Regulon, 30 mcg+150 mcg, film-coated tablets, 21 pcs.

Compound

Regulon contains 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 150 mcg desogestrel , as well as auxiliary components: magnesium stearate, alpha-tocopheryl acetate, silicon dioxide colloidal, stearic acid, povidone (Povidone), potato starch (Solani amylum), lactose monohydrate (Lactose monohydrate).
The film shell is made using macrogol 6000 (Macrogol 6000), propylene glycol (Propylene glycol), hypromellose (Hypromellose).

Release form of the drug

The drug is available only in tablet form. According to reviews, this medication is one of the most popular means of contraception. Regulon tablets contain a combination of synthetic analogues of hormones that prevent the fertilization of the egg even if the woman is sexually active without using barrier means of protection against unwanted pregnancy (condoms). These hormones are tinyl estradiol and desogestrel. They suppress the synthesis of female hormones that perform follicle-stimulating and luteinizing functions.

Each tablet is covered with a protective film shell of a white or grayish tint. Regulon pills have a convex on both sides, on one of which the marking P8 is stamped, and on the other - RG. Each pack of Regulon contains 21 tablets placed in a blister. One pill contains:

  • 0.15 mg desogestrel;
  • 0.03 mg tinyl estradiol.

In addition to the main active ingredients, there are also auxiliary components, including magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, stearic acid, potato starch and povidone.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

According to the abstract, the mechanism of action of the drug is based on the ability of its active substances to suppress the synthesis of gonadotropins by the pituitary gland (in particular, luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones ).

This makes ovulation , increases the density of cervical mucus and, as a result, prevents the penetration of sperm into the internal space of the uterine body .

Ethinyl estradiol is a synthetic analogue of estradiol , which begins to be produced in a woman’s body, starting with the first menstruation.

Desogestrel has a pronounced progestogenic and antiestrogenic effect , similar to that of endogenous progesterone . The substance is characterized by weak anabolic and androgenic activity .

During the period of taking Regulon tablets, a woman (in the case of initial menorrhagia ) significantly reduces blood loss during menstruation and improves the condition of the skin (especially in the presence of acne vulgaris ).

Both desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol are quickly and almost completely absorbed from the digestive tract. Desogestrel immediately metabolized to form a biologically active metabolite - 3-keto-desogestrel .

Plasma concentration reaches its maximum:

  • after 1.5 hours - for desogestrel (plasma concentration indicator - 2 ng in 1 ml);
  • after 1-2 hours - for ethinyl estradiol (plasma concentration indicator - 80 pg in 1 ml).

Bioavailability indicator:

  • for desogestrel - from 62 to 81%;
  • for ethinyl estradiol - about 60% (this is due to presystemic conjugation and the effect of the first passage of the substance through the hepatic barrier).

Half-life:

  • for 3-keto-desogestrel - 30 hours ( metabolic products are excreted in the urine and intestinal contents in a ratio of 4:6);
  • for ethinyl estradiol - 24% (approximately 40% of the substance and its metabolites are excreted in the urine, the remaining approximately 60% in the intestinal contents).

How does this product work?

With regular use of Regulon tablets, artificial hormones suppress ovulation. In addition, they contribute to changes in the consistency and chemical composition of cervical mucus, which makes it difficult for sperm to further penetrate the uterus through the cervix. Even if conception occurs, the fertilized egg will not be able to implant into the wall of the organ.

In fact, the tinyl estradiol and desogestrel contained in the drug are artificial analogues of estrogen and gestagen. That is why the contraceptive has an estrogenic-progestogenic effect on the female body. The intake of these substances into the body over a long period of time helps to suppress the production of gonadotropin and prevent the onset of the ovulation cycle, without which fertilization is impossible.

In addition to contraception, several other uses of Regulon tablets are known. What do they help with? It turns out that steroid contraceptives can be used for therapeutic purposes. Thus, “Regulon” is often prescribed to women for the treatment of diseases arising from hormonal imbalance and the elimination of benign neoplasms. Regulon hormonal tablets can be used to stabilize the menstrual cycle and prevent vaginal bleeding. The product also has a beneficial effect on fat metabolism in a woman’s body, increasing the level of high-density lipoproteins.

