The causes of bags under the eyes are varied. Have you ever wondered what swelling like this means? A friend of mine returned from vacation the other day. Happy and rested, but there were puffiness under her eyes, making her seem tired and sick. Many people, having characteristic bags or circles under their eyes, most often associate them with lack of sleep or fatigue. At first glance, this symptom is not at all serious. It doesn’t cause any pain and doesn’t interfere at all, except that it spoils the appearance of the face... Sometimes they are really associated with lack of sleep and fatigue and go away by lunchtime, but sometimes they last for months, which means you need to look for the reason, what they are talking about...
Power supply errors
People suffering from swelling of the areas around the eyes often attribute this to excessive fluid intake. This reason does indeed occur, but not always. The body only retains excess fluid that was drunk immediately before bed - then the kidneys simply do not have time to remove the water. However, swelling is observed both in “water drinkers” and, on the contrary, in people who limit fluid intake: because of this, the body begins to reduce the activity of the kidneys in order to create water reserves in the tissues.
Fluid retention in the body is also facilitated by excessive indulgence in smoked, spicy and salty foods, and alcoholic drinks.
What to do if your lower eyelids are swollen
How to treat swollen eyelids and dark circles under the eyes? If the swelling under the eyes is not due to illness, but due to natural reasons, then any eye cream with caffeine, horse chestnut, hyaluronic acid (Bark, Garnier) will do.
Drug therapy is prescribed depending on the cause of the disease:
- Allergic reactions. Combined therapy is required: intestinal adsorbents + antihistamines. Intestinal adsorbents bind and remove allergen-antibody complexes and have a nonspecific detoxifying effect: Polyphepan, activated carbon, Polysorb. Antihistamines block the inflammatory mediator histamine: Suprastin, Cetrin. For Quincke's edema, steroid hormones are additionally administered intravenously: Hydrocortisone, Dexamethasone. Drops are applied locally: “Dexamethasone”, “Allergodil”.
- Heart diseases are treated by a cardiologist, kidney diseases by a nephrologist. Consultation with specialists is required for correct diagnosis. This is the only way to get the right treatment. Visin drops can be used as an auxiliary therapy against eye swelling. They constrict blood vessels, providing an anti-edematous effect.
- The first step is to remove the foreign body. As a quick way to get rid of swelling of the eyelids, drops “Natural Tear” or “Vizin”.
- Trauma, blow, damage are reminded of themselves by the presence of a black eye. Troxevasin ointment will help with swelling and a bruise under the eye.
- Inflammatory eye diseases in an uncomplicated form are treated by prescribing drops with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects: “Tobrex”, “Albucid”.
- Oncological diseases. Benign neoplasms are observed and treated by an ophthalmologist, malignant neoplasms by an oncologist. Treatment should be aimed at the underlying disease. Visin drops are suitable for auxiliary therapy; they will reduce swelling.
Folk remedies
Treating puffiness under the eyes at home does not require special knowledge. The necessary ingredients can be purchased at the pharmacy and at the market.
- Anti-swelling mask.
If you wake up in the morning and see swollen eyelids, then parsley and potatoes will come to the rescue. They contain many vitamins and minerals that will help quickly and effectively get rid of puffiness under the eyes.
Recipe for making a parsley mask: Grind 1 teaspoon of parsley to a pasty consistency, mix with 1 tablespoon of sour cream. Apply the resulting mixture to closed eyelids, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Recipe for making a potato mask: grate the potatoes, place the pulp in gauze napkins, then apply to the eyelids for 10–15 minutes.
- Compress for swelling.
The following herbs are suitable for infusion: sage, chamomile, linden, dill, arnica, string.
Recipe: pour 1 teaspoon of the selected herb into 100 ml of boiling water, let it brew for 10 minutes. Divide the resulting infusion in half: cool half, heat half. Now you need to alternately apply cotton pads soaked in either cold or hot infusion to your eyelids. If there is swelling under one eye, then it is enough to apply a compress to one eye.
- Herbal tea.
It is useful for swelling of the eyelids to drink herbal teas from chamomile, string, and sage. Leaf green tea has a good effect. Herbal teas help remove excess fluid from the body.

Massage
Eyelid massage helps eliminate swelling after sleep. How to do it correctly?
