Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Bronchostop is a drug with secretolytic (mucolytic), expectorant and weak antitussive action. By depolymerizing mucopolysaccharide and mucoprotein fibers and increasing the serous component of bronchial secretions, the drug helps reduce the viscosity of sputum, and also, due to the activation of the ciliated epithelium, increases its volume and enhances expectoration.

Bromhexine potentiates the synthesis and secretion of endogenous surfactant, which ensures the stability of alveolar cells during respiration. The effect of therapy appears 2–5 days after the start of the course.

Pharmacokinetics

When taken orally for 30 minutes, 99% of the drug is absorbed in the digestive tract. Bioavailability – 80%. Penetrates the blood-brain and placental barrier.

Bromhexine undergoes oxidation in the liver, the active metabolite is ambroxol. After administration, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) is reached after 1 hour.

As a result of slow reverse diffusion from tissues, the half-life (T½) is 12 hours, the substance is excreted by the kidneys. Only a small amount of bromhexine is excreted unchanged in the urine.

The excretion of drug metabolites is impaired in the presence of chronic renal failure. May accumulate with repeated use.

Bronchostop

Bronchostop is a medicine for thinning mucus and facilitating its evacuation from the respiratory tract. It dilutes sputum, practically without increasing its volume, because this liquefaction occurs due to the destruction of disulfide bonds of acidic mucopolysaccharides. Has an expectorant effect. Improves the rheological characteristics of bronchial secretion, reducing its viscosity (helps to weaken the polarization of its constituent acidic polysaccharides and activate secretory cells lining the branches of the bronchial tree and producing neutral polysaccharides). The effect of the drug is due to the pharmacological effects of its constituent components. Thyme extract contains plant polyphenols, flavonoids and essential oils, which help eliminate bronchospasms, exhibit an antimicrobial effect, and dilute bronchial secretions. Thyme extract makes the pathological secretion of the tracheobronchial tree less viscous, stimulates its evacuation from the respiratory tract, facilitates respiratory function, and eliminates cough. Marshmallow root extract is a natural container of plant mucus that softens the inflamed mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, localizes and helps reduce the inflammatory focus, and relieves irritation. Guaifenesin (for oral drops only) reduces the tone of the smooth muscle framework of the bronchi, relieves irritation of the mucous membrane of various parts of the respiratory tract, improves the rheological properties of bronchial secretions, facilitating its excretion, and prevents a decrease in the lumen of the bronchi. Bronchostop is prescribed for infectious and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract that occur with the formation of viscous bronchial secretions that are resistant to evacuation, including a diffuse inflammatory process involving the lower airways - the trachea and bronchi, chronic inflammatory disease of the bronchi with a broncho-obstructive component, caused by prolonged irritation of the airways by pollutants and /or damage by viral-bacterial agents, bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic pneumonia.

Available in various dosage forms. Lozenges for resorption are taken 1 pc. every 3-4 hours regardless of meals. The maximum daily dose is 4 lozenges (children), 6 lozenges (adults). The lozenges are kept in the mouth until completely dissolved and are not allowed to be swallowed. If clinical improvement does not occur after seven days of taking the lozenges, you should seek medical advice to adjust your treatment. Bronchostop syrup is ready for use: no dissolution is required. Single dose: 5 ml (for patients under 4 years of age), 7.5 ml (for patients under 12 years of age), 15 ml (for patients over 12 years of age). Frequency of application – every 3-4 hours, but no more than 6 times a day. Oral drops are used 10 drops in children under 12 years of age, 20 drops in patients over 12 years of age. Frequency of application – every 4-6 hours, but no more than 5 times a day. The maximum duration of the drug course for this dosage form is 5 days. The drug has a favorable safety profile and is well tolerated by patients. In rare cases, a painful sensation may occur in the epigastric region, chest, oral cavity and pharynx, preceding vomiting, allergic reactions (urticaria, Quincke's edema), when taking oral drops - discomfort and pain in the epigastrium, retrograde movement of stomach contents through the lower esophageal sphincter into the esophagus, irritation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. The drug is not prescribed to persons with individual intolerance to one or more active and/or auxiliary components. Drops are not used in persons suffering from severe gastrointestinal diseases. It is not recommended to use the drug in patients with individual fructose intolerance.

