Pharmacological properties of the drug Dekaris
The active substance of the drug Decaris - levamisole ((-) 2,3, 5,6-tetrahydro-6-phenylimidazo-[2,1-β]-thiazole hydrochloride) - has an anthelmintic effect. By exhibiting a depolarizing effect on ganglion-like formations of nematodes, it causes neuromuscular paralysis. With normal intestinal motility, paralyzed nematodes are eliminated from the body within 24 hours after taking the drug. Quickly absorbed in the digestive tract. The maximum concentration of levamisole in the blood plasma is observed on average after 1.5–2 hours. Levamisole is metabolized in the liver, the main metabolites are p-hydroxy-levamisole and glucuronide. The half-life is 3–6 hours. Less than 5% of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine and less than 0.2% in the feces.
Indications for use
Most often, Dekaris is prescribed in case of infection of an adult or child with the following types of helminths:
- roundworms;
- hookworms;
- Trichostrongyloididae;
- whipworms;
- intestinal acne;
- necators;
- toxoplasma;
- Giardia.
To the question “how to take Decaris correctly?” Only a specialist can answer correctly.
In addition to the prescription, the doctor calculates the dosage, compliance with which is a necessary condition for successful treatment and minimizing the occurrence of side effects.
Most often it is calculated based on the age and weight of the patient.
Use of the drug Dekaris
For adults, Dekaris is prescribed in a dose of 150 mg once. Children are prescribed in the form of tablets of 50 mg once at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg:
Child's age, years | Body weight, kg | Single dose of the drug, mg |
≤3 | ≤10 | 25 |
3–6 | 10–20 | 25–50 |
7–10 | 20–30 | 50–75 |
11–14 | 30–40 | 75–100 |
It is advisable to take the drug in the evening after meals with a small amount of water. No additional laxatives or special diet are required. If necessary, treatment is repeated after a 7-14 day break.
Description
Dekaris deworming tablets are part of a number of synthetic anthelmintic drugs for humans. At the same time, it also has immunomodulator properties. The main form of release is tablets taken orally.
It is presented on the shelves in two types - for adults and, accordingly, for children. In the first case, the amount of active substance in the tablet is 150 mg, in the second - 50. In addition, to facilitate administration, a dye is added to the children's form, which gives the tablet an orange tint, and a flavor (peach).
Side effects of the drug Dekaris
When taken once as an anthelmintic, levamisole is usually well tolerated; headache, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations, convulsions, and dyspeptic symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may rarely occur. These phenomena are usually mild, short-lived and go away on their own. There are reports of the development of encephalopathy 2–5 weeks after taking the drug. When using the drug in high doses or with long-term therapy, leukopenia and agranulocytosis may occur.
Dekaris: analogues and special instructions
Previously, Decaris was available with a doctor's prescription, but today you can buy it yourself at any pharmacy.
Storage conditions
The drug must be stored at a certain temperature, it should be 16-25 degrees. The drug should be hidden as far as possible from children.
Best before date
Dekaris has a long shelf life; it can be stored for 5 years.
special instructions
Decaris should not be combined with alcohol intake, nor should you drink alcohol during the day. The component levamisole contained in the drug may partially impair coordination and attention. The medicine is not recommended to be taken while driving a car, as it can depress the nervous system, reduce concentration, and cause drowsiness.
Decaris is a fairly strong drug. During treatment, experts recommend staying at home and not going outside for 8 hours. It is at this time that a person may experience adverse reactions.
Dekaris should be given to children with caution, and only in the dosage prescribed by the doctor, which should not be exceeded independently.
For elderly people over the age of 65, the drug should also be prescribed with extreme caution, since in this case, the active substance Decaris can disrupt the functioning of the heart and also lower blood pressure.
The drug should be used with special caution by people with impaired renal function, liver function, as well as diseases associated with blood circulation, diabetes mellitus.
During treatment with Decaris, the level of leukocytes in the blood is monitored, as the drug is able to lower it.
The medicine should also be taken with caution in combination with vasodilators, as well as drugs that affect hematopoiesis.
Doses for patients at any age should be selected individually, and at the time of treatment it is necessary to monitor the patient's condition.
