What kind of cough do Codelac Broncho tablets and elixir help with?
The effect of both dosage forms of the drug is similar. These are mucolytics with a moderate anti-inflammatory effect. Designed to liquefy mucous secretions, improve the passage of accumulated clots from the bronchi and lungs. Increases cough productivity and helps cleanse the respiratory system.
Ambroxol in combination with thermopsis extract reduces the viscosity of mucus, stimulating its elimination. Sodium bicarbonate improves the motility of bronchioles and epithelial villi on the walls of the bronchi. Glycyrrhizinate has an antimicrobial effect and neutralizes the damaging effects of oxidation products. Thyme complements the activity of other components of the elixir, helps to expectorate mucus more easily, helps relieve microspasms and makes breathing easier.
Positive dynamics are usually observed from the second day of therapy. The effect of the medicine increases gradually: the cough becomes less intrusive, the mucus leaves in a larger volume, and relief comes faster.
pharmachologic effect
The medicine is intended to treat cough symptoms of any origin. It has a pronounced expectorant and mucolytic effect, and a weak anti-inflammatory effect.
Thanks to the main substances in the composition, the drug promotes the dilution of bronchial secretions and its good discharge.
Due to glycyrrate, there is a decrease in the inflammatory process, the fight against viral agents, and antioxidant properties.
Thermopsis extract stimulates expectoration of sputum, normalizing the secretion in the bronchopulmonary system due to some irritation of the gastric mucosa.
Sodium bicarbonate has an alkaline effect, reduces the viscosity of mucus and stimulates the motility of the epithelial tissue of the bronchopulmonary apparatus.
Thyme plant extract contains a number of essential oils, which contributes to an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect.
The pharmacological activity of the drug is aimed at suppressing dry cough, wheezing in the lungs and respiratory failure. In addition, Codelac Broncho reduces the time of intoxication and helps to quickly relieve a runny nose.
Codelac Broncho: instructions for use
CODELAC® BRONCHO is a series of specialized medications intended for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases, incl. colds, accompanied by a cough with difficult sputum discharge. This cough is often called “wet” or “productive.”
Where can I buy
A distinctive feature of the KODELAK® BRONXO series drugs is a unique combined composition that has no analogues in Russia1.
Thanks to the combined composition, CODELAC® BRONCHO preparations provide a comprehensive therapeutic effect for wet coughs with sputum (“productive” and “unproductive”), helping to shorten the cough period and resolve the cough.
Where can I buy
The combination of ingredients in the antitussive drugs KODELAK® BRONCHO successfully combines both the developments of modern pharmacology and the centuries-old traditions of traditional medicine, based on knowledge of the healing properties of medicinal herbs and plants. In addition to medically synthesized molecules, CODELAC® BRONCHO preparations contain natural plant components:
- thermopsis extract – in KODELAK® BRONCHO tablets;
- thyme herb extract – as part of the elixir KODELAK® BRONCHO with thyme;
- licorice root extract (glycyrrate and its salts) - in both preparations - tablets and elixir.
The very idea of herbal medicine is widely supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Based on an analysis of vast global experience, WHO recognized the need for the rapid integration of traditional medicine methods into the health care system of all countries2.
The effect of CODELAC® BRONCHO preparations is due to the pharmacological properties of their constituent components. The action of all components is aimed at mutually enhancing the properties of each of them.
X
AMBROXOL: thins mucus, reduces viscosity and promotes its removal from the bronchi.
Today, ambroxol is the most popular and sought-after molecule in Russia for the treatment of wet cough3. Among other things, ambroxol is also one of the most widely studied cough remedies. The international database of specialized medical publications Pubmed contains more than 700 studies using ambroxol. X
GLYCIRRATE (glycyrrhizic acid and its salts): has anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects;
has a corticosteroid-like effect, helps reduce the inflammatory process in the respiratory tract, including the bronchi. Additionally, it has a moderate protective effect on cells (=cytoprotection), due to its antioxidant and membrane-stabilizing activity. X
SODIUM HYDROCARBONATE: reduces the viscosity of sputum, stimulates its excretion by enhancing the motor function of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi and bronchioles.
X
THYME HERB EXTRACT: has an expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect, has a healing effect on the mucous membrane damaged by the action of microbes and cough impulses.
WHO experts, the European Commission, as well as the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) give a positive assessment to medications containing thyme (thyme) and approve their use, for example, for acute and chronic bronchitis, including in children .4.5 X
THERMOPSIS EXTRACT: has an expectorant effect, helps thin mucus by enhancing additional secretion of the bronchial glands.
When taking drugs containing thermopsis, both bronchial secretion and the initial parts of the cough reflex are stimulated (the frequency and intensity of cough increases). Slight differences in the compositions of KODELAK® BRONCHO tablets and KODELAK® BRONXO elixir with thyme are due to the technology of their industrial production.