Indications for use

  • pulmonary diseases in acute/chronic form, occurring with the production of high-viscosity sputum: pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, bronchial asthma, cystic fibrosis, tracheobronchitis, bronchitis of various etiologies (including those complicated by bronchiectasis);
  • sanitation of the bronchial tree in the period before operations or therapeutic/diagnostic intrabronchial manipulations;
  • accumulation of thick viscous sputum in the bronchi in the postoperative period (for prevention purposes).

Pharmacological authorities

Pharmacodynamics.

“BRONCHOSTOP® PASTILLES” is used as a decongestant for coughs associated with colds, which is important during long-term therapy. Essential oils and flavonoids of the herb thyme (thyme) have a bronchodilator, secretolytic and antibacterial effect, thus soothing the thin mucus that has accumulated in sick people, changing the cough, relieving the cough, and also lead to infection.

The natural base (gum) contains a high-volume active substance, which reduces the flow of secretion from the mucous membranes, which is why the subdivision of the mucous membranes changes, the mucous membrane is activated, and thus the mucus. The membrane becomes swollen, thereby further relieving the cough and making the cough less severe. Shvidko and for a long time protects the receptors of the mucous membrane of dichotomous substances.

Pharmacokinetics.

The flavonoids of the thyme herb (apigenin, luteolin) are broken down by the intestinal microflora and are well absorbed. It is important to be removed from the body in terms of unchanged appearance or the appearance of metabolites.

Contraindications

  • I trimester of pregnancy;
  • breastfeeding period;
  • hereditary fructose intolerance (since sorbitol is included in the syrup);
  • stomach ulcer;
  • peptic ulcer of the stomach;
  • hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

The drug should be used with caution in the following conditions/diseases:

  • II–III trimesters of pregnancy;
  • liver and/or kidney failure;
  • history of gastric bleeding;
  • diseases of the bronchi, accompanied by excessive accumulation of secretions.

Forms, consumption, price

The manufacturer offers the already mentioned syrups, as well as tablets and a spray solution for adults. There are links to websites for the drops, which are indicated as a convenient form for treating young children due to the possibility of more precise dosing.

Bronchostop syrup

The drug is suitable for short-term use for five days as part of complex therapy for colds and flu. Long-term consumption is possible for medical purposes. Price from 129.25 UAH. up to 224.02 UAH.

Bronchostop spray

This product is more of a remedy for the relief of symptoms associated with inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. Neutralizes irritation, masks the inflammatory process due to its antimicrobial effect, relieves swallowing and breathing. Contains thyme and sage extracts

When using, be careful not to get the product in your eyes or nose. The application is not difficult: 1-2 drops in the mouth or deep in the throat, two to four times a day

Not for children and teenagers under 18 years of age. Overdose may cause changes in heart rate, warmth, dizziness and seizures.

Side effects

Rarely, during long-term use of the drug, the following undesirable effects may occur: allergic reactions (including skin rash, rhinitis, facial swelling, etc.), exacerbation of gastric and duodenal ulcers, dyspepsia (including nausea and vomiting), headache, dizziness, increased activity of liver transaminases in the blood serum.

If the above or other violations occur, you must stop taking the drug and consult a specialist for advice.

Contraindications, side effects, interactions, overdose

Bronchostop is not recommended for infants and young children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, alcohol-dependent forms - syrup.
It should not be used if you are allergic to herbal extracts or any of the excipients. Not suitable for people with gastrointestinal diseases; patients with severe hepatic abnormalities, epilepsy is at risk. Possible side effects, like other medications, vary in frequency. The patient leaflet groups them as follows:

  • Digestive system: stomach pain is possible, in rare cases - nausea and vomiting;
  • Central nervous system: dizziness, fatigue, delayed reactions, distraction;
  • Immune system: hypersensitivity to bronchospasm, difficulty breathing, bradycardia; itching and rash. There may also be abnormalities in the blood test.