Analogs
Pyrantel is an effective remedy against helminths. The drug is able to quickly destroy all types of worms living in the human body, including worms. The substances included in the medicine affect the muscles of the helminths, as a result of which the motor nerves in the body of the worm are blocked. Pyrantel is capable of killing intestinal parasites both at an early stage of development and at a mature stage. It has a targeted effect against human roundworms, pinworms, hookworm disease (anemia caused by the action of helminths), and enterobiasis (deposition of worm eggs).
Vermox is an antimicrobial drug that fights helminths, human roundworms, is effective against enterobiasis, and also cures trichuriasis. The drug has a fairly wide spectrum of action; its components are capable of killing worm eggs already on the second day. The product destroys glucose, which is vital for roundworms, as a result, the synthesis of cellular tubulin is disrupted, after which the parasites die. The drug is allowed to be taken by children.
Zentel is a drug with a wide spectrum of action, has an antiprotozoal effect, and effectively fights all types of helminths. Zentel destroys glucose in the cavity of the worms, disrupts the function of the microtubular apparatus in them, which causes the death of the parasites, which are immediately removed from the human body. The drug relieves many types of intestinal infections: enterobiasis, hookworm, necatoriasis, ascariasis, clonorchiasis, opistrachiasis, giardiasis in children. The medicine is also prescribed if worms constantly appear in the child’s body.
Nemozol is an effective remedy against helminths. Thanks to the active substance albendazole, the level of tubulin in the blood of worms is disrupted, as a result of which synthesis in cells is disrupted, glucose is excreted, which leads to the death of the parasites. Nemozol is prescribed for long-term helminthic diseases caused by one or several types of parasites. The drug kills pork tapeworm larvae and also gets rid of ascariasis, giardiasis, taeniasis and other helminthic infestations.
If Dekaris is not suitable, analogues can only be purchased with a doctor’s prescription.
For children
Decaris is prescribed to children in a dosage of 50 mg; the tablets have a pleasant sweetish taste. The drug almost always causes adverse reactions in children. It should be remembered that the drug can be given to a child only after three years of age. Parents need to strictly monitor the dosage, otherwise the drug will cause poisoning.
Before taking Decaris, the child must be shown to a doctor and have his stool tested for enterobiasis. The specialist will determine what type of helminths lives in the child’s intestines, and then prescribe an active remedy. Most often, Dekaris is prescribed. In the right doses, the medicine can quickly rid a child of painful parasites. A repeat appointment is also prescribed by the doctor if there are no contraindications.
After the child has taken part of the pill, he must be monitored; he must not be left alone or allowed to go far from home, as he may suddenly become ill. There may be cases of intoxication of the body with poisons of parasites, which, upon death, release it into the body. This may cause the child to experience severe abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. In this case, it is necessary to provide symptomatic assistance, namely, provide plenty of warm drinks. If the poisoning does not go away within a few hours, you should call an ambulance.
During pregnancy and lactation
Under no circumstances should you drink Decaris during pregnancy. The drug causes poisoning of the body and can easily penetrate the placenta and into breast milk. If there is a need to take such medications, you need to consult a doctor so that the specialist can prescribe more gentle analogues instead of Decaris tablets. If the anthelmintic drug is not so toxic, there is no need to doubt its effect. Currently, many similar medicines are being produced to get rid of helminths, which are not so harmful to humans.
Experts believe that if Dekaris affected the development of the child in the early stages, the pregnancy must be urgently terminated. Cases have been identified where, after taking the drug in the second month of pregnancy, the fetus experienced heart pathology.
If a woman needs to take Decaris during lactation, then it is necessary to temporarily switch the baby to formula. At the end of treatment, do not breastfeed the baby for another week so that the remaining drug leaves the body completely. However, for weak helminthic infestations, it is better to choose an analogue of Dekaris.
Reviews
Olga, therapist
“The pediatrician always prescribed Dekaris for the child, a quarter of the tablet, we are 5 years old. My daughter lives permanently in the village with her grandmother; she is simply tormented by worms. Dekaris removes worms quite quickly, they come out already dead, just in heaps. The drug helps, the specialist said, do not exceed the dose, otherwise there may be severe poisoning. We give her pills once a month, there has been no addiction yet, the child feels good.”