The combined composition and complex action of KODELAK® BRONCHO preparations is aimed at all the main factors that predetermine the appearance of a wet cough during a cold:
1. against viruses and germs:
- antiviral properties are due to the presence of glycyrrhizic acid in the composition; its activity against a number of viruses has been demonstrated in vitro, as well as in an in vivo model of influenza6,7
- antimicrobial properties are due to thyme - the flavonoids thymol and carvacrol contained in it have a bactericidal effect on coccal pathogenic flora, a bacteriostatic effect on gram-negative microorganisms, as well as high antimycotic activity against pathogenic fungi8.
2. against inflammation in the bronchi:
- help reduce inflammation in the walls of the bronchi;
- favor the restoration and healing of mucous membranes damaged by microbes, inflammation and intense coughing attacks.
3. against phlegm:
- reduce the viscosity of thick sputum, diluting it, changing rheological properties and improving glide;
- promote the removal of phlegm from the lungs and bronchi, stimulating the evacuation function of the ciliated epithelium;
- create conditions for the release of phlegm from even the smallest and narrowest bronchi, thanks to a moderate antispasmodic effect.
The complex therapeutic effect due to the combined composition is a distinctive feature of the CODELAC® BRONCHO series of drugs. This fundamentally distinguishes CODELAC® BRONCHO preparations from single-component drugs based on ambroxol and/or acetylcysteine, which are well known and widely used in the treatment of wet cough due to advertising.
In particular, the advantage of CODELAC® BRONCHO for cough with sputum in comparison with monocomponent ambroxol preparations is confirmed by the results of observational clinical studies:
- KODELAK® BRONCHO acts 2 times more powerfully, significantly improving sputum discharge and more significantly reducing the severity of cough9;
- KODELAK® BRONCHO quickly converts a non-productive cough into a productive one, while taking it, a shorter duration of the cough period was noted10-11;
- CODELAC® BRONCHO helps to significantly reduce the severity of bronchial inflammation in the lungs11;
- CODELAC® BRONCHO has a higher subjective assessment from patients who were treated for cough10-11.

Codelac tablets should not be taken together with expectorants and mucolytic drugs.
Long-term treatment with high doses can lead to drug dependence.
It must be borne in mind that Codelac is a doping drug, since it contains codeine.
Due to the likelihood of sedation, during therapy it is not recommended to engage in types of work that require quick psychomotor reactions and increased attention.
Reviews about Codelac
According to reviews, Codelac is a fairly effective medicine. Those who have previously used various cough tablets note that the drug works better and faster, alleviating the patient’s condition. Many mothers say that Codelac is well tolerated by children, having a gentle effect on a fragile body and quickly calming a cough. It also has a sedative effect, which allows mothers to rest and a tired child to sleep better at night. However, the drug should be taken only for dry cough.
What is better Lazolvan or Codelac broncho for children
Lazolvan contains ambroxol as a therapeutic component. The medicine is available in the form of syrup, solution for oral administration and inhalation, tablets for oral administration, lozenges for resorption. Such a variety of dosage forms allows you to choose the most optimal one. For example, if a child has difficulty swallowing, then from the age of 6 he can dissolve Lazolvan lozenges. In a suitable dosage form, the drug is approved from birth. Lazolvan can be taken by patients with bronchial asthma if the disease is accompanied by difficult to separate sputum. It is impossible to say clearly which drug is better, since each of them has contraindications and can provoke allergies.
Drug interactions
With the simultaneous use of certain drugs, the following effects may develop:
- Chloramphenicol: enhances the effect of codeine;
- Sleeping pills, antipsychotics, antihistamines, sedatives, centrally acting analgesics, anxiolytics: increased depression of the respiratory center and sedative effect (the combination is not recommended);
- Cardiac glycosides (including digoxin): enhancing their action;
- Adsorbents, coatings and astringents: decreased absorption of codeine.
Compound
The composition includes a certain complex of substances, among which the main components are the following:
Composition of one tablet Codelac broncho
Sodium bicarbonate | 200 mg |
Sodium glycyrrhizinate | 30 mg |
Ambroxol hydrochloride | 20 mg |
Thermopsis dry extract | 10 mg |
In addition to the above components, tablets contain:
Photo: Tablets Codelac Broncho
microcrystalline cellulose;- potato starch;

- sodium carboxymethyl starch;
- stearic acid.
Speaking about Codelac Broncho syrup, the main components in its composition are:
Composition of 5 ml of Codelac Broncho syrup
Ambroxol hydrochloride | 0.01 g |
Sodium glycyrrhizinate | 0.03 g |
Liquid thyme extract | 500 mg |
The following are used as auxiliary components:
- nipazole;
- sorbitol;
- nipagin;
- purified water.
The effectiveness of the drug is achieved due to the properties of the main active components:
Photo: Thermopsis grass
- Ambroxol is a component that is responsible for liquefying and removing mucus.
- Thermopsis grass - contains special alkaloid substances. They improve the functioning of the bronchial glands and speed up expectoration.
