Umkalor tablets, p/capt. obol. 20 mg each No. 15

Weakness, fatigue, lethargy, headache, runny nose - all these symptoms are harbingers of a cold or viral diseases. At such moments, adults and children become distracted, drowsy, and everything literally falls out of hand.

Study and work fade into the background, but, as luck would have it, it is during this period that the most important tests and exams, inspections at work, and annual reports take place. There is no way to get sick. What to do, because antibiotics contain a lot of toxic substances, and they are not always effective.

Doctors all over the world recommend Umkalor. The drug is plant-based, has virtually no side effects, and does not require additional intake of probiotics.

If it is used when the first symptoms appear, the inflammatory process may not even develop, as confirmed by clinical trials.

Storage Features

Keep the bottle at home at room temperature in a dry place.
It is important that the product is placed where small children cannot reach it. The abstract warns that during storage the solution may become cloudy, and its smell and taste may change, but this does not impair its therapeutic properties.

The shelf life of Umkalor, if the bottle is sealed, is 2 years. From the moment the bottle is opened, the medicine can be stored for a maximum of 6 months. If more than six months have passed since the first use of the drops, the product should be thrown away, even if the solution placed inside the bottle has not yet been used up.

Umkalor medicine and benefits in one bottle

Experts who studied the therapeutic effects of the herbal medicine on the body came to the conclusion that its use for the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract allows one to avoid purchasing and taking various antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs. This greatly reduces treatment costs.

Umkalor's high safety profile and good tolerance by children allow it to be considered the drug of first choice for the treatment of acute respiratory infections and the complications that they can cause.

Some doctors believe that it is pointless to use Umkalor and a number of other herbal remedies to treat ARVI, because a disease of this nature can go away within 1 week without special therapy, which is equal to the period of taking this remedy. But it has still been proven that such drugs improve well-being during the period of illness and significantly increase the quality of life.

Analogs

There are no drugs completely identical to Umkalor, but if it is impossible to use these drops, the doctor can recommend products with a similar effect on the body of small patients.

  • "Sinupret". These drops and tablets contain extracts of primrose, gentian, sorrel, verbena and elderberry. They not only help to quickly eliminate the inflammatory process, have an anti-edematous and secretolytic effect, but also affect bacteria and viruses. Thanks to these effects, Sinupret promotes faster recovery from sinusitis, pharyngitis, adenoiditis and other inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract. Drops are prescribed to children over 2 years of age, and tablets are given from the age of six.
  • "Kameton." This product works thanks to eucalyptus oil, menthol, camphor and chlorobutanol. It is produced in a spray (this form is prescribed from the age of 7) and in a solution (this “Cameton” is used from the age of 5). The medication destroys pathogenic microbes and reduces the activity of inflammation.
  • "Eucasept." Such drops contain azulene, vitamin E, thymol, mint, fir and eucalyptus oils, so they have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. They are prescribed to children from the age of two.

special instructions

During storage, liquid plant extracts tend to become cloudy, but this does not affect their pharmacological effectiveness. Since Umkalor is considered a natural product, slight changes in the color and taste of the medicine are possible.

Due to the ethanol content in the drug (12 percent by volume), it is necessary to take into account that the highest single dosage for children over 12 years of age and adults contains 0.125 g of absolute ethyl alcohol, the highest daily dosage for children over 12 years of age and adults contains 0.375 g of absolute ethyl alcohol alcohol A single dosage for children under 12 years of age contains less than 0.1 g of absolute ethyl alcohol.

In case of alcoholism, head injury, brain diseases, impaired liver and kidney function (no experience of use), caution should be exercised in children from 1 year of age.

Impact on the ability to drive a car and operate machinery. When using the medicine, care should be taken when engaging in potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions (including driving vehicles, working with moving mechanisms).

Umkalor composition and properties

Description of the drug

The drug is based on an extract of the roots of a plant native to South Africa called Pelargonium sidoides. This plant should not be confused with our usual geraniums, which we also often call pelargoniums - this plant also has beneficial properties, but is not suitable for preparing such medicines.

Umkalor has a pronounced antimicrobial and antiviral effect, has the property of stimulating the immune system to independently fight infection, that is, it is an immunomodulator. Due to the content of flavonoids and other active substances, it can have a mucolytic effect, thinning mucus and promoting its rapid removal from the body.