First you need to understand the anatomical basis of massage. Lymph is a clear liquid that moves through the lymphatic vessels. It is responsible for removing harmful cell waste products. Lymph leaves the eye area and accumulates in two groups of lymph nodes: the parotid and submandibular. Therefore, movements during massage are directed towards these nodes, i.e. towards the temple and bridge of the nose.
The massage should be done with light tapping movements with the fingertips daily for 2–5 minutes.
We invite you to watch a video about lymphatic drainage facial massage, which will help cope with swelling:
Exercises
Use eye exercises and do them with us every day. In the video you will find a set of exercises and many interesting tips:
If swelling does not go away, despite the measures taken, then it is necessary to undergo an examination to find the cause.
Household reasons
Puffiness of the undereyes often occurs as a result of the most common life events. It can be caused by:
- fatigue of the eye muscles after prolonged work at the computer, reading, sewing, doing small handicrafts, driving a car;
- lack of sleep or interrupted night rest;
- prolonged crying (especially against the background of severe nervous strain);
- incorrect posture while sleeping. Thus, the habit of sleeping without a pillow contributes to the formation of bags under the eyes;
- being in a smoky room (including active or passive smoking);
- entry into the eye of a foreign body or contact with an aggressive agent (acid, hot fat, caustic vapors).
A bag under the eye can be the result of a head injury (most often in the forehead, bridge of the nose or temple). Moreover, swelling sometimes plays the role of a protective cushion, protecting the eye from force. However, this phenomenon should not be considered positive, since the subcutaneous tissue, oversaturated with fluid, is easily infected.
What do permanent bags under the eyes mean?
The condition of the skin in the periocular area can be used to judge the condition of most internal organs. The cause of persistent swelling is usually a disease. The color of the bags is of great importance.
Cosmetologists conduct a special test to determine the causes of swelling. To do this, use the tip of your finger to lightly press on the lower eyelid and release. If the skin becomes darker, it means that characteristic age-related changes are occurring. A non-changing color indicates exposure to an allergen, and faint circles indicate problems with blood vessels.
Doctors also often look at the shade of the bags when visually examining a patient to make the correct diagnosis.
Blue circles
The most dangerous thing that dark circles under the eyes can indicate is heart disease, including such a dangerous pathology as heart failure.
Additional symptoms of heart disease:
- pain behind the sternum on the left;
- rapid pulse;
- dyspnea;
- constant malaise;
- fatigue.
In this case, you should contact a cardiologist as soon as possible, who will conduct the necessary examinations (ECG, X-ray, ECHO), based on the results of which he will prescribe adequate treatment.
Other causes of bluish bags on the face in women are:
- too thin skin;
- lack of sleep;
- smoking;
- hormonal imbalances in pregnant women;
- alcohol abuse.
Often blue swelling of the lower eyelids appears as a result of head injury. Severe injuries are characterized by the formation of “spectacles” around both eyes. The situation requires a visit to a traumatologist and an X-ray examination.
Brown circles
Bags of a brownish tint bother women with impaired pigmentation and tan lovers.
Dark circles also form with an incorrectly selected diet, which results in a lack of vitamins and nutritional deficiencies.
Red circles
Redness around the eyes is a classic symptom of inflammation. The most common cause is inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye. The nature of the disease may vary. Experts distinguish: viral, bacterial, gonococcal, allergic conjunctivitis. They have similar symptoms and require treatment by an ophthalmologist.
Another common pathology that leads to red circles is sinusitis. The sinuses are located directly under the eyes, so when one of them (or both) becomes inflamed, a reddish swelling forms in the lower eyelid.
If sinusitis is unilateral, a bag may form under only one eye. Additional symptoms of the disease:
- persistent nasal congestion;
- low-grade fever;
- headache in the frontal region;
- general malaise.
An ENT doctor treats sinusitis. If the disease is acute, antibacterial drugs and physiotherapy are usually prescribed. In chronic cases, a puncture is performed.
Yellow circles
Yellow eyelids in women indicate the likelihood of the following problems:
- liver pathologies;
- increased levels of carotene;
- disturbances in the functioning of the circulatory system;
- constant stress;
- gallbladder diseases;
- prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays;
- insufficient rest;
- alcoholism and smoking.
If the cause of yellowness is pathology of internal organs, you will need the help of a specialist. When it is caused by everyday factors, it is enough to correct the lifestyle.
