In this article we will look at the instructions for use for the drug “Progestogel”.
This remedy, the main active component of which is progesterone, is the hormone of the corpus luteum. It blocks estrogen receptors, promoting better absorption of fluid from the tissue and reducing compression of the milk ducts of the mammary gland. Progesterone also has a blocking effect on prolactin receptors, which reduces milk production in the breast.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
This ointment is intended for external use in the treatment of mastodynia . The active substance progesterone has a blocking effect on estrogen receptors, which improves the absorption of fluid from tissues, reducing the compression of the milk ducts. At the same time, blocking of prolactin receptors in the mammary gland was noted, leading to a decrease in lactopoiesis . In general, Progestogel begins to act due to an increase in the concentration of the active substance in the tissues of the mammary gland .
The use of the drug, even when creating a high concentration of progesterone at the site of application, does not cause systemic action or undesirable effects.
Some natriuretic effects as a result of inhibition of tubular reabsorption and increased cellular filtration, which prevents fluid retention during secretory transformations of the glandular component of the mammary gland and pain syndromes.
With the transdermal method of administering gestagen , there is a noticeable effect on the state of the vascular network and glandular epithelium, due to this, capillary permeability decreases, swelling of the breast tissue decreases, and the symptoms of mastalgia are eliminated.
The transdermal method of using the gel promotes rapid penetration into the tissue of the mammary glands, bypassing the process of destruction in the liver and without leading to the development of undesirable systemic effects in the body. In this case, the absorption of progesterone is about 10% of the dose and lasts for at least an hour from the moment of application of the drug, without changing the hormonal level.
With the help of cutaneous applications in the mammary glands, a high concentration is created at the site of application, even with a reduced dose.
Secondary metabolism of the drug occurs in the liver. In this case, conjugates with sulfuric and glucuronic acid are formed. In addition, the participation of the CYP2C19 isoenzyme was noted.
The drug is excreted mainly through the kidneys - about 50-60%, and a small amount through bile, about 10%. The number of metabolites that are excreted through the kidneys depends on the phase of the corpus luteum.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
No data on negative effects on the fetus have been established. But, despite this, it is not recommended to use Progestogel during pregnancy, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
The drug is contraindicated during breastfeeding, as it passes into breast milk. The exception is lactostasis. But at the same time, an integrated approach to therapy is used. The gel is combined with Bromocriptine, and an hour after taking the drug, milk is expressed. After some time, its quantity will be restored to the level necessary for feeding the child.

Estrogens and mastopathy
Estrogens are the main ovarian hormones, divided into several dozen fractions, the main ones of which are estrone, estradiol and estriol. Different fractions of estrogens perform different functions. With a lack of estrogen, a woman’s appearance and mood changes, and an excess of estrogen provokes the formation of tumors and the development of hormone-dependent diseases, such as mastopathy.
Estrogens are formed from testosterone and androstenedione under the control of the aromatase enzyme. Cholesterol and luteinizing hormone are also involved in this process. Estrogen synthesis is impossible without male sex hormones - androgens.
The role of estrogen in the body:
- estradiol is the main estrogen, it acts in the body from the onset of puberty to menopause;
- estrone becomes dominant during the postmenopausal period;
- estriol is considered the weakest fraction; its activity increases during pregnancy.
The action of estrogens is possible only when they bind to receptors. They affect not only functions unique to the female body, but also many organs. In particular, estrogens protect against pathological processes, which becomes especially noticeable during menopause, when the concentration of hormones decreases and a woman’s health weakens.
An increase in estrogen levels is called hyperestrogenism. The cause of this condition may be obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, use of contraceptives, hypothalamic dysfunction, liver disease. Estrogen levels can increase with excessive consumption of beer, fatty foods of animal origin, soy and legumes.
Excessive synthesis of estrogens in women of reproductive age provokes endometrial hyperplasia of the uterus, mastopathy, endometriosis, and cycle disorders. The intensity and pain of menstruation increases, and infertility is possible. In addition, with an excess of estrogen, blood pressure increases and blood clots form. In this state, excess weight appears faster, acne occurs, and hair falls out. The woman becomes irritable, sleeps poorly, and suffers from migraines.