In addition to flavonoids, this drug contains coumarins and some organic acids, due to which it has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. This remedy is able to protect the body at the cellular level, helps eliminate toxins and radionuclides, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, improves the body’s regenerative functions and makes it possible to quickly and efficiently get rid of accumulated phlegm.

The composition of the drug contains 100% solution of 80% alcohol extract of pelargonium roots, glycerin. The alcohol content in the product is 12 vol.%.

The use of this remedy is highly effective, since the drug actually has a complex effect. It has a positive effect on the activity of microorganisms, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microflora and reducing its negative impact on the body.

Since it supports the immune system, the body gains its own strength in the fight against infection and begins to fight it more effectively. The excellent effect of the medicine is complemented by mucolytic properties, that is, the cough is transferred from dry to wet status. Thick and viscous sputum, which prevented coughing and clearing of the respiratory tract, becomes more liquid under the influence of the solution and is easily released. This effectively speeds up the patient's recovery.

Release form and storage of the product

The drug is available in the form of a clear, brown alcohol solution. It is enclosed in dark glass containers equipped with a dropper, containing 20 and 50 ml of liquid. This device facilitates dosing of the product, which is carried out in drops.

The medicine is sold without a doctor's prescription and requires normal storage conditions: in a dark place, at a temperature of 0 to 25 ° C, out of the reach of children. Do not use after expiration date.

During storage, there may be some change in the color and transparency of the solution, as well as its taste.

This is due to the fact that the drug is based on plant materials. Such changes do not affect the quality and effectiveness of the product.

Reviews

  • Olga, 26 years old. We were “lucky” to get sick on Christmas Eve. As soon as the first symptoms appeared, my son and I started taking Umkalor. The result was not long in coming. Two days later the symptoms disappeared. Now we always have this wonderful product in our first aid kit. The only drawback is the price... Although when calculating the cost of antibiotics, then probiotics, as well as various antitussives, expectorants and anti-inflammatory drugs, the result will be in favor of Umkalor.
  • Galina, 35 years old. Antibiotics are dangerous for children, as they have a large number of adverse reactions, so I am afraid to give them to children. If I have a cold, I use Umkalor. Symptoms disappear within 3-4 days from the first dose of the medicine. The drug is simply irreplaceable even at the first manifestations of ARVI.
  • Natalya, 28 years old. When my daughter was one and a half years old, she became seriously ill, and we were admitted to the hospital. In addition to the main treatment, the baby was prescribed Umkalor. The drug is plant-based and contains only natural ingredients, which I really liked. The big disadvantage of the drug is the alcohol content, therefore, despite the safety and effectiveness of natural compounds, the drug is prohibited for use by infants and pregnant women. Minor difficulties were associated with the fact that the medicine is given 30 minutes before meals. My daughter was still small, and it was difficult to guess when she would want to eat. No adverse reactions were observed. Combination therapy turned out to be very effective, and the child quickly recovered.
  • Masha, 22 years old. Fever, runny nose, and cough have been bothering my daughter for the second day. We contacted our local pediatrician. The doctor prescribed the antibacterial, immunomodulating, expectorant drug Umkalor. The treatment process was difficult, as the child flatly refused to take the medicine. Through persuasion and persuasion, a solution to the problem was found. After 5 days of taking it, the condition improved significantly, the runny nose and cough decreased significantly. For prevention purposes, the drug was continued to be used until 10 days after the first dose. My daughter has completely recovered. A significant drawback was the bitter taste of the medicine. In general, the product is good, harmless, plant-based, and, unlike antibiotics, has virtually no adverse reactions.
  • Kira, 30 years old. Summer, river, sun, beach - what could be better? But swimming turned into a real problem for us. After swimming, my son’s ear hurt and a yellowish-green liquid leaked from it. We immediately went to the doctor. An ENT specialist examined the child and reported that we had eustachitis and prescribed Umkalor. We took the drug for a week, according to the instructions. At the re-examination, the doctor said that my son was healthy.

Operating principle

The action of the drug Umkalor is based on the properties of Pelargonium sidoides. The extract contains phenolic compounds: coumarins, flavonoids and phenolic acids.

Coumarins have an antimicrobial effect on both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, pneumococcus, β-hemolytic streptococcus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Friedlander's bacillus, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae) microorganisms.

The drug also has an immunostimulating effect, which is characterized by activation of phagocytosis, expression of adhesion molecules on the outer membrane of neutrophils, production of interleukins, interferon gamma and TNF-α.