Excessive passion for cosmetics
Abuse of cosmetics by representatives of the fairer sex creates additional factors contributing to the appearance of bags under the eyes. The reason may be:
- excessive amounts of foundation, powder or shadows on the eyelids and area around the eyes, as well as incomplete removal of decorative cosmetics before bedtime;
- use of poorly selected or low-quality cosmetics;
- improper use of moisturizers. Each such product contains from 80 to 90% water. When applying too thick a layer of cream to the face, some of the liquid may be absorbed into the skin and create swelling;
- cosmetic procedures. So-called beauty injections based on botulinum toxin (“Botox”, “Dysport”) create temporary disruptions in the lymphatic drainage system and contribute to the appearance of subcutaneous fluid accumulations.
Puffiness under the eyes can occur in women at the end of the menstrual cycle due to excess estrogen. In expectant mothers, swelling is often observed in the later stages of pregnancy, when the kidneys have difficulty coping with the increased load and do not remove water from the body quickly enough.
Most common causes of swelling
The appearance of bags can be contributed to by: excess salt in the diet, frequent consumption of alcohol, but this may also be associated with the manifestation of chronic diseases, for example, the thyroid gland, kidneys and heart.
A little about the physiological structure
Inside the orbit, the eyeball is surrounded by periorbital tissue; this is nothing more than a layer of adipose tissue that protects it from damage, or rather, is a shock-absorbing cushion. And the skin of the eyelids, consisting of connective tissue, holds the fat layer inside the eye socket.
Not so long ago, it was believed that bags appear in all people as a result of stretching of the connective tissue membrane (eyelid). When it loses its elasticity, the skin stretches and is unable to retain the fat layer inside, thereby forming a kind of hernia.
But several years ago, scientists came to the conclusion that edema is associated with an increase and proliferation of fatty tissue. As it grows, it does not fit in the eye sockets and protrudes outward, stretching the skin.
After sleep, the volume of the bags, associated with swelling, increases as the tissue fills with fluid. When a person begins to move, under the influence of activating processes that increase blood circulation and lymph movement, the bags fall off. If they have another reason for their formation, they hold on permanently.
What contributes to the appearance of edema
Typically, puffiness under the eyes is the result of excess fluid accumulating in the tissues. In many cases, swelling is also accompanied by dark circles, as a result of uneven pigmentation and the presence of small vessels in this area. Or it's human aging.
Very often, puffiness under the eyes can be associated with a genetic predisposition. In such a situation, swelling and bruising under the eyes do not depend on external conditions and lifestyle and are not associated with any disease.
For some, this problem may occur periodically, for example, if water bags under the eyes appear in the morning, they are caused by disorders in the lymphatic system.
Among the factors that contribute to the formation of swelling around the eyes should also be mentioned:
- insufficient amount of sleep and accumulated fatigue, which disappear after a good rest, long and intense visual work at the computer, reading a book,
- increased hormone synthesis in women before menstruation,
- excessive physical or mental stress, prolonged exposure to stress.
For men, and women too, it can be alcohol abuse and smoking. Drinking alcoholic beverages retains water in the body. The kidneys cannot cope with their functions and as a result, in the morning the face swells and dark and even black bags appear under the eyes.
Eating with a lot of salt. This is especially true when eating too much in the evening, before bed. Salty food causes thirst in the body, the kidneys do not have time to remove the existing fluid, which manifests itself in the form of edema in the morning.
Excessive tanning contributes to the appearance of bags under the eyes and swelling on the face. The body, protecting itself from an increased proportion of ultraviolet radiation, includes a protective reaction in the form of fluid accumulation in the subcutaneous layer.
Age-related features of the skin, when the synthesis of collagen and elastin decreases, leads to impaired elasticity and sagging.
An unhealthy lifestyle predisposes to the accumulation of toxins in the body. The sensitive skin under the eyes becomes increasingly thin and the blood vessels more fragile, which makes the swelling even more pronounced.
All of the above reasons for the appearance of swelling under the eyes do not cause other symptoms and go away on their own. If we talk about age-related changes, then this reason is also not related to health. Such bags are always present.
When large bags appear as a result of the proliferation of subcutaneous fat, this requires surgical intervention.
When bags under the eyes are a symptom of an illness
Sometimes women tend to mistakenly think of bags under the eyes as a cosmetic defect, whereas the problem already indicates the first signs of a pathological process in the body, i.e., indicates a developing disease. Usually accompanying symptoms appear in the form of poor health and malaise.