Mastopathy is hyperplasia of breast tissue, a violation of the ratio of connective and epithelial tissue. In the first phase of the cycle, estrogen fractions provoke the proliferation of the mammary epithelium, but this process is soon blocked by another hormone - progesterone. With an excess of estrogen, breast tissue continues to grow, the structures become deformed, cysts, fibroadenomas and scars form. Progesterone (from the group of gestagens) can block the activity of estrogen. Sports and diet have a slight effect on estrogen concentrations.
Side effects
In rare cases, the use of the gel can cause disturbances in the functioning of the reproductive system, for example:
- increased tenderness of the mammary glands;
- strong flushes of blood;
- decreased libido;
- metrorrhagia.
In addition, allergic manifestations are not excluded - irritation at the site of application, swelling of the lips and neck, fever, headaches, nausea, and more.
Necessary Precautions
Under no circumstances should the dosage form be used without medical advice and prior measurement of the hormone level in the blood. The drug is sold in almost every pharmacy, and in most cases without a prescription, however, its independent use can lead to undesirable consequences, especially if there are undiagnosed tumor cells in the body.
You cannot use a drug that has expired, and even more so, it is prohibited to take it if the drug package has been opened. It should be stored out of reach of direct sunlight, in a specially designed place where children do not have access, at a temperature not exceeding +25.
Self-medication, or use of this medicine after the expiration date indicated on the package, can cause damage to health and cause negative consequences.
The use of any hormonal drug without appropriate indications, or for other purposes, can cause hair growth, contribute to changes in appearance, disrupt the natural level of hormones in the body, and lead to disruptions in hormonal function.
Instructions for Progestogel (Method and dosage)
This ointment is administered transdermally. To calculate the daily dose, use a special plastic dispensing spatula. When you need to apply Progestogel gel, the instructions for use advise pressing on the tube in a place above the line of the spatula. The duration of the therapeutic course does not exceed 1 month. After consultation with a doctor, it can be extended for a few more weeks.

Reviews about Progestogel
It should be noted that many patients use Progestogel gel, reviews of which are very varied. Women often report its effectiveness, for example, thanks to the use of this external remedy, “seals soften, pain decreases,” and the general condition of the female body improves. However, there are also reviews from patients when, as a result of treatment with the gel, they, on the contrary, began to feel severe pain, hardening and lumpiness in the area of application. Other ladies are simply afraid to use hormonal drugs, believing that they will further undermine their health.
At the same time, reviews from doctors show that when contacting a specialist, a full selection of complex therapy is carried out, which often includes Progestogel. If treatment is started in a timely manner, then in most cases it is highly effective. The main problem is the fact that women are in no hurry to see a doctor, trying to independently eliminate unpleasant symptoms using traditional medicine methods. It is this approach that causes severe consequences, with the development of pathologies that significantly complicate further treatment.
Use of the product for mastopathy
In women of reproductive age, cystic fibrous mastopathy occurs quite often. The pathology is benign, but often causes great concern to the patient.
The causes of the disease can be various factors: changes in hormonal levels and continuous depression, as well as the process of inflammation in the pelvic organs and very strong stress. The problem can be diagnosed by discomfort in the chest area. During palpation, a certain soreness is felt.
To eliminate the disorder, only drug treatment is prescribed. A specialist may prescribe oral medications intended for oral use. However, local medications also have a beneficial effect on eliminating swelling. It is one of the most effective drugs "Progestogel" for mastopathy. The opinions of patients indicate its rapid impact; experts note the presence of a hormone in the composition, which affects directly in the area of application.
The development of mastopathy is also facilitated by an increase in estrogen levels. The use of the drug in question makes it possible to reduce its production and increase the concentration of progesterone, thereby solving the problem.
In the mammary gland, with fibrotic disease, stagnation occurs, which leads to small compactions. The specific enzyme estradiol, which prevents this process, includes the drug “Progestogel”. Experts say that this component does not allow the development of oxidative processes and has a beneficial effect on the entire vascular system of the body. Patients using the product note that the pain, feeling of fullness and burning gradually go away.
Progestogel price, where to buy
As it turned out, the price of Progestogel in Moscow pharmacies varies between 445-577 rubles. Approximately the same price for Progestogel gel is observed in other Russian regions. A course of treatment may require 2-3 tubes of the drug.