Flavonoids have anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. This effect is realized due to inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes - mediators of inflammation. The ability to activate cytotoxic T lymphocytes stimulates cellular immunity, which directly affects the virus, destroying it. The production of neutrophils, B-lymphocytes, and, to a weaker extent, basophils and eosinophils also increases.

Phenol acids enhance the synthesis of interferon, which causes the transformation of cell proteins, which disrupts the reproduction and spread of viruses.

In addition to all of the above, medicinal substances increase the frequency of contractions of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchi, thereby increasing the discharge of sputum.

The combination of compounds in the drug affects all stages of pathogenesis, which makes it effective against any acute respiratory infections and acute respiratory viral infections.

special instructions

The drug contains ethanol 12%, which must be taken into account when calculating the dose for children

It is important not to exceed the allowed amount of medication per day, so as not to exceed the allowed amount of alcohol per day. Children over 12 years old can have no more than 0.375 g, and under 12 years old – 0.1 g

If after 7 days of treatment with the drug there is no improvement, you should consult a doctor.

When treating with the drug, extreme caution must be taken when engaging in hazardous activities that require increased alertness and speed of psychomotor reactions. The medicine affects the ability to drive vehicles due to the ethyl alcohol it contains

Side effects

  • Gastrointestinal tract reactions: pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea.
  • Reactions of the respiratory system: allergic rhinitis, minor bleeding from the nasal cavity.
  • Reactions of the hepatobiliary system: reversible increase in the concentration of liver enzymes.
  • Immune system reactions: urticaria and other types of rash, angioedema (Quincke's edema), anaphylactic shock.
  • If these symptoms appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.

How the drug works

All pharmacological effects of Umkalor are due to its composition. The drug is monocomponent, that is, it contains one active substance, which is the liquid extract of Pelargonium sidoides. This plant belongs to the geranium family and grows mainly in South Africa. An extract from it is successfully used to treat infectious pathologies of the ENT organs. Pelargonium extract contains essential oils that promote mucus removal, have an antimicrobial effect and increase the body's resistance to external environmental factors.

Indications for use of the drug include the following conditions:

  • sinusitis (frontitis, sinusitis, ethmoiditis, sphenoiditis);
  • rhinopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasopharynx);
  • tonsillitis;
  • inflammation of the bronchi (acute and chronic bronchitis).

The instructions for Umkalor indicate that it is recommended in the complex treatment of these diseases, that is, in combination with other drugs. But it can also be quite effective as a single drug if the disease has a relatively mild course and does not lead to serious complications.

If symptoms persist or worsen for a long time during Umkalor therapy, you should consult a doctor. Such signs may indicate the need to take more serious measures, such as prescriptions.

Pharmacodynamics

The active substances of Pelargonium sidoides extract are coumarins (umkalin, umkalin-7-0-monoglycoside, umkalin-7-0-diglycoside, 7-0-methylumkalin, scopoletin, scopolin), flavonoids (quercetin, kaemferol), acids (caffeic, umkalic, chlorogenic, silicon) – have antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus beta-hemolytic, Streptococcus pneumoniae), gram-negative bacteria (Hemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E.coli), as well as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Umkalin, 6,8-ditoxy-5,7-dimethoxycoumarin and gallic acid stimulate immune responses by increasing the oxygen-dependent phagocytic activity of macrophages, as well as inducing the production of interferon and tumor necrotic factor (TNF).

Release form and composition of Umkalor

The drug Umkalor is available in the form of a clear liquid, which may become slightly cloudy (opalescent) over time. The latter is not evidence of poor quality or expired shelf life: Umkalor drops are based on a plant extract, and such solutions are normally characterized by slight fluctuations in transparency and taste. (Sinupret solution also has a similar feature.)

The composition of the drug Umkalor includes ethyl alcohol at a concentration of 12%, so it is not indicated for infants. 85 percent glycerin (as an excipient) is also added to the Umkalor solution, due to which the drops have an oily consistency. The active basis of the drug in question is the root extract of Pelargonium sidoides in a concentration of 1:9-11.

The dosage method for Umkalor is drops, so the medicine is packaged in bottles with pipette dispensers. The instructions indicate: pelargonium extract decomposes under the influence of direct sunlight, so the drug is supplied in dark glass bottles.