In such cases, the reasons are completely different, this may be due to:
Kidney disease. In acute glomerulonephritis or pyelonephritis, bags appear overnight. In this case, additional symptoms are observed in the form of malaise and lower back pain, fever and urination disorder, headaches.
Allergic contact dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and less commonly edema may be associated with atopic dermatitis. An allergic reaction with swelling, which can appear within a few hours, appears to plant pollen, animal hair, dust, certain foods, and insect bites. A characteristic feature is allergic itching. In this case, you should contact an allergist.
This problem should not be underestimated, and if it is chronic, you should consult a doctor for a more accurate diagnosis.
With respiratory and viral infections, red bags form under the eyes within a few days of illness. This may be sinusitis, when the paranasal sinuses become inflamed. Or sinusitis, in which a bag more often appears under one eye if it is one-sided. When the conjunctiva of the eye becomes inflamed, swelling and redness, pain and burning appear, and the eyelids stick together in the morning.
With pathology of the thyroid gland. Bags under the eyes can signal problems with the thyroid gland. This is often associated with hypothyroidism, the symptoms of which also include: chronic fatigue, weight fluctuations, dry skin, arrhythmia, digestive problems, decreased libido, problems with thermoregulation, poor memory and attention. With diseases of the thyroid gland, swelling can spread to the face.
For cardiovascular disease. The bags appear blue or dark cyanotic, appear more in the evening, and become smaller in the morning. At the same time, the legs swell, increased fatigue, shortness of breath appear, and performance decreases.
With depression syndrome of the superior vena cava. With this disease, the appearance of bags under the eyes is accompanied by swelling of the face, bleeding from the nose, hoarseness of the voice and cough. This is explained by a violation of the outflow of venous blood from the head to the heart. As a rule, it is a manifestation of metastases.
In case of injuries to the face and head, as a result of bruises of the soft tissues of the face, swelling appears under the eyes, with severe bruising. In such cases, it is imperative to undergo an examination to avoid suspicion of a skull fracture.
What do bags under the eyes in pregnant women mean?
During pregnancy, bags and swelling also sometimes appear. In most cases, considered normal. Because during the period of bearing a baby in the body, as a result of restructuring, fluid accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue and adipose tissue and salts accumulate. This is manifested by an increase in body weight and increased skin hydration.
And yet, the emergence of such a problem should be treated with caution. Especially if it was not associated with fatigue or drinking a lot of water at night.
But in later stages of pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, swelling is considered more natural. But if they were noted already in the early stages, then there is reason to worry about your health, which may indicate kidney problems or a pregnancy complication.
Bags under the eyes in a newborn and one-year-old child
You can often see bags under the eyes of a newborn. This manifestation is considered natural, since during childbirth the child suffered severe compression of the head, which sometimes slightly affects blood circulation.
There is a reason to take care of your health if your infant shows signs of:
- unstable water metabolism, which is not dangerous, since it occurs in almost all children under 3 years of age;
- congenital hypothyroidism - insufficient functioning of the thyroid gland. Already in the first months, a child may experience symptoms of increased body weight, delayed general development, and swelling;
- hemolytic disease. This is a manifestation of an immune conflict associated with different Rh factors in the blood of the child and mother;
- congenital heart disease or congenital liver pathology with jaundice and edema;
- increased intracranial pressure, which is caused by hydrocephalus of the brain;
- diseases of the kidneys or urinary system associated with inflammatory processes or developmental abnormalities;
- an allergic reaction, which is most often associated with food taken in an infant. But there must be additional signs in the form of skin rash, itching, Quincke's edema;
In a one-year-old child and a newborn, the reasons for the appearance may be related purely to physiology. So this could be prolonged crying or frequent drinking of water, or an uncomfortable position of the child in the crib, when the baby’s head is lower than his body.
In older children, the causes of swelling and bags are explained by the same reasons as in adults. Be especially wary if other signs are added to the swelling, such as fever, pain, lacrimation or urinary dysfunction.
Age bags under the eyes and wrinkles
Perhaps this problem is the most common one that forces women to turn to a cosmetologist. With age, skin loses its elasticity, the synthesis of collagen and elastin in the skin slows down, which leads to sagging and the appearance of wrinkles.