Are there any side effects? Patient reviews

Despite the popularity of Regulon, it cannot be called a completely harmless drug. In the vast majority of cases, the drug is tolerated normally, but based on user comments, sometimes these birth control pills cause unpleasant symptoms such as increased blood pressure and partial hearing loss. With long-term use of this drug, some women developed thrombosis.

More common adverse reactions include headache, psycho-emotional imbalance, and skin rash. Often, patients who wear contact lenses experience tearing and eye irritation.

Many women are afraid to take hormonal contraceptives because of the side effects that may arise from the use of steroid drugs - weight gain, growth of body hair, mood swings, etc. However, such fears are unfounded. If there is a risk of weight gain, it is associated to a greater extent with the probable stagnation of fluid in the body, which Regulon can cause.

Sometimes birth control pills cause gastrointestinal problems. Disturbances in the functioning of the genitourinary system, the development of an inflammatory process, an increase in the size of the mammary glands, the development of mastodynia, and thrush are also possible. In case of individual intolerance, the drug is immediately discontinued. It is worth noting that the use of hormonal contraceptives does not affect a woman’s ability to drive a car.

Regulon tablet composition

Regulon birth control pills: instructions for use

How to take Regulon correctly?

Start taking pills from day 1 of the menstrual cycle , one per day, at the same time of day, for 3 weeks (21 days). After the last tablet is taken, it is necessary to maintain a seven-day interval, during which bleeding similar to menstrual bleeding should occur.

On the 8th day after the last tablet was taken (4 weeks after starting the drug, on the same day of the week), even if the bleeding has not stopped, taking the tablets is resumed from the next blister.

How long can you take Regulon?

According to the scheme described above, the tablets are taken as long as the need for contraception continues. If a woman takes the pills, following all the rules and recommendations specified in the instructions for Regulon, the contraceptive effect also remains during the seven-day interval.

First pill intake

The first tablet of the drug is taken on day 1 of the cycle. In this case, there is no need to use additional methods of contraception. If you start taking it between 2 and 5 days of the cycle, then during the first 7 days of the first cycle of using Regulon you should resort to using barrier contraceptives .

If more than 5 days have passed of menstrual bleeding

How to drink Regulon after childbirth?

If a woman is not breastfeeding, she can start taking pills 21 days after birth (after prior consultation with her gynecologist). In such a situation, there is no need to use additional contraception.

If sexual intercourse took place after childbirth, it is recommended to postpone the start of taking Regulon until the next cycle.

If the drug is started later than 3 weeks after birth, additional methods of contraception should be used in the first 7 days of the first cycle of use.

Taking pills after an abortion

If there are no contraindications, the pills can be taken from 1 day after the abortion , without supplementing them with other contraceptives.

Regulon is also often prescribed after curettage.

The advisability of prescribing pills after an abortion/curettage (in particular, after a missed abortion ) is due to the need to restore normal ovarian function and prevent the development of inflammatory complications, which, according to statistics, are observed in approximately every third woman who has had a repeat abortion.

The optimal means are considered to be drugs that contain a highly active gestagenic substance that does not have side effects, and, in particular, Regulon tablets produced by the Gedeon Richter company.

Taking the drug allows you to compensate for the progesterone of proliferative processes associated with it (including tectonic hyperplasia , polycystic ovary syndrome , adenomyosis , fibromyoma , endometrial hyperplasia , endometriosis , hyperthecosis , mastopathy , etc.).

Switching to Regulon from other hormonal drugs

When switching to the drug from another contraceptive, the first tablet should be taken the next day after completing the 28-day package (21 days of use + 7 days of break). There is no need to use additional contraception.

When switching to Regulon from a mini-pill , the first tablet is taken on day 1 of the cycle, without supplementing the intake with other methods of contraception.