Directions for use: oral administration only.

Analogs

A structural analogue of Umkalor with the same composition has not yet been developed. Therefore, drugs with similar pharmacological effects are used:

  • Lizobakt (antiseptic for topical use, indicated for infections and inflammations of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, gums, and larynx);
  • Sinupret (anti-inflammatory, decongestant, promotes the outflow of exudate during sinusitis);
  • Imupret (an antiseptic agent has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, suppresses the activity of ARVI pathogens);
  • Imudon (immunostimulant of bacterial origin for topical use, promotes the production of interferon, immunoglobulin A).

Purpose

Indications for use

Umkalor is prescribed for the treatment of chronic and acute infectious diseases of the upper respiratory tract and ENT organs:

  • Bronchitis
  • Laryngitis
  • Tracheitis
  • Different types of sinusitis (sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoiditis, sphenoiditis)
  • Different types of tonsillitis, including catarrhal tonsillitis
  • Rhinopharyngitis
  • Inflammation of the middle ear (otitis media)

In most cases, this remedy has a beneficial effect on the course of the disease and is well accepted by the patient, however, like any drug, it has contraindications and side effects.

All herbal products can provoke allergies in patients with high sensitivity, and therefore require caution when used.

Although this drug is available without a prescription, some people are advised to talk to their doctor about taking it first.

First of all, this applies to chronic patients who have several diseases at once, take many different medications and people suffering from various forms of allergic reactions.

It is also necessary to monitor the patient’s condition after the first doses of the drug, especially if we are talking about a small child. At the slightest sign of discomfort, side effects or allergies, immediately stop taking the drug and seek medical help. It is not recommended to change the dosage of the drug yourself or prolong its use. Only a doctor can make such a decision.

Features of application

Dosage for different ages

It is recommended to take the drug half an hour before meals, diluting it with a small amount of clean drinking water.

The standard period of treatment with the drug is a week - 10 days; if it is necessary to extend the treatment, or a relapse of the disease occurs, then the dosage in children over 12 years of age and adults is reduced to 10 - 20 drops three times a day. The same dose of medication is prescribed when continuing treatment after using antibiotics of artificial origin.

After the symptoms of a serious illness disappear, it is recommended to continue using the drug for several days to avoid relapse of the disease.

Contraindications and side effects

Umkalor: limitations and adverse reactions when used

Umkalor has the following contraindications:

  • Pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding period.
  • Child's age is up to one year.
  • When the body is prone to bleeding.
  • For severe damage to the kidneys and liver.
  • If you have an allergy or hypersensitivity to the components of the product.

In general, the medicine is very well tolerated, but in some cases the following side effects may occur:

  • An allergic reaction in the form of a rash (urticaria).
  • Nausea.
  • Vomit.
  • Stool disorder.
  • Pain in the stomach area.

These phenomena are quite rare and in most cases are of a blurred, unexpressed nature. Concomitant use of this drug and coumarins may enhance the anticoagulant effect and lead to bleeding.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Despite the fact that there is clinical data on the use of the drug Umkalor in pregnant women and in infants under one year of age without negative consequences for the body, the use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding is prohibited.

The drug contains alcohol and substances that work as a natural antibiotic, which easily penetrate the placental barrier and into breast milk. They can be dangerous to the health of the fetus and infant.

Correct use of the drug as prescribed by the attending physician and in compliance with all points of the instructions gives fairly quick positive results. This effective remedy based on natural plant materials works no worse than artificial drugs and has fewer contraindications and side effects than them.

Good tolerability of the drug does not guarantee the absence of adverse reactions.

Umkalor has a high safety profile, which has been confirmed by several clinical trials. However, there are some contraindications and adverse reactions.

Umkalor should not be used if:

  • hypersensitivity to the composition of the drug (in addition to pelargonium extract, it contains ethanol and glycerin);
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • renal or liver failure;
  • high risk of developing bleeding of various origins.

The instructions for use state that the simultaneous use of Umkalor and coumarin-based drugs (for example, Warfarin) can enhance the anticoagulant effect of the latter, which will lead to increased bleeding. In such cases, it is better to replace the phytoantibiotic with a similar agent that is not capable of such drug interactions.

During therapy with Umkalor, the following undesirable effects may occur:

  • allergic type reactions;
  • symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract (vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain).

No cases of drug overdose have been identified to date.