But a similar problem also occurs in young women. In these cases, lifestyle factors play a role:
- short sleep, less than 7 hours;
- constant stress that causes spasms of subcutaneous vessels, leading to oxygen starvation of cells;
- smoking and alcohol. People who abuse these habits look much older than their years. The skin is dull, flabby without proper turgor;
- unfavorable environmental conditions. The presence of harmful impurities, gases and poisons in the air and water negatively affects the skin.
If bags under the eyes are explained by the listed reasons and age-related characteristics, they do not pose a danger to the body. And if the question arises of how to get rid of them, then you can solve it by communicating with a cosmetologist.
Allergy
If swelling under the eyes is accompanied by lacrimation, pain in the eyes, nasal congestion, sneezing, photophobia and redness of the eyelids, the cause may be an allergic reaction. Tap water, pet hair, plant pollen, food products, and medications often act as aggressive agents.
In this situation, discomfort and bags under the eyes disappear when contact with the allergen ceases. Antihistamines and anti-itching creams or gels will help speed up recovery. But medications must be prescribed by a doctor.
Defect elimination methods
Most people, especially women, having discovered sufa on their faces, begin active experiments with “proven” products. A variety of creams, gels and serums are used, which are usually used to eliminate bags under the eyes, massages, cold compresses and lotions with decoctions of medicinal plants, and other folk remedies. However, a satisfactory result is not achieved. Sufas do not shrink for the simple reason that it is not just an accumulation of fluid - it is fatty tissue that, under the influence of the natural law of gravity, sag downwards. And masks and massages alone will not help here.
Hardware cosmetology is something that will really help you quickly, safely and permanently get rid of paint bags, without lengthy rehabilitation, large financial costs and dubious experiments
Today, swelling and accumulation of fat in paint bags can be removed using the following gentle methods:
- Lymphatic drainage. Microcurrent therapy is used to stimulate the outflow of fluid and the breakdown of fat cells. The procedure is painless and affordable, but is effective only for minor accumulations of fluid in the paint bags in young patients.
- Exposure to radio frequencies. If the swelling is significant, ablative radiofrequency exposure is used; if the bags are minor and appear from time to time, it is sufficient to periodically use the non-ablative method of exposure.
- Injections of the drug Diprospana. The substance Diprospan activates metabolic processes in cells, stimulates lymph outflow, due to which it noticeably smoothes and tightens the skin. But it must be injected exactly into the paint bag, not intradermally. It is important not to touch adjacent tissues, otherwise their atrophy will develop. Therefore, the procedure should only be performed by a qualified specialist with sufficient experience in carrying out such procedures.
- Thread lifting. Polydiaxanone fibers are implanted under the skin to improve contour and tighten the skin. But for noticeable, old edema, this procedure is ineffective; its use is only advisable for preventive purposes, so that the bags do not increase even more.
- Injection of fillers under the skin. The essence of the method is to smooth out the transition between the paint bag and the cheekbone by introducing some kind of filler. This can be a gel with hyaluronic acid; the patient’s own fat is often used. The procedure should also be trusted only to a trusted specialist; it is important to carefully introduce the filler and distribute it correctly so as not to distort the shape of the face, maintain naturalness and at the same time achieve smoothing of the sufa.
Subcutaneous injection of fillers or drugs that activate lymphatic drainage is the most painless and affordable way for young people to cope with sufas
The above methods of dealing with paint bags give a good effect, but temporary. If a patient wants to get rid of an unaesthetic defect once and for all, or at least for a relatively long period of time, he should pay attention to radical methods. Currently the following options are offered:
- Liposuction. The doctor, under local anesthesia, makes micro-punctures in the area of the sufas and uses a special drug to pump out excess fat. The paint bags shrink before our eyes and no longer appear for some time, since there is no longer room for the liquid to linger. But if the reason for the accumulation of fat in the eye and cheekbone area is not identified, after some time the bags will form again and the procedure will have to be repeated.
- Blepharoplasty. This method refers to full-fledged surgical interventions; it is also performed under local anesthesia; in rare exceptions, complete anesthesia can be performed. The doctor cuts the skin in problem areas and eliminates the defect in the lower eyelid area, after which he applies cosmetic sutures. The recovery period after surgery lasts about two weeks, but the effect lasts for 10, 20 or more years.