- Sodium glycyrate - relieves inflammation and is an excellent antiseptic. Excellent suppression of viruses.
- Sodium bicarbonate - reduces the viscosity of sputum, improving its discharge.
Another advantage of the drug is that it directly affects the central nervous system of a sick person. The complex of components contained in the product perfectly suppresses the inflammatory process. This prevents bacteria and viruses from spreading.
Codelac Broncho does not contain dangerous components or substances that contribute to addiction. Therefore, it actually has no contraindications and is indicated for use by people of different age groups and with different health indicators.
What is more effective: Ascoril or Codelac broncho
Ascoril is available in tablets and syrup, which contain salbutamol, bromhexine and guaifenesin as medicinal components. It dilates the bronchi and promotes the removal of mucus. In syrup, the medicine is allowed for children from birth, in tablets from 6 years. It has a wider range of uses. Ascoril can be taken for bronchial asthma, whooping cough, and tuberculosis. But this does not mean that it is better, since it has quite a lot of contraindications and unwanted effects.
It is permissible to use Broncho analogues instead of Codelac only after consultation with a pediatrician, since each of them has its own limitations and negative effects.
In addition, Codelac and Codelac Neo are available for sale.
What is better ACC for children or Codelac broncho
ACC is a mucolytic drug. The therapeutic effect of it is explained by acetylcysteine. The drug comes in granules for preparing a solution or syrup for oral administration, or soluble tablets. ACC should not be given to children under 2 years of age. The medication is used not only for diseases of the respiratory system, accompanied by the appearance of thick, difficult to separate sputum, but also for inflammation of the middle ear and paranasal sinuses. It is impossible to say that it is better, since both medications have contraindications and undesirable effects may occur while taking them.
Dosage forms of the drug
In pharmacies you can buy two varieties of Codelac Broncho:
- Tablets are a form of the drug aimed at teenagers and adults.
- In syrup - a form of the drug aimed at children.
Photo: Codelac broncho in tablets and syrup
Each type of drug has the same indications - it facilitates coughing and helps eliminate phlegm. However, you should be careful when purchasing, as the product has some nuances in use.
Codelac Broncho in the form of tablets are small, light cream-colored tablets with a flat-cylindrical shape. Tablets are packaged in 10 pieces per package. If the symptoms do not disappear during the treatment indicated by the doctor, then it is necessary to consult a doctor and continue taking the drug until the desired results are achieved.
Codelac Broncho Syrup is a thick liquid that is brown in color. The drug has a rather specific smell and taste. A measuring spoon is included.
Description of the medication
Codelac Broncho is produced in tablets. They are flat-cylindrical in shape, they have a chamfer and a risk. Their color can vary from pale cream to cream with a yellow tint. Lighter or darker inclusions can be seen on the surface of the tablets.
The therapeutic effect of the tablets is explained by the following active ingredients:
- ambroxol;
- sodium bicarbonate and glycyrrhizinate;
- thermopsis extract.
In addition to them, the tablets contain the following additional ingredients:
- MCC;
- E553b;
- E1422;
- plasdon K-25;
- E570;
- E466.
In addition to tablets, Codelac Broncho elixir with thyme is available for sale; some parents mistakenly call it syrup. It is a liquid color that can vary from pale brown to brown. During storage, sedimentation is allowed.
The elixir contains as medicinal components:
- ambroxol;
- thyme extract;
- sodium glycyrrhizinate.
The elixir contains the following auxiliary ingredients:
- E216;
- E218;
- E420;
- water.
Codelac Broncho is not available separately for children and adults; the dosage simply changes depending on the age of the patient.
The therapeutic effect of the drug is explained by its composition:
- Ambroxol stimulates expectoration, thins mucus, which facilitates its removal from the respiratory tract
- Sodium glycyrrhizinate is active against viruses. It stops the inflammatory process in the respiratory tract, protects tissues from the harmful effects of free radicals. Sodium glycyrrhizinate enhances the anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effects of steroid hormones produced in the body.
- Thermopsis increases the secretion of secretions by the bronchial glands, enhances the motor activity of the ciliated epithelium, as a result, sputum is evacuated out faster.
- Sodium bicarbonate reduces the viscosity of bronchial secretions and activates the motor function of the ciliated epithelium and bronchioles. Thanks to this, sputum comes out easier and faster.
- The active components of thyme relieve spasms and inflammation, have an expectorant effect, and accelerate the healing of damaged tissues.
Storage conditions and periods
Codelac Broncho can be stored according to the instructions for use for no more than 2 years after the start of use. The ideal room for storing syrup is dark, with a temperature range of 15-25 degrees Celsius. During long-term storage of the drug, a light sediment may form at the bottom of the bottle. Speaking of tablets, the period until which the drug can be used is indicated on the pack, as well as on each currency separately.
The drug should not be kept in the refrigerator, as this can easily affect its specific properties. Also, during long-term storage of Codelac syrup, a light coating may form on the neck and walls of the bottle.
