cefuroxime , Amoxicillin , Doxycycline , Erythromycin ), then the concentration of antibacterial drugs in the lung tissues increases.

With the simultaneous use of Lazolvan and other cough medications, there may be difficulty in the process of sputum discharge due to a decrease in cough.

special instructions

The solution contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride. It should be borne in mind that this substance can provoke bronchospasm in people who have been diagnosed with increased reactivity of the respiratory tract.

The syrup contains sorbitol, so when taking this product, a mild laxative effect may be observed.

People who have fructose intolerance should not take the drug.

Those who adhere to a diet with a reduced sodium content should take into account that the Lazolvan solution contains 42.8 mg of sodium (in a dose of 12 ml).

There is no data on the effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles or operate precision machinery.

Before using the drug for children, you should visit a doctor who will tell you in detail how to take the solution or other forms of medication, for what cough, and according to what scheme to use the drug. Inhalations with Lazolvan and saline solution are carried out only on the recommendation of a doctor.

How to dilute Lazolvan for inhalation

To prepare a solution for inhalation with Lazolvan, it is diluted with saline solution (sodium chloride 0.9%) in a 1:1 ratio; it is not recommended to use water.

With saline solution

Inhalation of Lazolvan with saline solution helps to simultaneously reduce the risk of bronchospasm in response to the influx of aerosol, as well as additionally moisturize the mucous membrane. This helps make coughing easier and improves mucus movement.

Lazolvan and sodium chloride: proportions

For inhalation, you need a sodium chloride solution in equal proportions with Lazolvan. They must be strictly dosed in volume. To do this, use a syringe or measuring cup, which is attached to the bottle of medication.

With water

It is not recommended to carry out inhalation therapy with ordinary, boiled or distilled water. A negative effect occurs when combined with an alkaline solution (for example, mineral waters such as “Borjomi”). In this case, the active substance precipitates and does not have a therapeutic effect.

When choosing an analogue for children and adults, you should definitely take into account the doctor’s recommendations. Analogs of this drug for the active substance are the drugs Ambroxol , Ambrobene , Medox , Ambrohexal , Halixol , Flavamed , Lazolvan Uno , etc.

Lazolvan or Ambrobene - which is better?

The drug Ambrobene also contains the active component ambroxol hydrochloride and is used in case of wet cough. These drugs are produced by different manufacturers. Compared to Lazolvan, Ambrobene has more contraindications and causes more side effects.

ACC or Lazolvan - which is better?

The active component of the drug ACC is the substance acetylcysteine. This drug reduces the viscosity of mucus, facilitates the process of sputum discharge, and is active if there is purulent sputum. The drug ACC has more indications for use, but it is not prescribed for the treatment of children under 2 years of age. Which of the two drugs to choose can only be determined by a doctor individually.

Which is better: Bromhexine or Lazolvan?

Bromhexine , like Lazolvan, thins sputum without blocking the cough reflex. The active substance is bromhexine hydrochloride. Used for diseases of the lungs and bronchi. The drug is not prescribed to children under two years of age. Thus, both drugs act similarly; the doctor determines which one to prescribe individually.

Which is better: Lazolvan or Ascoril?

Ascoril is a combined drug that has a mucolytic, bronchodilator and expectorant effect. Compared to Lazolvan, Ascoril has more contraindications. Despite the fact that they are prescribed for similar diseases, Ascoril is prescribed during the period of dry cough, and Lazolvan can be taken at any stage of the disease.

Which is better - Lazolvan or Erespal?

The active ingredient of the drug Erespal is fenspiride . This drug reduces the intensity of inflammatory processes, while Lazolvan stimulates the thinning of sputum. Which drug to choose, and whether Erespal and Lazolvan can be taken at the same time, is determined individually by a specialist.

Syrup 30 mg/5 ml

Cough is one of the most common complaints with which people consult a doctor.1 It can be a symptom of a number of diseases and conditions that require medications that affect the viscosity of sputum and have an expectorant effect. And one of the frequently used mucolytic agents in Russia is Lazolvan®, used in adults and children.2 It is available in various forms, including syrup with a dosage of 30 mg/5 ml, intended for use in adult practice.