- Softlifting. The essence of the procedure is the same as with the cosmetic injection of subcutaneous fillers. The difference is that the filler is introduced into the deeper layers of the dermis and works more actively. Special liquid substances are used, making the filler virtually invisible visually and cannot be palpated.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, indications and contraindications. In addition, they all vary in cost. But the decisive role when choosing a procedure is played by the reputation of the clinic or office, the qualifications of the doctor and the physiological characteristics of the patient. It is strictly not recommended to carry out any procedures in the eye area without consulting a specialist.
Important! Regardless of age, health and the extent of the problem, before deciding on any of the procedures listed above, you should consult a doctor. The accumulation of fat and liquid in paint bags can be a signal of a serious metabolic disorder in the body and the development of dangerous pathologies. In this case, cosmetic measures will complement drug treatment aimed at eliminating the root cause of swelling on the cheekbones.
Intervertebral hernia of the cervical spine
When the cause of swelling is a herniated disc, the cosmetic defect is accompanied by:
- impaired coordination of movements;
- weakness;
- persistent headaches and other pains;
- feeling of “goosebumps” all over the body;
- pain in the cervical spine;
- stiffness;
- disruption of the peripheral nervous system. This is manifested by a change in the sensitivity of certain areas of the body.
The listed symptoms appear gradually, and in the initial stages of the disease, puffiness under the eyes may be its only sign.
Treatment
The method of therapy depends on the cause of the symptom. The most commonly used methods are:
- in the absence of edema throughout the body, it is recommended to drink at least 2.5 liters of fluid per day, stop doing this by 6-7 pm to reduce the load on the kidneys;
- reduce the consumption of salt, smoked meats, spicy foods;
- treat all infectious and inflammatory conditions on the organs of vision with the help of antibacterial therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs;
- in the presence of a viral disease, carry out prolonged therapy with antiviral agents for local and systemic use;
- engage in active physical activity in accordance with human health;
- eliminate all bad habits from your life such as smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction;
- take medications prescribed by a doctor in strict dosages, do not self-medicate;
- use of antihistamines for local and systemic use;
- therapy by sensitizing the body with an allergen in the autumn-winter period, so that the immune system gradually gets used to it;
- systemic therapy for pathologies of the liver, kidneys, and cardiovascular system.
If during therapy an increased reaction to any component of the medications occurs, they are immediately discontinued and consult a doctor for a second consultation. He will replace the drug with an analogue that will not cause side effects.
Kidney diseases
Edema due to dysfunction of the urinary system is sometimes called free-floating due to the ability to move from one area of the body to another. At the same time, bags under the eyes regularly appear in the morning. Uniform swelling of the face is also observed (patients notice imprints of the folds of bed linen on the skin after sleep).
As the disease progresses, other symptoms develop: a decrease in the amount and change in the color of urine, dysuria, and increased blood pressure. “Renal” edema is considered particularly difficult to treat.
Why do they form under the eyes in healthy women?
The main cause of puffiness in the eye area in women is lack of sleep. The problem may also arise due to:
- alcohol abuse;
- eye strain. This is especially true for ladies who work in an office using a PC;
- love of salty and spicy foods;
- frequent and prolonged exposure to the sun or solarium.
Natural causes include age-related skin changes, which cannot be avoided, but it is quite possible to prolong youth.
Liver pathologies
Liver diseases are manifested not only by accumulations of fluid under the eyes, but also by swelling of the hands (especially fingers). In addition, patients complain:
- for nausea, belching;
- a feeling of bitterness in the mouth;
- for pain in the hypochondrium on the right.
People suffering from liver pathologies may experience changes in the color of the skin and sclera (yellowness), as well as urine (darkens) and feces (becomes light). Such conditions are dangerous because they clearly manifest themselves when the disease is already thoroughly advanced.
Why are the eyes and eyelids prone to swelling?
Edema is an excess of interstitial fluid that is retained as a result of metabolic disorders.
The physiological structure of the tissue around the eyes determines its tendency to swelling:
- densely branched vascular network - blood flow itself creates swelling;
- a large space for retaining tissue, interstitial fluid, formed by excess skin of the eyelids, as well as looseness of the subcutaneous tissue;
- lack of subcutaneous fat;
- small amount of connective tissue (collagen, elastin fibers);
- constant work of the skin of the eyelids when blinking, squinting;
- pressure on the eyelids from periorbital fatty tissue;
- tight attachment of the skin of the forehead, nose, cheeks to the tissues located underneath them - when fluid accumulates in these places, it will move into the free space - the eyelids and the area under the eyes.
