Gel for gums Metrogyl Denta - instructions for use, contraindications, composition and price

From this article you will learn:

  • analysis of the composition of Metrogil-dent, analogues,
  • application diagram and its features,
  • reviews of Metrogyl denta gel, price 2021.

The article was written by a dentist with more than 19 years of experience.

Metrogyl denta is a dental preparation in the form of a gel that has antibacterial and antiseptic effects. Its active gel components are the antibiotic metronidazole and the antiseptic chlorhexidine. Most often, the gel is used for application to the oral mucosa for inflammatory gum diseases - gingivitis and periodontitis.

The previous instructions for use of Metrogyl-Dent allowed the use of the drug starting from 6 years of age. However, in the new version of the instructions for 2021, the gel is recommended for use only from 18 years of age, despite the exact same composition and the still rather low concentration of active components. At the same time, similar Russian-made gels (with exactly the same composition) are for some reason allowed specifically from the age of 6.

Below you can find a list of optimal indications for the use of the gel. The author of the article is a practicing periodontist, and in our opinion, with many other indications prescribed in the original instructions, you will not get a good result from using Metrogil-dent. In this article we will tell you in which cases Metrogil-denta is a good choice, and in which it is better to choose other products.

Optimal indications for use:

  • with gingivitis,
  • with periodontitis,
  • in case of inflammation of the mucous membrane under the prosthesis,
  • with alveolitis of the socket of an extracted tooth.

For example, in case of inflammation of the mucous membrane under a denture, the drug will only work if we are talking about bacterial denture stomatitis.
And if inflammation of the mucous membrane is a toxic reaction to an excess of monomer in the plastic of the denture, Metrogil-dent will not help you. Also, it will not help with either periodontitis or periodontal abscess (also listed in the official instructions). As for the inflammation of the hood above the wisdom tooth, although it is possible to use this gel here, it is still inappropriate. Inflammation of the hood develops due to the accumulation of pathogenic bacteria between the hood and the chewing surface of the crown of the erupting wisdom tooth. At the same time, the components of Metrogyl dent work only superficially, without penetrating deep into the mucous membrane, and therefore they will not reach the source of infection if you simply apply the gel over the hood.

Important: below, in the “Reviews” section, we will analyze in detail the optimal indications for using the drug, describe treatment regimens, and also tell you how to apply the drug correctly so that it is not immediately washed off by saliva from the moist mucous membrane of the oral cavity.

pharmachologic effect

Metrogyl Denta gel is an antimicrobial drug; its effect is due to two antibacterial components.

The substance metronidazole produces an antibacterial effect against anaerobic bacteria that provoke the development of periodontal diseases. These are Fusobacterium fusiformis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Wolinella recta, Prevotella intermedia, Eikenella corrodens, Selenomonas spp., Borrelia vincenti.

The substance chlorhexidine produces an antimicrobial and antiseptic effect. Acts on gram-positive and gram-negative anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. Some strains of Proteus spp., Pseudomonas spp. demonstrate weak sensitivity to chlorhexidine. Bacterial spores and acid-resistant forms of bacteria are resistant to the substance. When using chlorhexidine, the functional activity of lactobacilli is not impaired.

About the drug

Metrogyl Dent is produced in the form of a gel. It is soft in consistency. The color is white or, one might say, close to white. Its release form is different and differs in weight. Available in plastic tubes weighing 5 g, 10 g and 20 g.

The drug is produced by a large company that has its offices in almost all countries. The release of all products is controlled using GMP rules. Their requirements are based on the implementation of quality control of their products at all levels of their production.

When purchasing Metrogyl Dent at a pharmacy, pharmacists will not require a prescription from a doctor. Store at an air temperature of less than 25°C and for no more than three years.

Gel Metrogyl Denta, instructions for use (Method and dosage)

The official instructions for use of Metrogyl Denta indicate that the gel is intended exclusively for use in dentistry.

In case of inflammation of the gums, children over 6 years of age and adults should apply the product to the gums with a finger or a cotton swab; the layer should be thin. The product must be applied twice a day. It is not advisable to wash off the product. After the procedure, you should not eat or drink for half an hour. Treatment lasts from 7 to 10 days.

Patients with periodontitis need to treat periodontal pockets with gel, and also apply the gel to the gums after dental plaque has been removed. The first time the procedure is usually performed by a doctor, then the patient applies the gel independently. The ointment should be applied 2 times from 7 to 10 days.

For people with aphthous stomatitis, the gel should be applied to the affected mucosa twice a day for 7 to 10 days.