If no menstrual bleeding occurs during the period of taking the mini-pill, you can start taking Regulon on any day of the cycle, but only after pregnancy has been ruled out.

In the first 7 days of the first cycle of administration, there is a need for additional protective measures, for which they usually use a condom, a cap with spermicidal gel, or abstain from sexual intercourse. The calendar method of contraception in this case is ineffective.

Delay of menstruation

When it is necessary to delay menstruation , continue to take the pills without taking a break of 7 days. When menstrual bleeding , breakthrough bleeding or spotting may occur, which, however, does not reduce the contraceptive effect of the drug.

Regular intake of tablets is restored after a 7-day interval.

How to take Regulon if you miss a pill?

If no more than 12 hours have passed since missing a pill, the forgotten pill is taken immediately after being remembered. Further reception continues according to the usual scheme.

If the interval between doses is more than 12 hours, the reliability of the drug in a given cycle cannot be considered one hundred percent. Therefore, you should use additional contraception until your next cycle.

If you miss 1 tablet in the first 7-14 days of the cycle, you should take 2 tablets at once the next day, after which the reception is continued according to the usual regimen using additional contraceptives until the end of the cycle.

If a tablet was missed between 14 and 21 days, regular use is continued by taking the forgotten tablet and without taking a 7-day break.

of ovulation and/or bloody vaginal discharge increases . This is due to the fact that the drug contains a minimal dose of estrogen , and requires the use of additional contraceptives.

How to take it correctly, dosage

How to take Regulon tablets is clearly stated in the instructions. The drug is taken from the first day of menstruation. Doctors prescribe one tablet once a day for 21 days. That is why one package contains 21 tablets - this number of pills is enough for one 28-day menstrual course, since after using the blister you need to take a week's break. As a rule, during this period women experience bleeding. It may last as long as your period, or a little longer.

After a week, you must start taking birth control pills from the next pack. Usually, every attending physician tells his patients how to take Regulon tablets if, after a week's break, bleeding is still observed. But if for some reason no attention was paid to this issue at the gynecologist’s appointment, you need to act as follows: start taking the pills, regardless of your period.

how to take regulon tablets

This regimen for taking Regulon should be followed as long as there is a need for oral contraception. If you follow the rules of administration, the effect of birth control pills is permanent.

It is important to start taking the drug from the first day of your period. In this case, protection against unwanted pregnancy will be reliable; the use of additional methods of protection will not be required.

“What to do if you missed a Regulon pill at the beginning of your cycle?”

All women ask their doctor this question. You can start taking the drug from the second or third day, but then using pills alone is not enough; for reliable protection you will have to use additional methods of contraception throughout the entire cycle. But what if more than five days have passed since the first day of menstruation and the woman missed the Regulon pill, what to do? If such a situation occurs, then it makes no sense to start taking the drug in this menstrual cycle. It is better to postpone the start of use until the next menstruation.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose of Regulon are:

  • dyspepsia;
  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • severe headache ;
  • cramps of the calf muscles;
  • Vaginal bleeding not associated with menstruation.

Since the drug does not have a specific antidote, symptomatic therapy is used to relieve overdose symptoms. First aid after taking a high dose of Regulon is gastric lavage (it is recommended to do this in the first two to three hours after taking the pills).

Interaction

The effectiveness of oral contraceptives is reduced in combination with drugs that induce liver enzymes: rifampicin , hydantoin, carbamazepine , barbiturates , oxcarbazepine , felbamate , primidone , topiramate , St. John's wort , griseovulfine .

In addition, when used in combination with Regulon, these drugs increase the likelihood of breakthrough bleeding.

The level of induction reaches its maximum no earlier than 2-3 weeks later, but can persist up to 4 weeks after discontinuation of the drug.

Menstrual irregularities and decreased contraceptive effect may occur when used simultaneously with:

  • antibiotics (especially with Tetracycline and Ampicillin);
  • barbiturates;
  • some antispasmodics ;
  • laxatives;
  • antidepressants.