How to use Umkalor

According to the instructions, it is recommended to take Umkalor before meals (preferably half an hour before) with a small amount of water.

Children (from 12 years old) and adults are usually prescribed 20-30 drops of solution three times a day. For children 6-12 years old, a single dosage should not exceed 20 drops of Umkalor, 1-6 years old - ten drops, taken three times a day.

As a rule, the average duration of therapy does not exceed ten days. To prevent relapse after treatment with Umkalor, it is recommended to continue using the medicine for several more days after the symptoms of the disease disappear.

In cases of frequent relapses or chronic diseases, treatment is continued in reduced dosages (10-20 drops for adults without changing the frequency of administration) after consultation with a doctor.

There have been no reports of symptoms developing during overdose with Umcalor.

Umkalor's analogs

A medicine produced by a German pharmacological company has a similar effect to Umkalor. It contains extracts of 5 plants and has a mechanism of action and indications for use similar to Umkalor. Sinupret and Umkalor are not inferior to each other in effectiveness and have a similar price in pharmacy chains. The only drawback of Umkalor is that it is not available in tablet form, unlike Sinupret. Considering the three-time use of the drug, the tablet form is much more convenient for use during working hours, when it is not always possible to dilute the drug with water.

Method of congestion and dosage

Adults and children over 12 years of age: 1 tablet 3 times a day (day, lunch and evening); Children aged 6 to 12 years: 1 tablet 2 times a day (early and evening).

It is recommended to take Umkalor® without being pink, with a low acidity.

In addition, to prevent a relapse, it is recommended to continue treatment for a few more days after symptoms of illness subside. The average duration of treatment is 7-10 days.

The triviality of the celebration is not to be overestimated by 3 years.

If symptoms persist for more than 1 week without improvement and after an hour of taking medication, please consult your doctor.

Children.

Children are considered to be aged 6 years or older.

It is recommended, if it is necessary to use Umkalor together with other medications, to first consult with a specialist so as not to harm the body.

pharmachologic effect

The drug has antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, antiviral effects. The medicine is made from plant components: Pelargonium reniforme/sidoides root of South African origin.

The active substance protects tissues from the effects of infectious agents and promotes rapid recovery after microbial infection. The root extract contains flavonoids, coumarins and specific acids of organic origin, which have a pronounced bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect against gram-positive flora and gram-negative bacteria (Proteus, staphylococci, Klebsiella, streptococci, mycobacteria, etc.).

Plant components stimulate the immune system, activating the mechanisms of nonspecific and specific immunity. Due to the induction of the synthesis of interleukins, the phagocytic activity of macrophages increases and the production of interferon increases.

Gallic acid and umcalin induce the production of nitric oxide to activate macrophages, which allows the inactivation of pathogens of infectious diseases. The medication has a cytoprotective effect, which is actively used in the treatment of microbial infections. Gallic acid stimulates the synthesis and release of interferon, activates the work of immune cells, and promotes the mutual regulation of cytokines.

Quercetin has an antioxidant effect due to the stabilization of redox processes (stimulates tissue respiration, reduces the severity of hypoxia, removes metabolic products and radionuclides from the body).

The drug stabilizes the state of the intercellular substance in connective tissue, inhibits hyaluronidase, increases the strength of vascular walls, and has a pronounced mucolytic effect. Plant components reduce the viscosity of sputum and promote its removal from the lumen of the bronchial tree.

Reviews from consumers and pediatricians about the drug Umkalor

As already mentioned, reviews for Umkalor are mostly positive. Most often, it is still used in the treatment of children, who, as is known, are most susceptible to ARVI. In addition, the release form in the form of drops is considered very convenient for dosage and suitable for use by a child of any age.
In the overwhelming majority, there are no negative effects of the drug, however, there are quite a large number of reviews about the ineffectiveness of the drug and, therefore, wasted funds. Doctors' opinions regarding this drug also vary. The famous pediatrician E. O. Komarovsky considers Umkalor one of the drugs with a placebo effect and speaks about it in the following way:

From my point of view, the use of Umkalor is more psychotherapy for parents, and not real help for the child.

Umkalor is a completely safe herbal preparation that is classified as a medicine with unproven effectiveness. The drug is extremely valuable for our country. When mothers start begging the doctor for unnecessary antibiotics, wise doctors prescribe a safe “antibiotic” - Umkalor. After which everyone is fine.