To prevent exacerbation of chronic periodontitis and gingivitis , Metrogyl Denta should be applied to the gums 2 times a day for 7-10 days. It is advisable to practice such courses 2-3 times a year.

To prevent post-extraction alveolitis after the patient has had a tooth removed, the hole is treated with ointment immediately after removal, then the drug is used 2-3 times a day for another 7-10 days.

Metrogyl denta during pregnancy and lactation -

In the previous version of the instructions for Metrogyl-Dent gel, it was contraindicated for use only during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. In the current version of the instructions, this gel is not recommended for use throughout pregnancy, however, pregnancy and lactation are not contraindications for the use of the drug. Thus, Metrogyl denta can still be used during pregnancy, but only in consultation with your doctor.

As for breastfeeding, the manufacturer recommends that you stop breastfeeding while taking a course of this drug. An interesting point is that if you compare this information with the recommendations of the FDA (U.S. Drug Administration), then according to their recommendations, metronidazole can be taken by pregnant women and is also safe during breastfeeding. This is such a dissonance...

Important: at the same time, if you take a complete analogue of the Metrogil-dent gel - the Russian gel "Dentamet", then for some reason it is allowed for children from 6 years of age, and is also allowed for pregnant women (with the exception of the 1st trimester). One gets the feeling about unfair competition and preferences for Russian manufacturers.

Alternatives during pregnancy and breastfeeding - an alternative can be the drug Cholisal, which, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, can be taken throughout pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding, but “with caution.” The term “with caution” means that you should not take the drug unsupervised - it should be prescribed by your dentist, and you should also inform your obstetrician-gynecologist about its prescription.

Contraindications for use –

  • children under 18 years of age,
  • allergic reactions to the components of the gel,
  • blood diseases,
  • diseases of the nervous system.

Interaction

If the gel is applied topically in the doses indicated in the instructions, it almost does not interact with other drugs.

But it is still not recommended to use the gel with certain medications. Thus, it should not be used with coumarin anticoagulants , as the blood clotting time increases. When used simultaneously with Disulfiram, the level of toxicity of both drugs increases. When used simultaneously with Phenobarbital and phenytoin, the effectiveness of metronidazole decreases.

Compound

  • Metronidazole benzoate. This is a special antibacterial component. It has the ability to quickly penetrate saliva, thereby creating a fairly high bactericidal effect in the oral cavity. One gram of gel contains 16 mg of metronidazole benzoate.
  • Chlorhexidine bigluconate (20% solution). This is a special antiseptic component. It helps fight various types of protozoa, bacteria and herpes viruses. In addition, it shows its activity against purulent discharge. One gram of Metrogyl Denta gel contains 2.5 mg of chlorhexidine bigluconate.
  • Excipients. These substances include: water, carbomer-940, sodium hydroxide, levomenthol, propylene glycol.

Advantages and disadvantages

Metrogyl Denta is especially valuable because it is the first dental gel that appeared in our country. It can be purchased at any pharmacy. The gel has its positive and negative sides.

Advantages:

  • Good fixation on the mucous membrane.
  • Affordable price.
  • Has good antimicrobial activity.

Flaws:

  • Does not provide analgesic effect.
  • Medicinal components are contained in very small doses. That is why the use of the drug is not controlled, and it is freely available without a prescription. This product cannot cause any harm. And that's why it's less effective.

The main components of the gel do not fight inflammation. Metrogyl Denta acts only on pathogenic bacteria, but cannot block inflammation in the tissue. Therefore, when treating gums, it is best to give preference to drugs with combined action.

Application benefits

Despite the rather low concentration of active substances and the lack of analgesic effect, Metrogyl Denta gel has a number of advantages over more modern drugs used in medicine, for example:

  • the drug is perfectly fixed on the mucous membranes;
  • has a fairly high efficiency,
  • In addition, its affordable cost allows you to regularly use this product for preventive purposes.

The active components of the drug allow you to influence pathogenic microorganisms, but are not able to block mediators of inflammatory processes in tissues, therefore, in the treatment of many diseases, experts recommend combined procedures to achieve a more effective result.

Other Applications

As reviews show, Metrogyl also allows you to cope with the following problems:

  • Seborrhea.
  • Acne.
  • Trophic ulcer (only in complex treatment).
  • Eczema.
  • Bedsores.
  • Hard-to-heal wounds.

To treat the diseases described, it is necessary to apply the gel to the affected area twice a day. The course here differs in duration from gum treatment. It ranges from three to ten weeks. Treatment time depends on the severity of the lesion.

In addition, doctors recommend keeping Metrogyl in your home medicine cabinet. With its help, you can relieve the unpleasant symptoms of a burn to the palate in the oral cavity.