In cases where taking the above medications is necessary, it is recommended to protect yourself using barrier contraceptives (during the entire treatment period, as well as for an additional 7-28 days, depending on which medicine was prescribed).

If it is necessary to use anticoagulants while taking Regulon, additional monitoring of prothrombin time . In some situations, adjustment of the anticoagulant .

Due to the increased likelihood of complications, Regulon should not be combined with hepatotoxic drugs .

While taking oral contraceptives, you may:

  • decreased tolerance to carbohydrates;
  • increased need for oral antidiabetic drugs and insulin .

How to combine with other medications?

Some medications that stimulate the production of liver enzymes may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control pills. Such drugs include:

  • "Hydantoin."
  • "Carbamazepine".
  • "Primidon".
  • "Rifampicin."
  • "Felbamate."
  • "Topiramate."
  • "Griseofulvin".

Among the herbal components, it is worth noting St. John's wort, which minimizes the effect of oral contraceptives and increases the risk of intermenstrual bleeding. Antibiotics based on ampicillin and tetracycline act in a similar way. And although the exact mechanism of their mutual influence on each other has not been established, experts are convinced that these agents reduce the effectiveness of Regulon. If it is necessary to take drugs in combination, gynecologists recommend using barrier methods of contraception until discontinuation of the drug, which reduces the effectiveness of birth control pills.

special instructions

If taking Regulon is accompanied by a deterioration in liver test results, it is recommended to immediately stop taking the pills.

acyclic intermenstrual bleeding may occur , which is not a reason to discontinue the pills. However, if they continue for three months or more, it is necessary to undergo a detailed examination.

Since taking Regulon in women who smoke is accompanied by an increased risk of thromboembolic complications , they are recommended to decide on quitting smoking.

If menstruation after Regulon does not occur in the second cycle, the possibility of pregnancy should be excluded.

The teratogenic effect of Regulon has not been proven. For this reason, if pregnancy occurs while taking the pills, there is no need to interrupt it.

How long can you take Regulon?

During the period of taking Regulon tablets, changes occur in a woman’s body that are characteristic of the first weeks of pregnancy . A woman who already has children experiences the same processes in her reproductive system that would occur if she gave birth and nursed several children.

It is well known that having a large number of children is the most effective method of protecting against cancer of the reproductive system and mammary glands .

Thus, long-term use of Regulon enhances the therapeutic effect of the drug. Taking pills is allowed until the woman is faced with the question of planning a child.

Regulon and menstruation

As a rule, menstrual bleeding becomes more scanty when taking Regulon. However, it also happens that a woman may develop an addiction to the drug, which most often manifests itself in the form of spotting.

Stopping taking the pills is usually accompanied by increased ovarian . Therefore, one of the consequences of discontinuing Regulon may be very heavy menstrual bleeding .

If there are no periods after discontinuation, this may also be due to failure of ovarian function . As a rule, it and, consequently, the menstrual cycle are restored a month after stopping Regulon. To determine the level of hormones in the body, gynecologists recommend taking the necessary tests a month after stopping the drug.

Regulon and weight: do hormonal pills make you fat?

It is generally accepted that taking hormonal contraceptives can provoke weight gain. However, doctors claim that if you follow all the rules for taking Regulon, as well as your daily routine and nutrition, the pills do not have any effect on a woman’s weight.

Typically, weight gain while taking birth control pills may be due to the fact that the desogestrel is characterized by the ability to retain fluid in the body (for example, progesterone is the cause of edema during pregnancy).

The sex hormones contained in Regulon help accelerate the biochemical reactions of lipids and carbohydrates . If the level of physical activity is assessed as sufficient, excess calories are easily converted into energy, but if there is insufficient exercise, they settle on the body in the form of extra pounds.

Is it possible to get pregnant while taking the drug?

When taking Regulon correctly, the likelihood of pregnancy is negligible. The effectiveness of the drug is very close to 100%.

The risk of becoming pregnant is highest during the period of changing the contraceptive, in cases where there were missed pills, violations of the dosing schedule (the pills were taken at different times each time) and also if the effect of the pill was neutralized (for example, by an absorbent).