Problems with the heart and blood vessels
Cardiovascular pathologies are manifested by cyanosis or pallor of the skin, unilateral swelling of the face, instability of blood pressure, tachycardia, shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, pain in the heart, and a feeling of coldness in the extremities.
If bags under the eyes are accompanied by evening swelling of the lower legs (legs, ankles and feet), as well as the listed symptoms, this is an alarming sign that requires immediate consultation with a doctor.

Diagnosis of the cause of eye puffiness
A diagnostic examination of the body, including a number of mandatory studies, will help to find out the cause of the disease that provoked the appearance of swelling:
- blood pressure measurement;
- X-ray of the chest, skull;
- clinical, biochemical blood test;
- general urinalysis, urine according to Nechiporenko, Zimnitsky;
- Ultrasound of the heart, thyroid gland;
- Ultrasound of the kidneys, other abdominal organs, pelvis;
- computed tomography of the brain, internal organs;
- Magnetic resonance imaging;
- electrocardiography.
If any disease is detected, an additional examination is prescribed to clarify the diagnosis.
Vitamin deficiency
Swelling under the eyes may indicate a lack of vitamin B5 in the body. Along the way, headaches and muscle pain, fatigue, numbness of the feet, insomnia, and depression are observed.
In this case, you need to take vitamin preparations or brewer's yeast, as well as include in the diet milk, eggs, green vegetables, buckwheat and hazelnuts, which are natural sources of this vitamin.
The causes of swelling under the eyes are not always harmless. Such a cosmetic defect can be a consequence of serious problems in the body. If bags under the eyes occur regularly, this is a good reason for a medical examination.

Folk remedies for swollen eyes
Banal laziness and lack of time develop in a person a skeptical attitude towards all recipes that require a few free minutes and actions. The modern range of herbal teas in bags allows you to use the resulting tea as a lotion, and tea bags as lotions or compresses.
If there is no time for procedures in the morning, then you can apply silver spoons to your closed eyes for a few minutes. The effect will be visible immediately.
Regularly appearing swelling under the eyes requires systematic immediate control. Masks are made with the same duration and frequency as regular face masks. Apply them for 20-25 minutes, then wash off with warm water.
The most popular are masks with egg whites, which have a tightening effect and improve skin condition. A similar result can be achieved with a strawberry mask, which will refresh, smooth the skin, and have a good lifting effect. The berries are first cut into thin slices and applied to swollen areas of the skin.
An equally effective remedy is a parsley mask. Finely chopped greens are stored in the refrigerator, and if they dry out, just sprinkle a little water. To prepare a mask for dry and sensitive eyelid skin, just mix herbs and sour cream.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, parsley makes an excellent lotion for daily eyelid skin care. The infusion can be used to make warm compresses or ice cubes for morning care. To prepare, you need to take a tablespoon of fresh herbs, a glass of boiling water, and leave for a quarter of an hour.
For prevention purposes, you can apply buckwheat cakes to the skin around the eyes. It’s easy to prepare them: heat the buckwheat in a frying pan; grind into flour; dilute with water to the consistency of a thick dough; make small circles; place on the skin.
Grated apples also fight swelling. And if you don’t have time, you’re in a hurry, then place a peeled apple slice on the inflamed area of skin.
An inexpensive, effective, convenient product is gel masks, sold in pharmacies and cosmetic stores. You can use it almost anywhere, any time when you don’t have the necessary products and your skin urgently needs help. Before use, cool the mask for 15 minutes in the refrigerator or cool water, then apply to the face.
Traditional methods of treatment
Traditional methods of therapy are acceptable if the patient does not have an allergic reaction to herbal components, as well as the products used. Most often, doctors advise using the following methods:
- rosehip-based decoctions, which have an effective diuretic effect;
- in the presence of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the eyes, wash the mucous membrane and eyelids with chamomile, calendula, string, tea;
- applying ice cubes to the eyelid skin around the eyes, applying cucumbers to eliminate morning swelling.
The methods can help if the causes of swelling in the patient are not due to systemic diseases. In this case, complex therapy will be required.