Irina, seller
“I agree that the drug is strong, it is terribly harmful to the body. I took a whole tablet of it, I immediately began to feel sick, vomited, and felt dizzy. As the doctor later said, the poisoning occurred from the poisons of worms, when they began to die, they spray toxic substances into the body, and such effects appeared from them.”
Price, where to buy
Decaris tablets in Russia cost about 80 rubles per pack (50 mg), a 150 mg pack costs about 100 rubles. The drug is sold in a pharmacy in free form; a prescription from a doctor is not needed.
No matter how confident you are that the drug gets rid of parasites, you cannot take it without a dosage established by a specialist, especially if a child needs treatment. At first glance, it seems that helminthic infestations do not pose any danger, that they can be easily removed with any drug, but not everything is so simple.
The doctor must take stool for analysis, determine what type of worms live in the intestines, and then prescribe a suitable drug. This will allow you to kill parasites without unnecessary harmful effects on the body. Also, in the future, you should take the drug only after consulting a doctor.
Interactions of the drug Dekaris
When taking Decaris simultaneously with alcoholic drinks, disulfiram-like symptoms may develop. Caution is required when using Decaris with drugs that affect hematopoiesis. When taking Decaris simultaneously with coumarin anticoagulants, the prothrombin time may increase, so it is necessary to adjust the dose of the oral anticoagulant. Decaris increases the concentration of phenytoin in the blood, therefore, when using these drugs simultaneously, it is necessary to monitor the level of phenytoin in the blood serum. Do not use simultaneously with lipophilic drugs (chloroform, ether), as the toxicity of levamisole may increase.
Treatment regimen
How to take Decaris? Considering that the drug is available in two dosages, for children and for adults, therapy for both will be different.
Compliance with the treatment regimen is a necessary condition for a speedy recovery.
Children
Dekaris anti-worm remedy is prescribed to children aged 3 years and older. It is for them that the children’s dosage was created - 50 mg.
As already mentioned, to make taking the medicine easier, its tablets have a “cheerful” color and a pleasant apricot smell.
The action of Decaris has quite a considerable list of side effects. Therefore, a preliminary consultation with a doctor before starting treatment is vital.
Only if there are no contraindications in a small patient, the parasitologist prescribes and calculates the required dose.
Most often this is done according to the formula: 50 mg per 10 kg of child weight. However, there are other nuances.
In a simplified way, you can prescribe the daily dosage of the drug based on the weight of small patients:
- 3-6 years - dose from 25 to 50 mg;
- 6-10 years - dose from 50 to 75 mg;
- 10-14 years - dose from 75 to 100 mg.
A more accurate calculation would be based on body weight. The required amount of the drug is taken at a time during the evening meal.
Using Decaris as an anthelmintic does not imply following a particular diet—there is no need to adjust the diet.
Treatment of most types of helminthiasis (for example, the use of Decaris for pinworms) involves a one-time dose of the required drug.
In the case of toxoplasmosis, the duration of treatment increases to 3 days.

Adults
The dosage for adult patients is almost always 150 mg of the active substance. In particularly difficult cases, it may change, but this should be done exclusively by the attending physician.
Decaris for adults does not differ in the scheme of use from an adult. Admission is carried out in the same way as with children, during the last meal.
The tablet must be taken with water - at least 150 ml. The course in most cases is 1 day.
For toxoplasmosis, adults are prescribed to drink Decaris for 3 days.
After the main course of treatment, after 10-14 days it is repeated, but for preventive purposes.
The use of Decaris for prophylaxis is indicated only for adult patients, due to the possibility of pronounced side effects in children.
Brief description of Dekaris
Under Dekaris, people know the anthelmintic and immunomodulatory drug Levimazole. This drug is produced in Hungary by one of the most famous pharmaceutical companies - Gedeon Richter.
The release form of the medicine is 50 and 150 milligram tablets, which differ slightly from each other in the content of excipients.
The action of the drug is carried out in two directions:
- Levimazole paralyzes the muscles of the parasites, causing them to lose their ability to attach to the intestines.
- In parasites, energy metabolism is completely disrupted.