Use during pregnancy

The active ingredient of Lazolvan® syrup, ambroxol, penetrates the hematoplacental barrier, which separates the blood circulation of the mother and fetus. Consequently, when a woman takes the drug, it enters the child’s blood. The experience of using the drug in pregnant women after 28 weeks is quite extensive. Both clinical practice data and the results of animal studies have not demonstrated any undesirable effects of Lazolvan® on the health of the growing fetus, the course of pregnancy, childbirth, or the condition of the child after birth. In addition, the use of ambroxol in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy (after 28 weeks) has been deeply studied. The research results confirmed that ambraxol does not have a negative effect on the fetus.3

However, when prescribing medication to expectant mothers, a healthcare professional takes into account several factors and carefully weighs the balance between the benefit to the woman and the risk to the developing fetus.3, 4 Special precautions when using medications are observed during critical periods of pregnancy, in particular before 12 weeks, when all the organs and systems of the unborn child are formed. Therefore, it is not recommended to take Lazolvan® syrup in the first trimester.3, 5 But in the second and third trimesters, a cough drug based on ambroxol can be prescribed after a thorough assessment of the potential benefit to the mother and the possible risk to the fetus.4

When breastfeeding

Many medications are excreted in breast milk and, accordingly, enter the baby’s body with it. The concentration of the active substance in the baby’s blood depends on various factors, including the duration of feeding, the volume of milk the child received, and the child’s body’s ability to eliminate the drug. Because a breastfed baby's digestive system is immature, the half-life of drugs in the baby's body may be much longer than in the mother's body.5

Medicines that pass into breast milk include Lazolvan® syrup. Despite the fact that in therapeutic doses it did not have a negative effect on the child, it is not recommended to be taken during breastfeeding. Moreover, lactation, according to the instructions for use, is a contraindication to the use of Lazolvan® syrup.3

If kidney function is impaired

In kidney disease, the elimination of drugs is impaired. As a rule, this takes much longer than usual. In this regard, medications for impaired renal function are prescribed very carefully. Before recommending a drug, a healthcare professional will consider possible changes in the rate of elimination, taking into account a number of factors, including what drug is being prescribed, the severity of the kidney problem in a particular case, and so on. Only after a thorough assessment does a healthcare professional decide to prescribe the medication and adjust the dosage individually.6

For liver disorders

One of the main functions of the liver is the breakdown of substances entering the body, including medications. When a person is healthy, this process occurs harmoniously and efficiently. However, in some cases, when liver function is impaired, medications that are not normally harmful to humans can become toxic. Particular care must be taken in severe liver disease such as cirrhosis.7

The active ingredient of Lazolvan® syrup, ambroxol, like other drugs, is metabolized in the liver. Therefore, if its operation is disrupted, it is necessary to take the medicine with caution, as indicated in the instructions for use, and as prescribed by a healthcare professional.3

Active substance

The active substance of the drug Lazolvan® syrup is ambroxol hydrochloride. It helps to enhance the transport of sputum, improve its discharge and relieve cough.

The dosage of the active substance (ambroxol) is 30 mg in 5 ml of syrup, which is a clear viscous liquid with a pleasant strawberry aroma.3

Lazolvan for children

Reviews indicate that this drug promotes rapid sputum discharge in children. At the same time, it is important that the instructions for syrup for children, as well as for other forms of drugs, are strictly followed. Lozenges are not used for children under 6 years of age, tablets - for people under 18 years of age. Lazolvan for children under one year of age can only be used under the constant supervision of a doctor in the form of a solution.

Inhalations are carried out according to the instructions, using any device. The solution is suitable for a nebulizer. Before starting the procedure, you should read the instructions on how to do inhalations with Lazolvan through a nebulizer for a dry cough in a child in order to do inhalations correctly.

How to do inhalation with Lazolvan

For a dry cough, it is important to inhale Lazolvan without using cough suppressants. For patients with bronchial asthma, a combination with bronchodilators is recommended. Chronic bronchitis is treated for a long time. For pregnant women, the medication is allowed from the second trimester strictly as prescribed by the doctor.

For dry cough

For a dry cough, the usual dose of the drug is prescribed; it, along with saline solution, is poured into the nebulizer container. Drugs that suppress the cough reflex (Libexin, Stoptussin) should not be used simultaneously with Lazolvan. This leads to stagnation of sputum and impairs the process of cleansing the bronchi.

For asthma, dosage

The dosage of Lazolvan for bronchial asthma depends on whether it is used alone or in combination with bronchodilator medications. For example, for combined inhalation, take 2 ml of solutions: Lazolvan, physiological, Berodual.

An option is possible when the patient first uses the drug recommended for dilation of the bronchi (Salbutamol, Astmopent, Berotek and others), and after a few minutes inhales Lazolvan aerosols. If you skip this preparatory stage, then asthmatics often experience an attack of suffocation at the very beginning of the procedure.

For bronchitis

Lazolvan is effective for acute and chronic bronchitis; the dose and number of procedures per day do not differ from the standard regimen. To relieve an acute inflammatory process, 7-10 procedures may be sufficient, and for chronic, often recurrent damage to the bronchi, treatment for 2 months is often recommended.

During pregnancy

It has been proven that during pregnancy Lazolvan penetrates the placenta. Although there is no reliable evidence of impaired fetal development, its use in the first trimester poses a potential risk. After the third month, the drug is used only if the preservation of the mother’s health depends on it. Self-medication is strictly prohibited. After childbirth during lactation, it also cannot be recommended, since its presence in breast milk has been detected.