Although rare, bronchoconstriction can precipitate anaphylactic shock and angioedema; as this is caused by a reaction to the thyme extract.

For each form of Bronchostop, parallel consumption with other cough products is prohibited. Most restrictions are prescribed for drops, which are not popular in our country. However, it is good to know that they should not be combined with medications that suppress the nervous system. Concomitant consumption with sedatives and muscle relaxants increases their effects.

This rule applies - any combination of bronchoconstriction with other drugs should be discussed with the patient.

Any overdose can cause interference with the functioning of the digestive and cardiovascular systems. Stomatitis, nausea and vomiting, heart rhythm disturbances, dizziness and convulsions, diarrhea, and alcohol intoxication have been reported. In case of unintentional overdose or any of the symptoms described, the patient should seek emergency medical attention.

special instructions

Weakened patients should use the drug with caution.

In order to maintain the secretolytic effect of Bronchostop and enhance its expectorant effect, it is recommended to consume a sufficient amount of fluid during the course of therapy.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms

There is no data on the negative impact of Bronchostop on the ability to drive vehicles and other complex mechanisms.

Syrup dosages

This form uses the drug "Bronchostop" for children. The instructions allow the use of the medicine for babies over 1 year old, but only as prescribed by a doctor.

The drug “Bronchostop” (syrup) is intended exclusively for internal use. The instructions recommend using the medicine undiluted. However, if necessary, the liquid can be dissolved in one glass of drinking water or warm tea. The duration of treatment with Bronchostop and its dosage are determined by the doctor.

Bronchostop

As a rule, they are as follows:

  1. Babies 1-4 years old need to take 5 ml of medication every 3-4 hours.
  2. Children 4-12 years old. For such children, the dose increases to 7.5 ml. The frequency of administration is the same - every 3-4 hours.
  3. Teenagers, adults. This category of patients is prescribed 15 ml every 3-4 hours.

However, you should know that the number of doses of Bronchostop should not exceed 6 times per day. Often the duration of therapy is 1 week. If positive dynamics do not appear during this period, you should definitely consult a doctor to adjust the treatment regimen.

Drug interactions

  • medications that suppress the cough center (including codeine) - the evacuation of liquefied sputum is difficult, secretions from the bronchi accumulate in the respiratory tract (this combination is contraindicated);
  • some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (butadione, phenylbutazone, salicylates) - irritation of the gastric mucosa may occur;
  • sulfonamide drugs, antibiotics (cephalexin, amoxicillin, oxytetracycline, erythromycin) - the penetration of these drugs into bronchial secretions improves during the first 4-5 days of antimicrobial therapy.

Bronchostop is incompatible with alkaline solutions.

Reviews

This drug is used for dry cough with a small amount of sputum that is difficult to separate. Reviews about the drug are varied, which probably depends on the severity of the cough and the individual sensitivity of the body. The effectiveness of the drug increases if treatment is started at the first manifestations of a “cold”: sore throat and coughing.

This is a herbal preparation and you should not expect a quick effect for severe cough. Some users report this - the effect occurs after 5 or more days. Further, many note that the drug is effective only as part of a complex treatment. The lozenges taste good and are convenient to use in any conditions. They relieve inflammation, sore throat, and irritation of the mucous membrane that provokes coughing.

  • “... The dry cough quickly calmed down, after 2 days the sputum began to disappear”;
  • “... After 4 days the hard cough became softer and the sputum began to come out”;
  • “... I am very pleased with the drug: it becomes easier to breathe and pain in the trachea and bronchi goes away”;
  • “...On the fifth day of taking it, an allergic reaction appeared”;
  • “...Bronchostop as a monotherapy is ineffective.”

Among the disadvantages of the drug, it is also noted that a bottle of syrup is enough for 3.5 days, and a package of lozenges is enough for 2.5 days.