Decaris for prevention, as well as for treatment, is characterized by increased versatility in relation to:
- Hookworm.
- Nekatorov.
- Ascaris.
- Ostrits.
- Strongyloides.
- Whipworms and some other parasites.
Despite its widespread use, a truly positive and long-term effect is observed in the treatment of ascariasis, necatoriasis and hookworm.
It is also worth noting that Dekaris is almost in first place among all antiparasitic drugs in terms of the number of side effects, and whether it can be used by adults or children depends on many reasons.
The most common side effects include:
- Allergic processes.
- Disorders in the cardiovascular and circulatory system.
- Disorders in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Disturbances among the sense organs.
- Other types of violations.
Whether to take Decaris or not depends, of course, on many reasons, but the above side effects should be enough to understand that under no circumstances should you do it yourself.
The advisability of taking this antiparasitic drug for prevention against worms may also depend on other side effects, which the manufacturer does not always warn about in the instructions.
The results of subsequent studies of Dekaris, available on specialized pharmacological sites, indicate that there have been cases of death due to agranulocytosis (a pathological decrease in the level of leukocytes), which begins to develop after the use of the drug.
Also, according to the same sources, in order to avoid the development of agranulocytosis during therapy with Decaris, it is necessary to conduct a detailed blood test.
With a long course of deworming, tests must be carried out every 20 days, which in no way can be consistent with the use of Decaris as a preventive measure at home.
Prevention with Decaris in pregnant women is strictly prohibited due to the fact that the drug is embryotoxic and can lead to various problems with the development of the fetus, or even its death.
As for lactating women, although this has not been carried out, it has been proven that the active substance of Decaris, Levimazole, can be excreted into cow's milk.
Also, you should not drink Decaris at the same time as alcohol or any medications that contain alcohol.
This is due to the fact that when interacting with ethyl alcohol, Levimazole provokes the development of disulfiram-like reactions in the form of:
- Rapid heartbeat.
- Redness of the skin.
- Reducing blood pressure.
- Long-term aversion to alcohol.
Among other things, Levimazole has a huge number of incompatibilities with many other drugs, for example, if you take Levimazole and an antithrombosis drug from the Warfarin series at the same time, bleeding may occur.
If Decaris is taken together with the antifungal drug Amphotericin, this may increase the risk of hypotension, bronchospasm and kidney damage.
Many people involved in prevention almost never pay attention to the section that indicates drug interactions.
As for an overdose, it is even more dangerous than all the side effects combined, and it is worth noting that Decaris is the only antiparasitic drug, an overdose of which can lead to death.
Among other things, Dekaris also has a standard form of contraindications in the form of:
- Agranulocytosis.
- Renal, cerebrovascular and liver failure.
- Acute leukemia and suppression of bone marrow hematopoiesis.
Can I take it during pregnancy and lactation?
As a rule, pregnancy is a contraindication when using Decaris. Since the medicine has toxic properties and can negatively affect not only the expectant mother, but also the child. Therefore, in most cases, doctors try not to prescribe this drug to pregnant women.
It is also necessary to refrain from using anthelmintic drugs during breastfeeding. Because the components of Decaris are very quickly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and spread throughout the body, reaching breast milk.
Because of this, the child may suffer significantly, side effects or severe intoxication of the body may develop.
Therefore, the drug is prescribed only when absolutely necessary, but in this case the woman should stop breastfeeding and transfer the child to artificial feeding.
You cannot use Decaris during pregnancy on your own initiative; the drug should only be prescribed by a doctor.
Pregnant women are not recommended to take Decaris. The advisability of using the drug can only be determined by a parasitologist.
Usually, doctors recommend abstaining from any strong drugs, especially in the early stages of pregnancy. After all, antihelminthic properties are harmful to the human body itself.
Levamisole is toxic and often leads to serious pathological abnormalities of the fetus, as well as to termination of pregnancy. But there are times when the use of medicine is vital.
Such prescriptions can only be carried out by the attending physician.
The use of the drug for the treatment of helminthic infestations in women who are breastfeeding is also prohibited. Every parasitologist can answer how Decaris acts on breast milk. Levamisole poisons him. Therefore, it is important to completely stop breastfeeding during treatment.