In what cases is Regulon prescribed?

Instructions for use indicate the rationality of using a drug with estrogen-progestogen action to prevent unwanted pregnancy. In gynecological practice, Regulon is also used to correct hormonal levels, the menstrual cycle and the treatment of diseases such as:

  1. uterine fibroids;
  2. dysmenorrhea;
  3. endometriosis;
  4. adenomyosis;
  5. cysts in the ovaries and mammary glands.

Regulon is also indicated for functional uterine bleeding and progesterone deficiency after artificial termination of pregnancy.

Regulon allows you to reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome, pain in the mammary glands, lower abdomen and lumbar region, reduce the volume of menstrual flow, and cleanse the skin of acne.

Regulon provides almost 100% contraceptive effect if used correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Skipping a contraceptive requires immediate administration of an additional dose of the drug or the use of local contraceptives. The effect of a combined monophasic drug depends on the route of administration and the reason for which it was prescribed.

The adaptation period when using Regulon lasts on average about 3 months. At this time, a change in hormonal levels is observed, which can manifest itself in the form of intermenstrual bleeding. They are not a reason to discontinue the drug. After this period, the hormonal background is harmonized, and further use of synthetic hormones does not cause concern. However, in case of prolonged abnormal vaginal discharge, consultation with a gynecologist is mandatory.

The absence of menstruation after completing a course of taking pills is also a cause of concern. Your period may come later. Amenorrhea may indicate pregnancy if there have been cases of violation of the drug regimen.

Regulon or Janine - which is better?

Both Regulon and Janine are low-dose monophasic contraceptives . They have a similar mechanism of action, but differ in composition. Regulon is a combination of ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel , and in Janine, ethinyl estradiol is supplemented with dienogest (the dose of the progestogen component in Janine dragees is slightly higher than in Regulon).

The most significant difference between the drugs is their price - Regulon is much cheaper than its analogue.

Regulon and pregnancy

Pregnancy is an absolute contraindication to the use of Regulon. During lactation, you should stop taking the drug or stop breastfeeding.

This is due to the fact that taking pills in the postpartum period provokes a decrease in the amount of milk, impairs lactation and negatively affects the growth of the child.

Pregnancy after Regulon birth control pills

Typically, pregnancy after Regulon occurs after about 6 months of active sexual activity.

For a woman who is planning a child, doctors recommend stopping taking the drug at least three months before conception.

Reviews for Regulon

birth control pills - reviews are proof of this - this is one of the most popular means of contraception.

Most women taking them note the low number of side effects of the drug, its reliability, affordable price, and also the fact that pregnancy occurs without any problems after stopping the pills (on the forums, those who became pregnant after Regulon leave a considerable number of positive reviews about this drug).

However, there are also negative reviews about the side effects of Regulon. As a rule, they are associated with the appearance of acyclic bleeding of varying degrees of intensity , itching in intimate areas , nausea , and excess weight gain .

Turning to doctors' reviews of Regulon, we can come to the conclusion that such phenomena are most often caused by intolerance to any component of the tablets or by the fact that the drug is simply not suitable for a particular organism. To minimize side effects, it is recommended to strictly follow the instructions for use of the tablets.

If in this case there is no improvement, it is worth deciding on discontinuing the drug, undergoing the necessary examinations and choosing another means of contraception.

Use with caution

In addition to absolute ones, relative contraindications should also be taken into account. It is necessary to use the drug with caution if there is a high risk of developing arterial thrombosis or hypertension. Relative contraindications also include autoimmune diseases (lupus erythematosus). A woman over 35 years old must undergo laboratory blood tests before taking Regulon tablets. If several biochemical parameters change, it is not advisable to take birth control pills. For example, if you have a protein C deficiency or the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies, including anticardiolipin antibodies, taking the lupus anticoagulant may be dangerous.

In addition, it is not recommended to take Regulon for migraines, obesity, or heart pathologies. Intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease are a serious limitation for the use of hormonal contraceptives.
