Sulfanilamide has an antimicrobial effect. The mechanism of action is due to competitive antagonism with PABA, inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, disruption of the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.