The period of bearing a child and breastfeeding for a woman are contraindications to taking any anthelmintic drugs. During this period, the invasion should be treated only with traditional methods and according to the Chichagov system: herbs, infusions, juices, onions and garlic, pumpkin seeds.
If there are dangerous symptoms of enterobiasis and complications during lactation, when there is no other option but to take antiparasitic drugs, feeding should be stopped.
Only a specialist can prescribe Decaris during pregnancy - in emergency cases when folk remedies are ineffective - and only in the third (less often - second) trimester.
What parasites does it help with?
The drug is prescribed for intestinal helminths, which are retained in the human body due to their muscle activity. Many people are concerned about the question: “Does Dekaris help with pinworms?” Yes, the drug is used for enterobiasis, the causative agent of which is pinworms. An anthelmintic is also prescribed for roundworms, whipworms, hookworms and nematodes. Decaris can be used for toxoplasma, necator and intestinal acne. But the drug is ineffective against Giardia and other tapeworms or flukes.
Interaction with other medications
The use of Decaris together with drugs containing alcohol is strictly not recommended.
Otherwise, there is a high probability of the following conditions occurring:
- chest pain;
- redness of the skin due to a rush of blood to it;
- heart rhythm disturbance;
- nausea with vomiting;
- reflex cough.
These symptoms are included in the so-called group of Antabuse-like reactions. Therefore, it is necessary to give up both alcohol-containing medications and alcohol while using the anthelmintic in question.
Caution should be exercised when combining Dekaris therapy with medications whose action is aimed at correcting the functions of the bone marrow. The same applies to some blood thinners. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the dosage of such medications.
“Dekaris instructions for use” categorically does not recommend taking the anthelmintic together with drugs containing substances that have lipophilic properties (accumulation of adipose tissue).
These include tetrachlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride and others. Such medications increase the toxicity of Decaris, which will naturally lead to an increase in the intensity of side effects.
The pills didn’t help - what to do?
Possible reasons for the ineffectiveness of the drug:
- disruption of the therapeutic process;
- inappropriate dosage;
- failure to comply with hygiene rules.
In any case, you need to see a doctor and undergo all the necessary tests and scrapings. You may need to change your medication.
Temperature from Dekaris
Often in reviews you can find the comment: “After taking Dekaris, the temperature rose...”, what could this mean? Such a result is not possible from a single dose. Most likely, the patients' temperature is associated with another pathology. Another characteristic difference between this symptom is its duration. If this is a side effect, then its effect is short-lived.
Important! Before using the drug, carefully read the instructions.
Effect on hematopoiesis
The harm caused by Dekaris can manifest itself in the development of agranulocytosis, which characterizes inhibition of the hematopoietic system. In a state of agranulocytosis in humans, lymphocytes that provide active cellular immunity completely disappear in the peripheral blood. Agranulocytosis is a common side effect of many medications.
Patients should keep in mind that Decaris, whose side effects on the body are very diverse, produces an individual effect in each case. The drug may not provoke the development of agranulocytosis in a person if there is no primary damage to the leukocyte system.
With the development of agranulocytosis, a person becomes more susceptible to the effects of viruses and microorganisms, especially if drug poisoning is registered.
Reviews
Although in approximately half of the cases the “side effects” of the drug are limited only to headache and dizziness, the following reviews indicate that the consequences of treatment with Dekaris are unpredictable and can be extremely unpleasant.
Natalya: “The whole family was treated for worms. I took a pill before bed. I woke up from the terrible smell of paint, and soon there was strong perspiration and fever. It was very difficult to breathe. Then I started vomiting and sat on the toilet for more than an hour. I rinsed my stomach and felt better, and was finally able to fall asleep. My 12-year-old son only developed a fever, but my husband had no side effects at all.”
Victoria: “I have already given my child Decaris twice as a preventative measure. At the age of 9 there were no side effects, but at the age of 11 I was poisoned by it specifically. I returned from school with a fever. By night it rose to 39°, but in the morning, oddly enough, it disappeared. But nausea, headache and severe weakness appeared, the child vomited bile. In general, if you give Decaris to children, then only as prescribed and under the supervision of a doctor.”
Olga: “I drank to prevent worms because I keep cats. Half the night was simply hellish: nightmare after nightmare; I thought I was dying. Then, on the contrary, insomnia appeared, hallucinations began, it became difficult to breathe, and the smell of bleach was everywhere. Dekaris was blacklisted forever.”
Elena: “There is a “free-roaming” cat living at home, so without any tests, I decided to accept Dekaris for my misfortune. Result: they took me away in an ambulance. Blood pressure - 150 over 100, heart rate - 120 beats, fever, dizziness, it was very difficult to breathe. A week later the ambulance took me away again, the doctor discovered that I had VSD. Before taking the drug, there was not even a hint of any heart disease. Before I drank Nemozol, there were no side effects.”
Overdose
Clinical studies of Decaris tablets showed that signs of drug overdose were observed after taking a single dose of 600 of the active substance levamisole.
The following signs of general intoxication of the body appeared:
- drowsiness;
- muscle spasms;
- nausea;
- diarrhea;
- vomit;
- confusion;
- dizziness and loss of coordination of movements;
- Strong headache.
Depending on the number of tablets that were taken within a short period of time, loss of consciousness and a critical decrease in blood pressure are possible.
Patients with signs of overdose are prescribed gastric lavage to replenish the water-salt balance disturbed as a result of prolonged vomiting and diarrhea. The patient must be in the inpatient department of the hospital under the supervision of doctors who monitor the body’s vital functions.
How to replace Dekaris
As is already obvious from patient reviews, taking Decaris as a preventative measure is like shooting sparrows from a cannon. For these purposes, natural antiparasitic agents based on anthelmintic plants are much better suited.
These tinctures and teas contain extracts or dried raw materials:
- sage;
- tansy;
- mint;
- calendula;
- birch leaves;
- wormwood;
- cucumbers;
- agrimony;
- yarrow;
- oak bark;
- ferules;
- sumac berries.
In addition, anthelmintic tinctures contain bear liver extract, which successfully breaks down the eggs of worms, which prevents self-infection.
Advantages of natural preparations:
- they are distinguished by the harmlessness of folk remedies while the effectiveness of chemical ones, which allows them to be taken as a preventative measure (including for children);
- universal - suitable for getting rid of most types of worms;
- Unlike traditional medicine, they do not require time to prepare.
Use for psoriasis
It is known that Decaris is also an immunomodulator. And since psoriasis develops against a background of weakened immunity, the drug was previously used to treat this skin disease. Today, there are gentler and more effective remedies for psoriatic plaques. Therefore, it is better to use specially developed drugs for treatment, since using Decaris on its own can lead to the development of side effects.
Analogs, price
Decaris has no analogues that use the same active ingredient.
But, comparing the drug according to its effectiveness against one or another type of helminthiasis, Dekaris analogues are included in the following list of anthelmintics:
- Vermox;
- Piperazine;
- Telmox;
- Pyrantel;
- Vormin;
- Nemozol;
- Helminthox;
- Pirvinium paomat and others.
The average price of an anthelmintic fluctuates around 60-80 rubles, based on the dosage of the active substance.
Main effects
Decaris is used to poison parasites that have entered the human body. The effect of the drug is ensured by levamisole, the active substance of the drug. Most often, side effects of the drug occur in cases where it is prescribed for the treatment of ascariasis. Ascariasis is one of the most common helminthic diseases. This is especially common for parents of young children.
Levamisole, acting as an active substance, effectively suppresses enzymatic activity in the cellular metabolism of roundworms. Such suppression leads to paralysis of the muscles of the parasites and their complete loss of mobility. After taking Dekaris, immobilized parasites are excreted in the feces.
It is believed that the medication also strengthens the immune system.
Previously, Decaris was used to stimulate children's immunity before the flu epidemic, which is considered a side effect.
Now the drug is not used for these purposes, since there are more effective medications with fewer unwanted effects when used. In addition, many people feel ill after taking the drug.
The immunostimulating effect of the drug is explained by its stimulation of T-lymphocytes, which stabilizes the general state of cellular immunity. Currently, using Decaris to stimulate the immune system is not advisable, since the risks outweigh the possible benefits.
